IU did not deserve to be in CFP. Great article by USA Today

The strength of schedule needs to be a bigger part of the CFP selection process. IU's performance last night showed exactly what we all knew, IU did not deserve to be in the CFP. Cig's argument that they streamrolled their opponents doesn't hold water, since they beat the lower half of the CFP members this year. There is not a top 20 team that their team could have beat this year. I guess they can at least put up a banner that they made the CFP.

Here is a great USA Today article talking about this stupid CFP committee decision and there was no way that IU should have been in the top 12 for the CFP.

Before it’s all said and done there will probably be more teams that look like they didn’t belong.

They only beat one team above .500 and basically were throttled by anyone ranked. I would say ND is also in that category but we'll find out when they play Georgia if that is true or not.

Personally I think they need to just open it up to anyone ranked and just use the bowl locations to play these games. But I agree that at least in the current state, SOS needs to be factored in.

There were several other teams in the playoffs with similar non conference schedules. Look at Ohio st’s opponents. Although they were snubbed, Alabama had a very easy non conference schedule. Notre dame had a rather easy schedule. They had a gimme game against Purdue. Boise st had a very easy schedule.

Purdue also had a couple of easy non conference games. Unfortunately they lost.

But IU also had a terrible conference schedule. And they bought out the one decent non conference game they had scheduled at Louisville.

I mean, it all worked out and they were rewarded for it but it is going to change the selection process going forward. TV is not going to like the fallout from this where all teams stop scheduling any intriguing games out of conference because there is no benefit to playing them. And TV is footing the bill so they will get what they want.

Think many people were saying this the last half of the season. They should have had to prove themselves against Ohio State to get in.

I think it also proves that 12 teams is too many.

I agree 12 teams was too many. I can’t believe Boise st was deserving. IU had a very weak schedule. They were forced to play Purdue. But was Alabama more deserving than IU?

My thoughts are to limit the playoffs to conference champions. Period!

As for IU, I feel bad for their alumni. they finally have a great year. And rather than getting a nice package vacation deal to go to Florida or California for a week , and enjoy the sun and vacation and a bowl game. They were forced to travel to south Bend on a cold Friday night. Whoopie!

Drove past campus yesterday afternoon as I was out trying to secure an elusive Christmas gift and from my observation there were a lot of IU fans that seemed to be having a pretty good time. They will be ok.
 
Some Indiana Hoosiers have a fun time where ever they live. Just give them a 6 pack of PBR. In going to Purdue for 5 years, I visited south Bend once. It was not on my bucket list of places to visit.

My point is if you are an alumni of a school that never goes to a bowl game and you finally get a chance to go to one, Going to Sough Bend on a Friday night would not be my first choice.

Many UW fans went to the Rose Bowl for a week and didn’t even go to the game.

Many Purdue fans that went to the Outback and citrus bowl games had an opportunity to combine the game with a nice vacation!

South bend? That’s like waiting 20 years to go to Fleet Michigan for Christmas! I’m sure with enough PBR, they would have a great time and feel good.

Sure, they have the preseason #2 ranked BT basketball team to look forward to this winter…..well, maybe they should back to drinking that egg nog.

I was talking to a buddy yesterday and he was outlying the rule for the home games (as he understood them). CFP sets the ticket prices for the game (I assume the gate is split but don't know). Home team gets all of the concessions, parking. All interior advertising has to be removed, and CFP gets the ribbons/boards for ads.
 
Hard to argue though with just 1 loss in the B1G with quite a few lopsided wins regardless of the fact of what ended up being an easy schedule.

IU deserved to be in CFP. They did not set up the conf schedule. Many of the CFP teams played weak ass out of conf schedules. Ga has played two out of conf games away in the last 10 yrs. Most of the neutral away games have been played in Atlanta. A home game for Ga. Will USA have a column on why SMU should not be in the CFP? They are playing like crap! Three or four TO’s, down 21-0.

Not hard at all to argue against it from the perspective of earning a chance to play for a national championship. If you have no good wins during the season and you didn't win your conference, you shouldn't get in. IU pretty much just proves that.

No because SMU has wins against two ranked teams, beat Louisville who IU took off of their own schedule prior to season, and didn’t get slaughtered in the losses they did have.

Home field advantage had a lot to do with the first two games. I believe in the future that has to be eliminated especially if they go to 16 teams!
 
I guess using those same standards and rules, SMU should NOT have been invited to participate in the playoffs either as they are getting blown out as well.
 
Yes, we had a weak schedule, but we were 11-1 is a weak argument. If that is true, then in March Madness there should be a lot of 25 and greater wins get in the NCAA Tournament then.

There would be a lot of BT, ACC, Big East, etc. schools that shouldn’t get in, because their record would be worse than all of these smaller schools that didn’t play equal schedules, but have better records.

I think we all agree that wouldn’t be fair in basketball, so how is that fair in football.

I hear you TC.....I think Miami's loss to Syracuse and Alabama's to Oklahoma probably really made the difference....and those helped SMU and Indiana the most, IMO. No bad losses helped THIS time because of all the carnage with teams that had better wins.
