Illinois at Purdue MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Laughed at this one. Not sure what it is with teams who are orange being insufferable (Illinois, Tennessee etc). Sure hope we take care of business.

… Jesus, lol. Weird post.

Purdue/Illinois is NOT a series that I perceive bad blood for from the Illini side, and I don’t see Illini fans like trying to claim Purdue as a rival (as if that’s some status symbol vs. any other currently-good program?). In fact, given Illinois’ history of multiple instances of bad blood with Indiana, if anything I detect remarkably LITTLE animosity between Purdue and Illini fans.

Here’s to a good game tonight.

Obviously I spend too much time on Twitter watching the craziness of Illinois fans - compared to most, they are insufferable.

Lol, well I’ll certainly accept the label of crazy! Any big state school is going to pick up some, err, less than impressive fans. And we are quite passionate about our Illini, and that often manifests itself as insanity. 😂

Looks like the Boilermakers have the sports world all to themselves tonight unless you do a little NBA pre 8:30

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Tonight it's the #9-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini (11-2; 2-0) visting Mackey Arena to take on the #1-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (13-1; 2-1) in an early conference showdown. Tip is scheduled for approximately 8:30 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1).

Projected Starting Line-Ups:

Illinois - Quincy Guerrier, Coleman Hawkins, Marcus Domask, Ty Rodgers, and Luke Goode

Purdue - Zach Edey, Trey Kaufman-Renn, Lance Jones, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

______________________________

Illinois is coming off a very impressive smashing of Northwestern earlier this week, winning 96-66 at home without its top scorer, and Purdue had its own impressive showing on the road, ending Maryland's 19-game home winning streak with a 67-53 victory.

Marcus Domask now takes on the role of the top scorer for the Fighting Illini with Terraece Shannon, Jr. suspended and is coming off a 32-point game against Northwestern. Domask averages 13.2 PPG and 4.6 RPG and has scored in double figures in his last four games. Quincy Guerrier is the team's top rebounder at 7.4 per game, and is second in scoring with 11.0 per game. Coleman Hawkins is a strong 6'10 post player who moves well and can do a little of everything. Hawkins is in his senior season and is averaging 10.3 PPG and 5.5 RPG. The Illini are one of the teams that can match up better with Purdue in the front court. Dain Dainja is a 6'9, 270-pound forward adding another 7.5 PPG and 4.3 RPG off the bench. Look for some battles in the paint tonight.

Illinois is currently ranked 8th overall according to KenPom. Their offense ranks 12th in efficiency and their defense ranks 18th. The Illini play relatively fast as they rank 62nd in tempo out of 362 Division I teams in pace of play. Purdue is currently ranked 2nd overall according to KenPom. They have the 2nd most efficient offense in the country, and the 6th most efficient defense. Purdue plays slower than Illinois, they rank 159th in the country in tempo, but that is faster than Purdue teams of the recent past.

Illinois has solid big men and the potential to cause some problems for Purdue in the paint and on the glass. Expect the Fighting Illini to also try to get some advantages in the back-court with some isolation action, which worked really well against Northwestern. This should be a physical, hard-fought contest, and the Boilers will get a real challenge tonight on both ends of the floor.

The Boilers will really need to execute well tonight - expect Zach Edey and Braden Smith again to be the focus of the offense and the Illinois defense. What will Purdue get from the bench and the rest of the starting line-up? Fletcher Loyer should get some opportunities as well as Lance Jones.....if they can provide scoring production, Illinois will have a dilemma on the defensive end. Whichever team can control the glass will also have a key edge in the game. Purdue has been better lately with turnovers - no question they need to really focus on taking care of the ball tonight.

The winner tonight gets an early step in front of the other in the conference standings. Each team has its work cut out for it. Can the Boilers keep things rolling tonight?

We shall see in a couple of hours or so.

Boiler Up, my friends...

the other side believes this is a 50/50 game. I don't, Purdue has a better than 75% chance to win. Play their game with efficiency and they are damn close to unbeatable.

Wow, the Illini sure are a cocky bunch.
Meh, I disagree. I post on that board more than any Rivals board, and I think fans are (1) on a bit of an emotional roller coaster right now and feel VERY attached to this group of players and (2) were pleasantly surprised and very proud of how the team responded in our first Big Ten game without Shannon.

Sure, some drank the Kool-Aid and think we are rolling and that will continue at Mackey. However, I think most are just pumped that we can feel even semi-hopeful in our guys heading into the number one team’s house, and they might as well pick them to get the W.

If you’ll notice, most fans have emphasized that we are playing with house money … in other words, NOBODY expects us to go knock off #1 on the road without our All American. So really, as an Illini fan, nothing dampens my spirits for our team tonight. A win would be an epic statement. A loss, no matter how bad, and we just take it as expected and move on.
