Oregon is playing really well so far and getting lots of strips and contested shots. If Mason wasn't going off Kansas could be down 20.

That can't be. Everyone knows the zone sucks and never works. Why would anyone even try to play a zone? If we can't beat them with man to man, we don't want to advance.
Kansas has been flat the entire game on offense. But yes if Purdue had played zone they would have won right? Kansas is having issues recovering emotionally from Thursday nite. They also have a shot blocker.

BTW I watched the 11 seed Rhode Island vs #3 Oregon game. Rhode Island should have won that game. These games are different every game. It's survive and advance.

Wow. Kansas is shooting less than 25% from 3 and less than 38% overall. Wish they had shot that poorly against us. We might have beat them with that kind of shooting.

Probably not, but my problem with CMP has always been that he never try's anything different. Altman coached a masterful game against a great team. Yes, different night, different team, but when your in a 1 & done situation, you better be ready to adjust.
I think if you read many of the poster who don't support PU playing zone this year, you'll see that their thoughts are based more on the players and their abilities ... we were not manned to play a zone.

We don't need to be Syracuse. You need to be able to play it and man. Oregon didn't play it the whole game. They showed it and confused KU, got a lead and went back to man. By that time, KU panicked and game was over. Every team should be able to play multiple defenses. If you can't/don't, your playing with 1 hand tied behind your back.
We don't have millions of dollars coming from a shoe company to help.
This really sucks. I hate Oregon probably more than I hate IU. ...and Gonzaga, too. It's been a bad year for me in sports.
Making sense is easy. It's the big dance ... it happens every year to many, many teams ... it's why you play the game. Thinking that one team is a lot better, or should win, or had a terrible loss ... no, it's the dance ....

Purdue was intimidated. It's a solid reason Biggie needs to return. One more year Biggie and earn your take. Don't settle. Never settle. Purdue also doesn't have a rim protector this was the biggest flaw with this team .
A team has to stick with it through thick-and-thin to have a chance of getting better at it, just like how the team will probably improve their man D next season after they stuck with it through a 32 point loss two nights ago. It's not any different of an approach when a team practices a defense for awhile. The only difference is everyone's used to seeing Purdue always playing man because that's pretty much the only defense Purdue players have been taught for decades.
The whole argument is ridiculous. Every player that has played basketball has played zone defense at some time in their career. It's not rocket science. Someone posted that we don't have the athletes to play zone. That's when you play zone, when your athletes don't match up man to man. The only reason there is a debate is because Painter refuses to use it. It's a tool to have in your tool box. If you need a pipe wrench, you can use a pair of pliers, you just won't get the job done.
For those saying we will be better next year (ha!), that won't be changing either.

This. Does anyone think PJ and Dakota could patrol the front end of a 2-3 zone? Now you put Eastern and Wheeler up there, you may have something. With Cline, Taylor and Ewing on the back line, maybe. Maybe Painter puts this 2nd five into the game as a change up next year?
But, but, but.......that is way too progressive for a play-style.
That is not "Big Ten' basketball. Motion offense. We are all about the non-athletic outside shooters with a lumbering post to clog the middle. Motion offense. If it works in the 1970's, 80's and 90's, it will still work. Did I mention motion offense?
A good man to man is everything, it's a man to man, it's a zone, it's a press, it's a 2-1-2, a 2-3, and if your sneaky enough it can even be a 2-2-2. The blue print is to recruit enough players with average foot speed and leaping ability. Then put a snarl on their faces and sprinkle on some grittiness. I think what's been missing is the floor slap. Do we not teach the boys to get in their crouch and slap the floor like we used to?
