I paid more attention to political noise from 2008-2020 than at any other time in my life. While I seek out what I consider unbiased sources of news, it's nearly impossible to find these days, as we've discussed here so many times. I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal. When I (infrequently) read CNN or Fox News, I always go to the other website to read the slant there and see what the headlines are about. I try to stay neutral or stay in the middle. I'm a socially left-leaning, fiscally right-leaning independent, but I've voted R-R-R-R-R-L-D in my adult presidential elections thus far. I've lost some elections; I've won one or two, and I basically opted out of one.

I've been reading a lot of political history from the 1800s recently, and have come to realize that this country is no more divided than it was then. Politicians in the mid-1800s literally caned each other, others challenged to duels, the debates were as heated then as they are now.

What's the difference? We hear about every stupid conversation AOC or Marjorie Taylor Greene have or every word they utter in near real time. We are outraged at what celebrities who have not a ****ing thing to do with making policy think about policy. We argue about what Tucker Carlson thinks.

Who give a ****? Turn the shit off. It's a waste of time.

I've pared back my participation here of late, and I'm happier that I did. There seem to be a lot of miserable people here who live to bitch about the next thing Trump or Biden or whomever did. While I was an active participant in some of the Trump hate, and I'm sure that Biden is doing things I don't politically agree with... the fact of the matter is the things those men do on a day to day basis barely affect me at all, and there isn't shit I can do about it for four more years anyway.

So, go play with your kids. Get out in the sunshine. Quit wasting your time on political porn. I think you'll be happier that you did, regardless of your affiliation. This shit saps energy and creates outrage. Nobody needs more of that in their lives.

Good god man, read about politics then!!
Hey, what do you think about that Navy CB who didn't get his deferment packet forwarded.

I've read a lot of different takes on it. David Robinson did his two. Then some AF recievers got a waiver. It seems arbitrary and at the whim of the DOD.

Happens infrequently… Navy balances the recruiting benefit from a guy like Robinson vs letting every two bit athlete back out on their commitment. Personally, unless the guy is a shoo-in star first rounder, they should be made to serve. They know the deal they signed up for.

Voted for Biden, and then turns around and says he's done with politics. Trump truly broke some people. Where is your common sense man?

The reason you vote for Trump is to get the ****ing government OUT of our lives so we don't have to argue about it forever.

This doofus votes to inject racial marxists into the political bloodstream and then lectures us about caring about what they do.

Exhibit A.

GOVERNMENT will be in your life when you live in a governed society. Thinking otherwise is juvenile.

POLITICS in your life is by your choice. It has nothing to do with Trump. I argued about how bad Obama sucked too, and it didn’t make a difference nor did it make me happier.

When you can’t discern between government and politics, you are addicted to the outrage. It makes you feel something. My advice would be to go find a better feeling via another medium that actually matters.

I find it interesting that for 4 yrs, it was fine to spray venom due to politics, but today we should stop.

And yet, our President calls our country racist and that narrative needs to be re-enforced perpetually. Here’s a leader that could reduce venom from both sides, but he keeps stoking the fire. And the liberals love that he does it, much like the “deplorables” did the same with Trump.

The senate sits at a 50/50 split, but Biden is making sure the Republicans accept his framework. Not much “bipartisan” shown by Biden, so why should republicans tone down their venom?

I know right...they thought if they declared total war on us for 4 years, and could just get rid of the bogyman Trump, everything would be peachy keen. Trump is a symptom, and guess what? The disease is getting worse. Things are just getting started.

Government control and politics go together like bricks and mortar. If you want limited politics, you need limited government. Instead we have the Left that has turned politics into a secular religion. That can only lead to conflict.

Getting the government out of every aspect of life and culture is the way to make politics civil again.

I guess one could say the same about the Purdue Rivals KHC......perhaps Purdue sports are more enjoyable if one of stays off there....no doubt true after a loss. But perhaps true always?

I definitely don't participate there to the same extent, either. Back in the day when I was single and had nothing but time on my hands, the arguments were entertaining. Now they're just draining and pointless. Ain't nobody got time for that. It all accomplishes nothing but to sour your mood.

