I went to a Windy City Bulls game last night. There was a player that I thought looked familiar. Turns out it was Jon Octeus. The kid still has some serious hops.

Not sure what to think of those perpetual D league players. Has to be a pretty hard life. They can't make much money and most will never get their shot at the next level.

Was he baptizing the masses?

Always thought he had a good chance to go overseas. And yes, he had/has major HOPS. Would have been nice to have him for more than 1 year.

It's not quite there yet, but with the Pacers acquisition of the Mad Ants in Fort Wayne, there are no independent D-League teams anymore. There are a few NBA teams without affiliates, but I imagine they will be looking to start up a team soon as most have speculated in the next collective bargaining agreement that rosters will be expanded so the D-league can be come a true minor league system like MLB. So that should mean better pay for D-league players and better opportunity to get called up as they are technically on a NBA roster. Currently it is tough for ones not to get signed because it means the NBA team has to cut loose a prospect they have some hope can develop.

Dudes are playing basketball for a living. Even if it's not much money, I'm sure most of them are enjoying it.

I'm sure they're enjoying it... who wouldn't playing the game you love. But, I see that you're in the Chicago area, and it's pretty tough to live around here on that kind of salary.

Jon Octeus was extremely helpful in turning this program around in 2015.I wish him only the best.

How much do they make? More than say a Purdue grad with a teaching degree teaching in an IN public school? If yes, then not totally "poor" pay (unless he has say an engineering degree) and he gets to do what he loves a little longer while feeding himself. I wonder if they get a housing stipend. Tough to live in a big city with low pay.

There are three salary levels for D-league: 25K, 19K and 13K. The players also get per-diem..

According to information I read last year and just looked up D League salaries jumped significantly thanks to the new CBA. The rumor is they are now 50-75k although I didn't take the time to look up when it would go into effect.

With salaries continuing to rise and NBA teams now investing in the D league, just a matter of time before your one and dones go straight to the D league out of high school instead of the college route. I truly believe that time is coming soon, just need one of the highly touted high school players to go that route and show it works before others follow.

I for one will be happy for the one and dones to go that route. Better for them and better for the college game. I wonder if we see a jump in parity in college once/if this happens? I'd have to think so.

I'm fairly amazed how little the D League paid out before. Now they are competitive with pro ball overseas salaries. I do think with D League and NBA players making more we may see more early entries into the draft with D league pay not being so terrible like it was before. Also I don't think you can go straight into the D league. You would have to play 1 year elsewhere after high school before entering the league.

You're correct. Unless the NBA changes the rule, they would have to wait/play somewhere for a year after graduating HS.

If anything it will just water down the product. The top schools will still get the best players and be dominant.

If you don't have one and dones in the mix, of which there are very few each year, then those that are left to share amongst colleges have more parity. I think the gap between the haves and have nots is smaller.
