Marquette vs. Purdue MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Both TN & M effectively extended our guard play way out with pressure which was disruptive to our Offense. Poor reffing helped on both occasions, but you'll have that.

We will see that from here on. It worked. It will be tried again. Prob only a few B10 teams have anywhere close to the personnel of what we saw in this tourney to give it a real go. But we will see it if coaches are worth their salt.

Good news is - that will be great for the Boilers to practice against to prepare for March.
Great wins by the Boilers esp last night , thought the odds were against us (tenn in double bonus w/ 12"35 to go)

Tape of this tourney will show the rest how to beat us. But only a few will have the personnel to execute the pressure. Got to keep improving. Staying injury free & the development of Colvin & Heide will be key to the season.
Teams already knew how to have their best chance of winning. This year is different than last year. No one thing is going to stop up this year.

Still no excuse to miss free throws. They are free points.
No disagreement, I will just reserve judgement for late game free throws when we aren’t playing 3 games in 3 days against the #11, #7 and #4 teams. I remember last year Braden and Mason were money in late game situations. I will hope the bigger sample size is more the normal than the gauntlet we just faced.

Complacency breeds mediocrity our opponents in March will be ready after we shoot our wad in our league

Wow, really just need to pause all negative comments, they just beat 11,7,4 on three days, just Wow!

Of course there’s things to do better, but that’s special what they just did, I didn’t think it would happen.

So Boiler fans enjoy this!

Happy Thanksgiving Boiler faithful

Proud to be a BOILER! Happy Feast Week! The plate is full!

Against cupcakes? Yes please. More Colvin and Heide. Look I hear you, but the championship game of the Maui Invitational is NOT the time to be giving freshmen teaching lessons. Colvin played 4 minutes today. His D just isn't there yet and it's pretty obvious to some of us.
I wasnt trying to say they should have played more today. I meant moving forward. These are the best teams we will face until March with the exception of bama and arizona.

Now its time to get those 2 rdy to help us in march

the blueprint on how to beat Purdue was written last year. you sag 4 guys around Zach and dare purdue to shoot the three. if Purdue hits 30% of their 3's, there is no stopping Purdue.

I know the legs were gone, but we need every player to shoot 10,000 Free Throws before our next game.

Next 2-3 games should be an opportunity for Colvin and Heide to get some real minutes. Absolutely no reason to see Morton even take off his warm ups. Not that I dislike him, but the kids need seasoning and he is a senior.
No, it is that you dislike him.

I think what I like best about last night/Maui is that Purdue proved last year wasn't a fluke and they are cemented as a top 5 program in the country.

The difference between this time last year is that I think they are far from a finished product with pieces like TKR, Colvin, Heide still figuring things out.

Last year's team peaked early and then held on for dear life. Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I think this current group is capable of playing even better than what we've seen so far.

Maybe the national exposure can help refs nationally become more aware of the mugging that Edey receives as well. They need to understand that it is ok to call an uneven game if one player is getting mugged on every possession. I get that Purdue fouls, but the fouls that Purdue commits are the types of normal fouls that teams commit when they are competing hard. They aren’t the explicit grabbing/mugging that Edey consistently experiences.

I’m not asking for star treatment. Just some guts to call the game correctly.

No, it is that you dislike him.
"This guy is a senior and doesn't need reps against scrub teams" seems complimentary if anything. But I would disagree, I think they should play him more and try to get him some additional shots in game action. Somewhere down the line he is going to be in a game in a big moment and we will need him to shoot with confidence.

I heard on BTN I believe, was a little drunk and sleepy, so not totally sure. They said Purdue when they become #1 Monday will be first Big 10 team in history, to be #1 3 years in a row. I heard it and thought no that cannot be true, but...... Hard to believe Boooby's teams never did this?

You don’t do that to seniors. If it’s their choice , sure, but if they are a starter and love the program, you just don’t.
Sometimes it appears that some want to treat a real life basketball program as a video game. Coaching is in the business of working with humans and all that make them different from each other, any outside influences and individual desires. When doing so as a team, then all those individual desires may not be allowed to make the best team. That is all important for the team today. That gets compounded when you now look to future recruiting in how you treat your players and such because any negative flags will be used against you in future recruits. This is not the only area that it appears some treat the team as a video game adding and subtracting some stat for that stat and so forth in this player for that player and such. There is a hell of a difference between a video game and real life.

You are right about the impact to recruiting. Screw over a player and the word gets around. High school coaches can and do influence their players. That’s why Tom Crean’s recruiting fell down a well. He “Creaned” too many Indiana players and the high schools just cut off the flow of good players.

lets not lose sight of the fact that these are 20 y/o kids and not grown ups.
How many of you parents would be ok with your son working his ass off for 4 years being part of a close knit TEAM and then the coach runs your kid off his senior year because he can sign someone that might end up better.
It takes years if not decades to create a lasting and widely known reputation.
Only take minutes to ruin one.

Okay. So.. lose a title you may otherwise win because of your loyalty to one guy? Newman isn’t here. For the better. Painter went out and got a dog who is going to look at small school guards and say “I am you, I don’t care how you think you come from nowhere.”

He needed to do that twice. Especially when his other two guys he plays with edey are centers. He needed a guy with power but also a lot of speed and quickness. A four version of Jones.

Maybe they still win anyway. If they don’t, that will probably be why.

It’s good. Have your principles. But you may end up trading a national title for loyalty to two guys. When I guess Newman doesn’t get that same loyalty .. which is weird

Actually TN added ball pressure on Smith and also limited what he did.....as M did also, but way better. That is the new wrinkle to over guarding ZE. Leave Smith alone and he with kill you as Gonzaga found out. Take out the Purdue 2 headed monster and you have a chance....but just a chance.

Difference between this year and last is that despite the flawed roster, edey may be enough for a natty anyway. The roster is definitely less flawed.

Yep hopefully a third and maybe even a 4th scorers keep us rolling.
Defending Purdue is like playing whack-a-mole. Take away one and another pops up.

This team just beat really good teams while missing threes, turning the ball over and playing against pressing, physical teams. In the past, all of those things would’ve taken Purdue out of the game. This team appears to be different.