Thing is, you can consume Purdue sports without becoming outraged. It's just entertainment. While Fox News/CNN/et. al. are also just vying for entertainment eyeballs, people have a very tough time seperating the content from emotion. Those places and those evening shows feed on that outrage. They don't care about your well-being. They just want you to make an emotional attachment to what they're saying and tune in again tomorrow.

Unfortunately, my in-laws and other people I know are susceptible to it, and its made them markedly less enjoyable to be around. In the case of my in-laws, they've become basically hermits because they can't turn the stuff off.

We have to live with government (taxes, laws, etc.) as a fact of life - government will never go away, though less of it is good (IMO). Elimination of government is not the goal of either party, regardless of the name of the politician you elect. The idea that Trump (or any elected official) was going to "get government out of our lives" is patently absurd.

But we choose whether or not we pay attention to politics.

If you haven't noticed my posting has dropped off a bit like Gr8,. It's hard sometimes not to respond but I realize it's not worth the trouble.
Most times when I get tagged here, I just see who it is doing the tagging/responding and more often than not, I roll my eyes and move on.

I'm not saying to stop spraying venom and be nice about politics. I'm staying stop paying attention to it altogether. The difference between now and 50 years ago is just that CNN/Fox/Breitbart/Vox/etc. all exist for the sole purpose of fomenting and profiting off of your political outrage. 50 years ago, politicians said stupid shit daily, but you didn't read about it in near real-time like you do now whenever AOC or MTG or Tommy Tuberville or Bernie Sanders open their mouths.

The peak of my participation on this message board was decrying Obama and ACA, along with the Mike Brown shooting where I was defending the Grand Jury opting not to indict the officer there. That was every bit as pointless and not productive as anything I wrote about Trump.

Again, nothing to do with Trump for me personally, but if you choose to see everything as either for or against Trump, you're falling into exactly what I'm talking about: you're addicted to your outrage, and the cycle will never stop for you until you choose to make it stop.

I don’t see it as for or against Trump, I see it as for or against my standard of living and/or my quality of life (by changing the history I believe in...I draw the line at confederate statues...and exclude Lincoln statues for removal).

CRT not against Trump, against what I was taught in school and i see this as adding more racism into society, but I’m sure several will challenge that premise.
monuments...tied to cancel culture.
Raising taxes...same
Border control...same topic that got Trump elect, so an issue before Trump.
BLM- predates Trump
Defund the Police...non-Trump
Free college....non-Trump
Reparations...non-Trump
Filibuster...predates Trump

About the only things that is directly tied to Trump is withdrawal from Paris accord (I’m fine with rejoining)...WHO (I question their intentions, but I don’t lose sleep)...AND Supreme Court Nominees/justices (one sort of predates Trump, but he nominated all three). Oh and SALT taxes.

So I don’t see much of these Topics as Trump versus non-Trump, but for the people who made the election about him...I get it. But the exact reason as to why Trump, is the exact reason for this debate. For 4 yrs, MSNBC, CNN and MSM went into “all out attack mode”, and it worked. I see the Republicans today as merely deciding to use the same tactics. I try to bring the debate here to hear pros and cons, but obviously side mainly with conservatives, but I am not a blind Trumper (see comments on Paris Accord).

And I doubt “this stops...if I stop”.

This is a completely bananas statement. The burden of politics is directly proportional to the size of government. The larger the government, the more powerful, the greater the stakes that go with the elections to control it. An all powerful government which regulates every aspect of society must result in a conflict over control of that entity.

In a system where people are left to solve their own problems, and government has few powers, politics is an afterthought. In our system where the federal government wants total control of our lives, politics has become a religion and has brought us to the brink if war.

It's off limits with my family and friends that have opposing views. Wasn't the case for most of my life but much too toxic and divisive now.
I can imagine your family members and friends asked you not to talk about politics with them during the Trump administration up until now. You still show lingering effects from TDS. I bet the family and friends got damn tired of your non-stop ranting.

Amazing how quiet Bob has become now that he is faced with the results of the incompetent POS he voted for

Like most here, they have come to the realization that trump is an idiot but would rather not talk about it........just his policies which they mostly agree with .......again like most here.

