Northern Kentucky at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Positives:

1. Defensive pressure and rotations much better.

2. Furst sighting in 2nd half

3. TKR 6-8 FT. He finally looked comfortable and wasn't aiming but just shooting IMO.

4. Loyer is en fuego to start the year

4. Team had to win a B1G style grinder. It wasn't pretty, but all experiences matter early on. Guys will grow much more from this than beating Midwestern Illiinois State Technical Institute by 45.

Smith and Edey played so well together…Smith will need time to adjust not having that dominant player at the 5 in which he could use the great screening by Edey or drive and lob it to him. Those plays are not there anymore.

I think Jacobsen needs a year in the weight room…a redshirt would benefit him and the team. Two games into the season…already hurt. Though…I did not see the play in which he was hurt.

Not a fan of “Whose house - Our House” chant when we played in the national championship two games ago and are facing a non-power conference team on our home court.

Hoping to see Jacobson back soon.

So tradition doesn’t matter?

Don’t think more muscle would have saved him there. Also, it makes more sense imo to have him play as many mins as possible to adjust to the speed and physical play of D1

Plays are there, just the other player not named smith aren’t used to them yet.

37-24, Boilers @ the half....7-minute scoreless drought hurt. Need a good burst to open the next half.
Not sure where this was in the game since I just got home a few minutes ago. That said, the matchup zone had Purdue playing against it as a zone rather than man and the matchup is man where they try to keep the defenders playing man in the area of the court they are better defenders…similar, with a slight twist to switching like Purdue does,

In the second half it appeared to me that Purdue came out of the gate with much more movement through the lane trying to disrupt their handoffs which resulted with Purdue getting some better looks.

Also thought Purdue was a bit slow
Flashing a player into the middle of the 1-2-2 3/4 preas that was pretty passive. Four freshmen played and iPurdue has a lot of rough edges, but that should be expected. I like this team and think in a couple of months, the play will be substantially better.

You would think that would light a fire, but he just doesn't seem like that kind of player. Maybe his plan is to stick around all 5 years and gradually grow rather than get his while he's in. That being said, we really need him to get his now.
Do we though? Haven’t really missed him..

I loved seeing him go to the rim hard like that. This team needs him to be aggressive IMO.
Absolutely! That’s what we all want to see! He just seems so passive/timid/not looking to attack whatsoever. I’m not sure if he’s been told that’s not his role anymore or what (I cant imagine paint said that).

Not sure this is related BUT There was an article that Casey posted yesterday about guys bringing the energy and maybe he’s not doing that as much? I dunno just trying to come up with something as to why he’s so…out of it?

I liked Furst in H2. Had a quick spin move that worked.

I liked what Burgess was doing too. But not finishing was disheartening.

I did not see what you saw with TKR. I have been hyping him as 2nd team All Big Ten. First game backed that up. Last night made me wonder again if I was out to lunch on TKR - given the level of competition. He did not distinguish himself out there significantly imo. 5 R vs that competition....come on?? What happened to his great footwork?
Something to watch.

I think that this team is going to need a higher defensive efficiency. The offense so far might need it. That was hard to watch at times. Lol

I agree overall he did not play his best.

I meant the positive I took away from today is he shot 6-8 at FT line and looked like he got in a groove and was comfortable.

It's a huge positive to monitor because it leaves a lot of points off the board when a go to guy bangs FTs at 50% like Trevion did.

It will also help in crunch time if he isn't a liability shooting FTs.

If we can get those mins outta Furst consistently, then that would be amazing.

TKR got fouled a bunch last night and with Berg in, i think he grabbed more/was taking up more space than the first game to allow TKR to get those boards. Great to see him hit his FTs at a higher %. He also only played 24 min last night so I’d assume had he played similar mins as the first game, he would have had more boards.

Also, NKU played a 3/4 press to slow down the offense and possessions were about 60 a piece from what I heard from Joe Jackson on Boiler in The Stands….so not as many opportunities for rebounds.

BUT on the flip side, they did have 18 offensive boards to our 8, so he could have been better like you said, to help minimize those 2ns chance points. Smith only had 2 boards, which was low for him, but he was done at the 8 min mark of second half.

Excited to see this team and how they compete vs better competition starting on Monday with Yale and then playing a NC favorite on Friday. Very good learning opportunities for the team and staff.

That article was aimed at several players. I won't pretend to know who, but the above comments are very applicable.
