Just noticed we are on ESPN3 tomorrow. Awesome.

Shouldn't have to "solve all your problems" when you're paying for a service that provides over 200 channels many of them sports related and your team is ranked #11 and undefeated on the season.
I get what you are saying, but who shows what is likely determined long before this season even started. Streaming is the future of TV and besides it's youngstown state.

I'm just happy they have televised as many as they have.

Yet Penn St. vs Louisana - Monroe is airing on BTN at the same time (which makes no sense that THAT game was selected), and the epic showdown this evening in Gloomington with powerhouse McNeese St. will air as well on BTN.

3 things are guaranteed in life. Death, taxes, and some old fart whining about espn3.
I think wanting to watch the 11tj ranked team in the country is not asking too much regardless of my of anybody else's age! It's ridiculous that the gamesentioned are on but Purdue is not.
Someday you'll be an old fart like me and maybe you'll understand it. I do t understand why our age should have any bearing on it.

I somewhat agree, why does IU nad PSU get the BTN airtime this week. I almost wonder if it has to do more with the opponents actually getting coverage comapred to the BTN school. Oh well I will be streaming and drinking cold beer at home! Atleast its on ESPN3 which alot of people have included with their cable unlike the colossal rip off that is BTN2GO!

BTFU!

Sports & TV are one of the more complex subjects out there. It's a somewhat antiquated system - similar to cable bundling channels, etc.

First off, college basketball is a much more complex sport to schedule than say football that is played almost exclusively on a set day of the week once per week. The schedules are set in late summer by TV networks.

That brings us to the next complex part - TV networks. The way the TV rights work in the Big Ten is incredibly complicated. I don't fully understand it, but it's something along the lines of: ESPN/gets to pick a select number of games they want, then the BTN gets to pick a select number of games. Then ESPN goes back and gets to pick more games. Then the BTN gets to pick more. Etc. And it includes things like ESPN3.

This is how you end up with some big games on ESPN, some on BTN, etc. And meanwhile, ESPN is also picking games surrounding the multiple other conferences (and other sports) they also have rights to.

Quite frankly, the development of ESPN3 has greatly enhanced what is available. ESPN (and other networks) has received a lot of complaints with regards to the rights that they pay to have - yet do nothing with. For example, ESPN has long held the rights to the NCAA wrestling championships - an event that is obviously a niche sport, but also has a strong following. For years, ESPN had the rights to the entire tournament, yet only aired the finals. This prevented other companies that offered to broadcast the preliminary rounds from doing so - so the only way you could see it was to go in person or read the results. So now after years of complaints, ESPN broadcasts all preliminary rounds on ESPN3.

To get in a furor about a non-conference basketball game being on ESPN3 is probably not worth the time or energy to complain. Today, a ranked Louisville team is on ESPN3, a top 10 Oklahoma team is on a regional channel, etc. And quite frankly, there are a few good match-ups today. There are 3 ranked teams playing other major basketball programs on at the same time as we are playing.

And at the end of the day, we help determine our TV situation. TV ratings, including ESPN3, help determine what TV networks pick up. If Purdue fans don't watch, our ratings are certainly not going to be boosted by Youngstown State fans.

Excellent post. I haven't lived within 800 miles of WL in over a decade but I have been able to see 90% of our FB/BB games. That's pretty amazing.

Streaming is the future. A one time investment of less than $100 and you'll never miss another ESPN3 game. Or you can keep complaining about it instead.

I am in no way "defending" TV networks. ESPN3 has not really developed into what it is now until the last couple years really. TV networks and TV rights are definitely behind the times.

The NFL is a great example of stupid TV rights.

I didn't even have to log in. I just went to www.espn3.com and it automatically popped up with Frontier communications. Click on our game, plug in an HDMI cable from the computer to the tv and game on! I agree about BTN to go. I got rid of cable in June so I actually like espn3 games. I get to watch for free.

If you have decent internet, then use a Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV. A good quality low cost one is the Amazon Fire TV stick for $40; it'll let you do a lot more than just ESPN as well.

Age has a bearing insomuch that you're incapable of change, and instead of trying to embrace the new technology, you just complain about how you don't get to watch every show you want to on tv. As I'm typing this, I'm watching the Boilers on my big screen tv; streaming technology is very intuitive, if you would just try and use it. Purdue has had several games scheduled on ESPN3, so the fact that you haven't prepared for the game also leaves me with little sympathy for you.

Being old doesn't always equate with being tech-phobic. I like ESPN3 and streaming. It's nice to not be limited only to a TV and being mobile while still being capable of using HDMI to a big screen if I want.
