Since Painter was one of the few schools not to use the portal this year, IF he had used the portal, what should he have tried to get?
A more athletic big than what we have? Another G who can handle the ball/shoo? A big guard/small forward who can penetrate and score inside?

That is very hard to answer, since Purdue is arguably the only Power-5 basketball program (IMO) that refuses to go full-bore NIL (so far).
There are 3 scenarios...
1. Continue to do it the old-fashioned way with recruiting, because so far it has worked. This is where CMP is at and does not figure he needs to go NIL, over a recruited kid(s).
2. Join the NIL way of doing things because the recruiting method is no longer working, and conference foes are surging ahead of you.
3. See the NIL writing on the wall and retire from coaching because of it (Jay Wright). Which, BTW, would require Purdue to go ahead with a national coaching search and hire a proven coach and not a "lets hire this assistant and see what happens".

*All of the above assumes that the NCAA does not develop and enforce a NIL salary cap, so team A with alumni/boosters cant outspend team B that has alumni, but not as many boosters.

Marquette didn’t this year!

Purdue is using the NIL, just differently than other schools. We are using it for retention to make sure we don't have to go hire mercs every year. So far the teams with the most success using NIL have been getting one or two really good players out of the portal. The hiring entire teams each season hasn't had very good results.

just off hand w/o doing any research, I think that big from Yale ( Wolf ) would have been a good add

him or cliff…although wolf is averaging 5 turnovers a game right now
I would have like to have seen another bigger guard who can get his own shot, penetrate and finish. Marquette exposed our lack of athleticism at the guard spot, same as Uconn did.

Nick Pringle.....Coleman Hawkins.....Eddie Lampkin......

Honestly, it is hard to decide who at the 5 spot I would take because it was going to cost a lot for a mercenary on multiple angles. Highlighted 3 troubled children above.

Would have like Cliff because he is physical, provides shot blocking and rebounding. That is what is killing us right now. I don't know where this convo would be today if Jacobsen didn't get injured and lost for the year....

Ok, one other thing that is good for laughs.

Labaron Philon from Arkansas, the kid who seemingly couldn't miss against us. Elite freshman guard....he was going to be at Kansas. What happened? Well, Bill Self decided that AJ Storr was more important for their team so he got the boot for Storr.

I would take Philon over Storr.

Hawkins here would have been a ridiculously good addition.
Not sure what is going on with him at K-State but Woof!

I am not judging based on a handful of games but something isn't jiving just yet for KSU.

My assumption, he heard he was going to play home games in Manhattan and thought that was in NYC not Kansas.....

Haha (I assume) you’re joking cuz in reality that’d look really bad with future players haha. But I guess other teams do it …but that ain’t paint
Players transfer all the time. No recruit would bat an eye at a guy like berg transferring to a lower level where he’s more suited to play.

Take the money and run Coleman!

Tang should be fired for giving a career 10 and 5 guy 2 million or whatever he got. He's always been overrated IMO.

There are a few. A more athletic wing than Loyer that can play the 2 or 3 that could have stepped into Jones place and/or a center.

Storr - absolutely not. 7 schools in 7 years, not a culture fit and would ruin the chemistry and just not that consistently good
Mayo - yes
Ballo - lazy, out of shape, not very talented as much as he should be. Guess Coach B would have probably made him a lot better than he looks right now. He’s out of place and should be grabbing way more rebounds. Not a great tough either for a 5th year. I guess would have been good as a 4-6th scoring option and someone who could have helped rebound.
Richmond - can’t comment
Davis- volume shooter who doesn’t play defense and is lazy at times, not a Purdue fit
Carlyle - not a good shooter, trying to find his role as the non primary scorer and it’s not going that well—don’t think he’d add much
Rice - he may have fit well, but isn’t that physical or big
Robinson - can’t comment
Osobor- dude is soooo mid. TKR showed how much better he was in the tourney vs him. Can’t believe Washington paid potentially 2M for him to shoot 12 times a game and shoot only 35% overall from the field. He is not good.

But to be real here, painter wouldn’t have brought any of these guys in to be the top 2-3 scorers on the team. He has his 3 guys and they run his stuff better than anyone else in the country could…at least for the first half to 2/3 of the year. So if these guys were willing to do that, then maybe.

