My Cure (such as it is) for the NIL and Rampant Transfers

OK, I admit I know just about what every other college football fan knows about the NIL and the transfers rules. However, could the following work. Why or why not?

(1) All players sign a 4 year contract. Treat them like what they are - employees.
(2) All players get a base salary/stipend (identical for all players) plus bonuses for the best players (depending on actual production not potential).
(2) No transfers until a 30 day period after the last bowl game is played to give a level playing field to all college teams.
(3) Player option to opt out of the contract after 2 years and 3 years or if the head coach or his position coach leaves or is fired.
(4) Coach has the option to release any player after 2 or 3 years.

Also, I don't care if they are working toward a degree or even taking any classes. College football has become the minor leagues for the NFL so we might as well accept it and treat it like that.

OK, everybody. Tear into it. Tell me why this would not work.

The only issue is signing to a contract would open the door for collective bargaining. It may go that way anyways and then that would be fine. I think If you release a player you give them the option of getting a degree if they choose. I don’t like the idea of a kid going to college and then getting kicked out because they were recruited over. That might be 10% but I’d rather reward that 10% then the 90% who could care less anbout academics. Otherwise I think everything you say here makes all the sense in the world.

They’ll have collective bargaining as soon as the cases get through court appeals.

I'm okay with kids not getting a college degree as it is part of the job. They can go to college like anyone else and pay for it if it's important to them.

I don't disagree with your statement, but I get queasy just reading it and realize I'm being driven further and further from the sport. That will come to a head when the reports of NFL players who can't read or right are identified with major Universities.

I think we have multiple ones in the NFL already. This might just increase the numbers significantly.

One thing that colleges should be teaching athletes, whether you go onto the NFL, or not is how to manage finances. There are too many stories of athletes that made millions of dollars and ran through it all. Financial management should be a requirement.

THis wont hapoen but i would be in favor of setting up accounts payable at 27 with some max amount as part of the nil structure. Problem right now is that each player is essentially an indepedent contractor and theres no way to move forward without a collective bargaining agreement.
 
I think a multi-year player contract is inevitable. I think a 3-4 year contract would work best, but provide some situations where a player can transfer (i.e. head coach left, graduating, but not going in NFL etc). Have a progress towards degree requirement. These organizations are in the higher education business after all. Contracts could lead to other issues. will college sports see trades and trade deadlines?

The revenue sharing is an agreed amount so that is a start. I think NIL collectives should have a cap to it per university, sport, player. A cap will level the field, but give each team the flexibility how to allocate the monies.

Place severe penalties for tampering on the university and include the agents. (agents could be a whole separate topic) Tampering could be hard to prove, but it's happening.

Simple solution is to just remove spring practice from the agenda, and add a 2 week mini-cap at the start of the Summer (likely early June). Open the portal in February. They're still allowed to train on campus until the semester ends at all programs, although loose the use of the training staff once they officially transfer. Heck they're making $ now, they can afford to hire a personal trainer at this point, as most NFL players likely do in the off-season.

I also think once the judgement is decided on profit sharing, it opens the door to a CBA and multi-year contracts that have some teeth. Leave Purdue after you sign a 2 year deal, and you have to play those two years. You want to transfer, you have to sit through the rest of your contract, then you're free to leave. Trades could become a thing as well, and probably should be. If our backup QB that's under contract wants to leave, we should be able to get an equitable player, or compensation to use on said player, in return.

How would you transfer in the middle of the 2nd semester? Assuming the athletes are still in school.

You wouldn't. Would just wait for the end of the semester, as a typical student. The transfer, or commitment, could be facilitated without having to leave the current school immediately.

As I said, they have $ now, they can separate themselves from the program and still hire the training needed to go into Summer camp. What do NFL draftees do when they want to finish their degrees? They get drafted (transfer) in April, graduate in May, then join the team for their OTAs and Summer mini camps. Should be the same thing here IMHO. Maybe you simply push the transfer date back to April for all, which would make more sense. Once you eliminate Spring practice, there's really no need for a player to be on their new campus until Summer anyway.

Got it. Makes sense, at least more sense than what’s happening now.
