Texas A&M Corpus Christi at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Rocky moments but also great glimpses of the potential......plenty for Paint to get on them about, especially the turnovers.

Braden Smith really turned it on the latter stages to right the ship......all in all.....not a bad start to the season. Liking the debut of Jacobsen - he will be a difference maker in the paint down the line.

We as fans need to be prepared for some bumps in the road. We will be relying heavily on freshmen to go along with our veterans. We should be solid come February however.
Agree, but I came away from the game thinking that a lot of the issues are correctable and thinking that this team could be really good in time with Jacobsen at center. He’ll get pushed around, but he is skilled on offense and has nice timing on defense.

I believe Purdue found it’s starting 5. Who would have predicted it would be Jacobson at center, tkr at the 4, Harris at the 3 smith and Loyer with Colvin coming off the bench to provide instant offense

Hmmmmmmmmmm

And that Gillis would not start at Duke but would be an experienced guy off the bench And mentor to their younger players!

Winner winner chicken dinner for the guy who supposedly knows nothing! Just ask big and chi chi

I predicted Jacobsen to be the center but not Harris starting, though that'd definitely best.

Everyone said Jacobsen was going to start. lol.

4 years ago Furst looked excellent until
He got Covid than hurt his foot, the fact that now as a Sr he only plays 2 minutes in an opener is crazy to me. I know it’s only game 1 but he’s got to be the better/more athletic player than Berg off the bench. I hope Furst as the season goes on at least turns into a 10-12 minute player a night.

Excited about this team! DJ gives us an instant rim protector - when he bulks up this offseason look out! Love the on ball D Cox and Harris brings to this team. Smith clearly wasn’t looking to score tonight but he will when we start seeing the big boys. Looks like Loyer has a bit more strength and TKR is gonna be a load this season. Heide concerns me but Colvin is gonna add instant offense off the bench. More up tempo with athletes all over. Not gonna be smooth but it will be fun to watch this team continue to improve!

Uh that was predicted by just about everyone and widely reported. Only real question was at one point in the season would DJ pass Berg. You also said Heide doesn’t play the 4 which he did tonight and said Harris was a great shooter who did not look it tonight. You talked crap about Colvin and basically said he was going to leave if he didn’t start well he was our lightning rod and looked fine. Also heard nothing from you about cox and he was great. So you predicted the two most obvious predictions that was already being reported but were off the mark on the rest. Keep gloating

And Gillis in his last year would be a bench player at Duke and mentor! What wild prediction!
saw some Gillis tonight vs Maine, missed 2 wide open 3's from the corner on the same series, they were up 28 so it was time to turn on some football. It was somewhat odd seeing him in a Duke uni

Furst should have transferred two years ago. A shame to see him not pan out.

I thought DJ and Smith started to show some chemistry in crunch time. DJ looked more on the same page than any of the other centers with Smith. I do think the starting 5 is set, unless Furst steps up and takes it from DJ, which looks unlikely right now. Free throw shooting, and turnovers look to be the 2 biggest weaknesses on this team.

Need him to bulk up throughout this season haha. But he’s gonna be fun to watch and there will be a learning curve but he’s going to be good!

Hello, 911, id like to report a murder.

Berg shot 1-6 from the free throw line, accounting for half of our 10 misses. If that’s his norm, he will be nearly unplayable, as he doesn’t do enough things significantly better than other options at the backup 5 to justify minutes.

Correct. If he wants to stay on the floor, he needs to hit FTs and finish those bunnies from Braden around the rim. He was decent on the defensive end.

Furst is pre-med and has been dating a women’s volleyball player for a couple of years. Some things are more important than transferring just to get more minutes.
He could have went to Butler and played. Could have went to IU Indy and dominated. IU Indy is about an hour from Purdue. But I'm assuming he figured he'd play. I think Painter has gotten stuck on wanting a 7-3 guy on the floor. Furst is probably the better option over Berg at this point.

