Yeah cause that’s what a lot of people would do. Leave a situation where my dad would get ancillary NIL for the place he went to.
I’m not painter hater. He’s done great at 95% of what you need to do. It’s a shame that smidge of changes he didn’t make may rob him of a natty. Still a phenomenal coach for the record
If you’re at Purdue, first off I’ve heard all scholarship guys got 6 figures. Because of edey, you’re gonna have tons of nil opportunities just for being a guy here. Unless you’re just this future pro who needs big minutes, I’m not buying that you just leave all that
On on3 they were talking about football nil and a few people said word was all bball players got at least what card got which is thought to be 150.
What do you think they got? $3? Anywhere close to what players don’t get where Newman is now?
I think Newman wanted an expanded role. I doubt NIL had anything to do with it.
99% of all D1 players think they're future NBA players. The just need the right situation. So, yeah, he thinks he is a future pro.
Painter didn’t need the roster spot. He certainly was just honest with Newman about the amount of competition for minutes that there would be at the 3 this year. No need to imagine some conspiracy.
Your love of Gillis takes you to this level of plausible deniability? Guys were getting tens of thousands at weekend one of the tourney and he left for what will amount to peanuts to show the world he’s a pro guard at a lower level.. when he got some minutes here and just didn’t do what a future pro does?
He needed three roster spots to dominate the tourney. As it stands we may still win it but it will be tough. Bad matchups will come at the four and three. Here’s hoping Heide and Colvin find their comfort.

It may or may not be principle related, but good business practice some would say. Again, this is not a video game where you plug in the attributes given instead of the attributes not taken and the results are clear. There is no clear cut guy that Purdue was going to get that was automatically bring a national title...just doesn't work that way. Is that guy willing to share the spotlight with Zach because Zach is already at Purdue. I have no idea what you mean with loyalty to two guys and then say Newman doesn't get the loyalty...and I really wanted Brandon to succeed
I don’t think BCfan realized that Purdue was under the scholarship limit (and still is); thus no need to run off Newman.
Paint could have signed another magic Mike guy after Jones committed and still kept both Gillis and Morton after Newman left.
I like BCfan's take on the football board, but I think he's a bit off on Basketball.
Purdue's roster is a little less flawed than the other teams that they played in Hawaii with possibly more room for improvement. Also, Painter outcoached Few and Barnes. I don't want to play Marquette again unless it is in final four or NC.
I have no idea how Purdue will do in the future. If nobody is sick at wrong time or hurt I think they will do fine. All I know is Purdue just won what many have considered the best field in the tourney ever and many of those other teams played well enough at the right time to win the tourney because that is all it is. Playing good enough to beat the match-up you have at a given time and location. That is why the field has better odds of winning than any particular team...and even if you kept the same tourney pairings the results would be different if played a few days later. That is reality.
I've enjoyed watching this team and appreciate all the work and sacrifice they do. I'll enjoy this team I suspect no matter how they do for a couple of weeks at the end of the season. I've never lapped up the hype of the tourney as some...and that is okay. A lot do like the flash in a pan that sometimes happens with a team that gets hot for a couple of weeks and plays better than maybe the months before. To each their own. I just know this team with the warts it has, is my team and five years from now with different players Purdue will still be my team...whether they go far in a tourney or not. I like good basketball, and I like Purdue, and right now Purdue fans are treated to a special time. Smell the roses along the way...you have no promise of the future...
never entered my mind that Matt ran anyone off. Many have left and say good things about Matt being honest with them. Here is a problem with many fans. Fans may think Matt needs to do this or that and when Matt doesn't, they think he is stubborn. No, the fact is he disagrees with those fans. Matt wants to win at the highest level, but he doesn't view the game the same as most fans and I think the same can be said for high school coaches as well. Go to a game where you don't care who wins and just listen to the fans state their opinions. Those opinions are ALL OVER THE PLACE. That is not to say that a fan cannot be right, but all those different opinions can only exist due to a different understandings... different sets of knowledge in a particular domain. That mere fact is why...no matter how a team does...there will always be fans and even parents and players that see some things different. Managing players is harder than the X and Os of the game IMO...and very possibly why Matt wants that personality test with recruits because he understands this.
Winning or losing is far more random than you might think. Yes, a single portal player might make a difference, but the odds say otherwise. Gillis has made a positive impact in almost every game we’ve played. It sounds like your perspective is that the devil you don’t know has to be better than the one you know. I just don’t agree.

Newman left of his own accord and you know it. Picked up Jones because Newman chose to leave. Not because he was forced out.
Honesty and integrity vs natty. Nothing says more about a fan (or coach) than that singular decision we all make.

Mason Gillis isn’t a good pair with edey to beat everyone you need to beat down the stretch. Are you saying otherwise?
And as for Morton, he was here for four years. Purdue fulfilled their commitment to him.
We still have one open scholarship. Painter could have taken someone and kept Gillis. Since he didn't, it either means nobody was interested or he feels Gillis/Morton are good enough to get the job done.
In my opinion, he should have kept both, but brought in a 3 point specialist. I liked Cam Spencer, but word was he was looking for a big payday. Too bad they don't grow on trees so Painter could just pick one.

Your entire line of thinking in this thread. You act like this is fantasy basketball. If Painter brought in the players you like, we win the NC. If we lose, it's probably because he didn't bring in your players. Painter should push Gillis out like he did Newman. You are fantasizing and making stuff up.
And you think you are somehow entitled to an NCAA championship at the expense of Purdue players' scholarships. That's some fantasy. When did your needs come before the players on the team?

But you are right about who should pound sand. The person who doesn't like it. Pounding sand will be more real than fantasizing about who MP should cut to bring in fantasy players.
This team is very likable .. I don’t dislike it nearly as much as the doomsdayers I saw earlier in the thread. More like the difference between might win it all and win it all fairly easily
Purdue/CMP will see many more Barnes/Izzo types coaching the referees the rest of this season. Best way to get Edey off the floor. If you can’t beat him, cry to the refs.