Go read some history if you think now is so vastly different. It isn’t. You’re just acutely aware of it because you spend your entire day surfing Brietbart or wherever. Back in time, politics was not an all-consuming 24hr media phenomenon as it is today.

Just stop consuming it.

The vast majority of the stuff you listed has literally zero effect on your quality of life. Much like the media now throws “Delta variant soon to be dominant in the US” in a big headline even though 70% of the country has at least one shot shows you it’s about selling sensations.

The way you get from your list to effecting your quality of life is through one giant slippery slope fallacy. How does BLM affect your ability to give your kids a fun day or change the way your burger tastes coming off the grill?

Maybe a BLM protest makes you late for work one day… BFD?

gr8,

I must say that since I’ve stopped watching almost all TV/Cable news shows, my happiness level has gone up quite a bit. I disagree with just about every policy that the Biden administration has implemented or put forward but am pleased we currently have the divided government we have. The extreme positions of the Progressives are getting defeated or scrapped because they don’t have the votes in the Senate. Joe Manchin and Sinema have been bringing some sanity to the discussions. The USSC seems to be making decisions I generally agree with and reversing previous bad decisions.

Thanks. This is my point, nothing more than that. I’ve noticed that the days I spend any time immersed in politics (here or on WSJ or wherever) I am in a crappier mood, and it really doesn’t matter what the subject is or who is “winning”.

It’s just not worth the time or energy. I’m just encouraging people to devote that time and energy elsewhere, and I think most of us would be happier people for it.

You can be informed without becoming outraged. It’s all in our own control.

I think you should have a 12 yr old kid in school and have a sit down conversation about CRT. Beyond that,

monuments...try explaining to your kid why Abe Lincoln statues are being removed.
Raising taxes...no impact on quality of life?
Defund the Police ...no impact on quality of life?
Increased crime due to minimal desire to prosecute?

Your right, there were topics that probably do not have a substantial impact on my quality of life, but I believe the list above does.

My kid wears a hat with an American flag on it, has been since last fall, and the majority of
Kids in his school go “Ewwww, we should probably burn your hat.”

All three you just listed are - again - slippery slopes. My kids have no awareness of Abraham Lincoln statues at 5 and 2. i personally don’t care about statues in the least. Laughable that you bring that up as an impact on your day to day QOL.

Taxes? If you’re talking about Biden’s plan, you should be so lucky as to be affected by it. I will be. Will it have a marked impact on my QOL? Absolutely not.

Defund? Slippery slope fallacy.

Ive read plenty of history, no doubt more than you.

If you study history then you know that civil conflicts are by and large caused by government over reach, or perceived government overreach. Both the American Revolution and the Civil War were caused by perceived government oppression. Both conflicts involved one party fighting for less government intrusion in their lives.

Most everybody will be impacted if Biden tax & spend proposals get passed. Some will show a hit on their tax returns (income tax, inheritance tax changes). Others will take a hit elsewhere.

Some could end up better off as well.

The media has just nodded along as Biden sells his tax proposal as "only impacting the top 1%. Unfortunately its never that simple.

What amazes me is the tax and spend liberals like Schumer and Pelosi sit around and b!tch about SALT taxes. They want to raise taxes on everyone, then the hypocrites complain when it happens to them. WTF is that about?

I wouldn't count on Manchin long term on the bringing sanity to the discussions. He is raising his profile in the short term, but will in the end support most of Bidens proposals.

I don't really blame the people, rather the media and social media platforms. We saw this with the lab leak theory. 90% of the mainstream media is telling people that lab leak was a debunked fringe conspiracy theory. A lot of people are going to buy the state run media talking point. Most don't want to be painted as a fringe conspiracy theorist.

Same thing is happening with only 1% will be impacted by Biden's tax proposals.

Reasonable people can disagree on what tax policy should be. Unfortunately we only get one side of the debate from mainstream media.

Translation: I voted for the brain trust of Biden/Harris and no longer want to discuss politics and encourage everyone else to do the same so I’m not reminded of who I voted for. In fact, it would be great if the news no longer mentioned Biden or Harris ever again.

OP could’ve saved a lot of characters and just typed, “ I’m sorry I effed up and voted for a dude who doesn’t know what year it is and his running mate who is the biggest lightweight to be in national office who spread her legs to get here.”
