Yale at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Good win against a decent team. We aren't there yet. Average team right now. Not sure if going small may not be our best option. Smith, Fletch, Cox, Harris, Colvin and Heide along with TKR. Everybody is going to have to rebound.

Heide and Colvin are capable, but yeah, it will have to be all hands on deck. Really liked what I saw from Colvin, Heide, and Cox on both ends - they were a big part of the victory. Centers are going to have to grow up fast for Purdue to get to next level......we shall see.

Big time test Friday when the Crimson Tide comes calling.

Smitty with 22/9/6 and 5 steals......couple of bad turnovers, but still a very good game for the floor general.....well done.

Post game card....
Loyer great this year.
Smith controlled game. Scored at will.
Number of scorers/bench scoring
Colvin D showed major effort
TKR had a big game against decent competition
Heide woke up
Cox was a super sub

Things to work on.....how did they do...
✅Got to cut the TOs
Overall # NOT bad. Had several silly TOs, just not needed. Some of these by Smith. Too much experience for that. But ten - that's ok

✅our interior D still sucks
Jacobson big loss. Time will improve this, but now it's really low level. Teams will abuse us until this gets cleaned up. This will keep us from winning B10 imo if something isn't done.

✅ Defensive rebounding poor
Still needs help. Give up way to many 2nd & even 3rd chances. Champs don't do that

✅Need to draw more FT shots
2nd half was fantastic improvement

Yeah think TKR at the so called 5 with Heide, Colvin, Loyer, and Smith is probably the best lineup keeping Harris and Cox mixed in there. Berg obviously is going to play some, but he's more of a liability right now. Not confident in Furst or Burgess at all right now against high level talent.

Just need that lineup to REBOUND. Not get every one but a majority of em. Let’s hope they’re able to do that.

right now we dont have a 5 worth a darn. all 3 did nothing all night. i think smith had more rebounds than all 3 put together. the defense was just plain bad. on offense, smith is dribbling way too much. needs to rotate the ball. too many empty possessions.

We did score 89 points on offense.. but otherwise agree

and look at the score. that was not a good thing or something i want to see in the future. You actually believe Yale was a good team ? ha. we just played down to their level. I'd hate to believe we almost lost.
You watch the game? Refs were atrocious…just horrid. Kept Yale in the game.

Also, Yale picked second in its conference. Went to tournament last year and upset Auburn…they return 6 players from that team, including their current best player this year (the best player from last years team, Wolf, went to Michigan) .

So yeah, Wole, they are going to be good…probably will be in tournament again.

Did you watch the game or just look at the score. We played much better with Heide playing the 4. Yes Yale is a good team and painter talked a lot about that. You realize Yale beat auburn in the tourney when John put up 28 points. We were only favored by 14.5 points and we looked better than that with Heide at the 4.

But but but!!!! Wole said Heide won’t play the 4?!!

Yeah yeah and Colvin was going to leave for not being a starter. And Furst was not a 4 (he played some last night as well with TKR defending the 5!) And that catchings left because painter wouldn’t play him at the 3 since you know painter is so rigid at playing everyone at their prescribed positions.

Fact is our interior D and defensive rebounding are not close to B10 champs level. Coach has a lot of work to do to instill the WILL to box out.

It would be a shame for a team with these great guards to not figure it out.

Heide got 6 Rs in limited minutes. Encouraged by that. Conversely, not encouraged by the times he is preferring to use jumping ability over boxing out.

Our inside guys & even guards need to develop a nasty attitude and seek out & attack their guy for position. Something to watch.

At times in the past they called CMP Mr. January. I think it's going to take every bit of the time between now and then to coach these guys into the mental toughness they need to have without Edey.

Paint said in the presser a lot of this is due to guys wanting to help too much and then went on a fun 5 minute explanation of the defensive intricacies and breakdown. People give him crap for not playing a zone but his man is very complicated. He also talked about that we tend to poke away rebounds instead of grabbing them. Several times Berg was in position on the blockout and didn’t come down with it. Burgess a couple times too. It seems like he sees the issues which are technique related and knows what needs to be done to fix them.

I didn’t watch the game, so take this with a grain of salt, but I see in the box score that Heide had twice as many rebounds by himself as the combined total of Berg, Furst, and Burgess. Right now, small ball sounds like a pretty good option as it gets Heide on the floor. Obviously, you can’t play small ball all the time, but I think it might allow Purdue to really open things up on offense and put bigger teams in a bit of a bind.

Paint said in the presser he decided to sacrifice defense for offense and then Heide went out and got some key rebounds and paint seemed surprised it worked out. We did such a bad job rebounding and with TKR playing so well with his back to the basket and posting up on offense it makes sense and if Heide can get rebounds on defense it works out as long as he can man up. With all the switches I’m not sure its even that big of a deal.

I think our problem will be when we face teams that are good defensively and offensively. We are good offensively right now and are a work in progress on the defensive end.

I just don't see the offense struggling much this year. We are lucky to have BS and FL controlling the offense. We are seeing some uncharacteristic errors/to's by BS and once he completely trusts everyone these will go away.

If, we get both sides of the game under control. We will be hard to beat!

Great "D" from Colvin and Smitty there.
Last year there were some very concerned that Myles was not getting the minutes needed to improve and help the team in the tourney due to his D and ball sticking in his hands a bit and less movement without the ball. This year he is better on those things and especially his on ball D. For a couple of games he has had the opponents best scorer and is significantly better than last year on D

and Painter is making a point to let him know and appreciate the contribution he's making and acknowledging the work he's put in.....positive reinforcement - he's earning his way, and everybody's better off for it. He was very good on Poulakidas last night, or as Painter calls him - John.