Kadary Richmond is a 6-5 guard that started out at Cuse and then spent the last 3 years at Seton Hall. Was considered the best transfer in the portal and is now at St. Johns. Averaged 15.7ppg, 7rpg, 5apg. This year is averaging 10, 6 and 6. Averaged 2.2 steals last year as well. Was All Big East 1st team and lead Seton Hall to an NIT title last year.

Jaxson Robinson is a 6-7 G/F that followed Pope to Kentucky. Started at Arky then Texas A&M. Played about 30 games total his FR and SO years. Went to BYU for 2 years and played 66. Averaged 14ppg and shot 35% from 3. He was the Big 12s 6th Man last year.

The best fit would have probably been Carlyle. A quick guard that has shown he can get at it defensively on the perimeter. You can say he was a bad shooter but remember, Lance Jones shot 28% the year before coming to Purdue and shooting 35.7%. Carlyle shot 32% from 3 last year at Stanford as a freshman.

Mayo may have been an even better fit just as a scoring option and someone to take pressure of of Smith to score and handle the ball(and kinda the same for Richmond).

Next year's what matters. Hope CMP brings a guy in.

For rebounding try to get Robert Morris's Alvaro Folgueiras 6-9/6-10 from Spain one of the nation's leaders in rebounding. Another guy is St. Marys Paulius Murauskas
Both have 2 years left.

What would he be 'great' at here? Did you think he was 'great' at anything at IL? Serious questions. He's certainly long and athletic.
Just add the athleticism on defense and maybe some scoring from the 4/5 spot. I’d say he’d be a nice fill in next to TKR. But I guess he wasn’t known as a dominant rebounder.

Maybe you should back off this Carlyle superman rant! This guy is shooting less than 30% from two and three. Defense??? Maybe if IU played somebody besides Pee-wee Herman and Mary had a little lamb, you could echo his defense, but he has shown practically nothing! Purdues freshman guards have been more productive than the over paid guard of IU! How much are you paying that dude?

Who exactly has Carlyle guarded that he can “get at it defensively”? UNCG or maybe South Carolina? Maybe it was eastern Illinois or even the rally tough team of Marian?

And he IS a bad shooter. Was bad last year and has been BAD this year. He has not shown the ability to be able to take people off the bounce consistently or hit big shots in a game like Lance did.

But remember, you cherry picked ONE year where Lance shot 28% but he showed in others he was better than that and Carlyle. It’s ok to say Carlyle is not who you all thought he’d be…although we all saw it coming.

In the past, Painter has been very public about who he was recruiting in the portal or as a grad transfer.

We all knew Painter was recruiting the guard from Michigan who came to Purdue.

When Carsen Edwards came to Purdue, we all knew he was zpainter’s third choice and we knew who the other two were. When Edey came to Purdue, we all knew he was Psinter’s third choice and we knew who the other two were - Fickenson and the guy who went to Creighton.

When Jones came to Purdue, we all knew Painter was recruiting both players from SIU and the player who went to Illinois was actually Painter’s first choice of the two players.

All of this is factual in press conferences. Painter has never tried to hide who he was recruiting.

So to answer your question. Just ask what player who was in the portal was Painter actively recruiting last year? If you follow Purdue basketball, you would know Cox was another one of those players that was not on Painter’s original radar. Much like Carsen Edwards, painter was recruiting some one else . Painter was watching that other player, and saw that Cox outplayed him, so he signed Cox.

So Cox is basically the answer to your question. The player that Painter was recruiting at that game, went elsewhere . And Painter obviously liked Cox better than any portal player he was recruiting. Painter was looking at the portal for another shooting guard. And he choose Cox over who he was recruiting in the portal.

Wasn’t Painter also recruiting the player from Wisconsin that ended up going to Kansas? I believe if Painter really wanted him, Purdue could have found the NIL money he was asking for.

I’m beginning to believe Purdue basketball is a lot like Major League Baseball and free agents. The money is available, but Purdue doesn't want to pay a portal player more than their current starters receive. Purdue doesn’t overpay for anybody.