Or Furst wants to be a part of a program that wins. Kid has been a part of a lot of WINS—hasn’t lost a non conf game in his career, won Maui, won Phil knight, been to 2 S16s, 1 E8, 1 F4, a NCRU, 2 B1G outright by multiple games, a BTT, been ranked #1 3 years in a row which never was done before by a big ten team…

So maybe he doesn’t care if that means he plays or not. Also, like we have all mentioned before, he’s pre med and finishing that up. His fiancées is going to dental school at Ohio State so I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes to med school in Ohio when he graduates.

Furst is still a Boilermaker through and through, and I'm glad he didn't transfer. Hope he finds some opportunities at redemption this year.
Matt is seeing what the new guys have. He knows what he has in Furst. When the Big 10 teams come around, that experience is going to be more important than it is now. He looked good in his limited minutes and I suspect he'll be in the rotation in the end.

Or with turnovers. Most BAD passes I can remember in one game. for a game with 15 assists, he was awfully loose with the ball.
One TO was a kicked ball that wasn’t called and his first one of the year was stepping out on the sideline, which was uncharacteristic of him.

He seemed to be playing “too perfect” and needs to play more free. He will get there, but could be games where he has high TOs.

To be fair, he also should have had 20+ assists. He set his teammates up nicely at the rim and open shots that they just missed.

You are making judgements while we are playing teams that we are much bigger than.
When the Big 10 (and better pre-season games) come around and teams are as big or bigger DJ is going to look much more fragile. And his troubles grabbing the ball in traffic likely will get worse.(turnovers)
He looks promising to be sure, but again you can't really make those calls about who will be playing when it counts from 2 scrimmages and 1 game against a much smaller team.
Edit: I DO agree that he seems to grasp what to do playing with Braden. It also matches his skill set to this point. He's not going to get post up looks most of the time, so his offense is going to come on putbacks and lob dunks. Nobody better than Braden at that.

Or he could have stayed at Purdue and worked on getting a degree from a prestigious university.

No question about that with the turnovers - six, and he owned up to it after the game in the press conference, basically saying "he has to be better.....15 assists doesn't matter much when you do that....."

Hopefully, we see more of the last part of that game regarding decision-making......

He and TKR had 10 of Purdue's turnovers.....most of those just lack of focus. Certainly have to improve on that. We'll see come Friday.....

Disgree. Furst has had 4 years, where as Berg has not played many minutes to even get going. At this point Furst can be used for his Christmas elf experiences. Those are funny. So many people want to count someone out that hasn't been given much time on the court and think Furst who has had 4 years, needs more minutes. Doesn't make sense. Anyway, Berg may not pan out to be what some think he could be, but we need to allow him some time.

I have to agree with you Whiplash. Jacobsen certainly has potential, but have you seen what awaits him in B10 play? Goodness. Several teams have the whole "twin towers" mojo going. Not saying these guys are all world beaters, but there are some formidable matchups on the horizon.

Michigan... Golden and Wolf starting together. Golden was quiet last night, but Wolf was phenomenal with 19/13. Tschetter was aggressive and productive off the bench.
Maryland... Reese and Queen both start. We know what Ju Ju can do, but Queen just went for 20/20 last night. Super impressive frosh.
Illinois... Ivisic and Humrichous. Ivisic was granted eligibility just recently, and that just might put Illinois in position for a B10 title. Ivisic went for 14/14 last night. Humrichous will be a solid contributor all year. Both can shoot from range and pass.
Wisconsin... Winter and Crowl are both proven, physical players. Crowl had a quiet night, but he's a 5th year veteran who will have his moments.
Michigan State... Booker and Zapala start with two very physical reserves coming off the bench in Cooper and Kohler. More quantity than quality here, but teams like MSU might wear on Jacobsen.

The list goes on. No doubt our bigs need to get settled into their roles quickly, because it isn't getting any easier.

Just for the record, illinois took a HUGE loss in their second exhibition.

I don't know what kind of med school Butler has but IU and IU Indy have good med schools. I mean he really could have went anywhere. He could have stayed in the B1G and went to like Northwestern. And there isn't an argument of Purdue over Northwestern when it comes to academics.
