Epperson, Manley, and Eastern
Epperson, Manley, and Eastern
Is anyone still optimistic on Eastern? Would love him but haven't heard much lately that gives me a good feeling on that one.
One nice thing about not filling all our spots early is the flexibility to wait on Epperson since he's deciding in the spring. And last I heard we are fairing well in his recruitment so far.
Really want Manley but have to be a little wary with UNC so involved. Hopefully he sees that he will be recruited over out there and that they could be on some serious sanctions.
Eastern, Harms and Wheeler with a spring addition.
If Eastern waits until spring to sign I think our chances increase.
A class of Haarms, Manley, Wheeler and Eastern would be a great class. I'd love for us to try and get Epperson too.
Epperson considers himself a 5 while Haarms considers himself a 4.Eastern is the least likely of all these. Haarms is our most likey.
Edit. Looks like we got Haarms which means Epperson will be more unlikely. Epperson down to 10%.
Epperson considers himself a 5 while Haarms considers himself a 4.
And you know this how?He is recruited to be a 5 no matter what he considered himself to be. As I consider myself to be a 10... What we need is a bruiser at the 4 with CE as dribble penetrator.

That's interesting since he hasn't done it at the college level yet.He is not quick enough to guard a 4.

You should have this tattooed on your forehead, because that phrase fits you better than anyone else on here. I knew you haters were going to find some reason to not like this pickup, I guess I just didn't realize how ridiculous you would get about it.Y
Some posters live an a fantasy level on this board. We look at what we want and hope for over the reality of what is.
From the videos I've seen, he sure looks quicker than Biggie and hasn't had a chance to work with Josh Bonhotal yet. I think I'll wait until that happens to make a declarative statement. He is not quick enough to guard a 4.
*****************Yes, you're right. We have no idea if THAT 7' 2" GUY can guard 4-men. No idea at all.
Well, last year we got KILLED quite often, Maryland comes to mind off the top of my head, because our slow 6'9" guy couldn't guard 4's. And I mean killed at times. How often was our 5-star power forward not on the court, like at the end of the ARLR game, due to matchup problems?
So yes, even though he has never played a college game, I think it's pretty safe to say he can't guard 4-men at this level. So, unless we play zone . . . . is that gonna happen with this coach, he can't play at 4.
Here's an idea: why don't we play him at point guard? "He hasn't done it at the college level yet". Maybe it will work.

He is not quick enough to guard a 4.
If he isn't quick enough to guard the 4, then it sounds to me like he wouldn't be quick enough to guard a small versatile 5 either? I would like to see him play more like a four on offense. Not stuck right under the rim. Force the other team to come out on him and clear some lanes. If he is too slow to guard the four, then have him guard the five. Get an athletic and strong four. Manley would do nicely. Somebody that can play the 5 but is athletic enough to guard a four. I like the idea of a big man that has a 15 footer, but we need somebody to be able to rebound with him playing out. JJ used to play out and he could shoot. The rebounding would suffer when we weren't hitting shots. Haarms looks like he could move really well for a 7 footer, but it will take a lot of strength and conditioning to turn him into a 5 like Haas. I would say use his strengths. He can stretch the defense and knock down shots. He is also big and agile enough to guard the post. It may take him a year or two to get the hang of it, but he could be a really nice four year player. I don't think they would redshirt him if Biggie leaves unless they sign somebody like Manley. The coaches should be all in on Eastern and Manley. Whatever they can legally do, they should be doing it. Manley solidifies the front court for the future (especially if Haas or Vince decides to leave). Eastern gives us another athletic guard that has size to be an all big ten defender and has the basketball understanding to be a game changer. Adding him would set the future up very nicely when you mix him with Boogie, Haarms (and Manley if we can land him over UNC and Xavier). It would also take a lot of pressure off of finding another combo guard type player in the 2018 class. Haarms was a very nice pick up, but we have a long way to go. Haarms seemed like our most likely pick up, so although it is a really nice get, we can't afford to go 0-2 on Manley and Eastern. Manley may be a tougher sell now, I am not sure, but Haarms isn't rated so maybe he wouldn't view it as chipping into future play time. Eastern has no competition and with the mass exit Purdue will have after next season, he would be a starter as a sophomore. Quickest path! He would see minutes as a Freshman as well, but nothing near starter minutes. MSU had a top 3 class last year and will have another top class this year. He will be stuck behind folks until likely his senior year. I think MSU is the biggest competitor against Purdue for Eastern at this point.
I get your concern. My observation as that Biggie was out of position sometimes, and was not able to get back to his correct spot quickly enough. That has a lot to do with understanding the defensive game, more so than his physical speed. Now that is just what I saw. If Biggie figures out where he should be, then his supposed foot speed will not be a problem.Yes, you're right. We have no idea if THAT 7' 2" GUY can guard 4-men. No idea at all.

Yeah, I started reading that, got a headache, and moved on.How about a paragraph now and then?

Man, I really wish I had the power to see into the future too.You are setting him up for failure if you play him as a 4. Most 4s in the BIG will be able to beat him off the dribble. As a 5 he will make it up with his size vs a quicker 5 in the paint.
I agreed that Manley would be a good compliment to Haarms. We may have a shot at him, although not very high. I don't believe we have much a shot at Eastern however. I would love to be wrong.
Boiled, there is room for both you and Vile to be right on this one. Haarms looks like a 4 on offense and a 5 on defense. There is no rule requiring you to guard the guy who guards you. Haarms will require a post partner who has some post skills offensively and can defend other 4's. It could work by creating nasty matchup problems for an opposing D.You should have this tattooed on your forehead, because that phrase fits you better than anyone else on here. I knew you haters were going to find some reason to not like this pickup, I guess I just didn't realize how ridiculous you would get about it.
But yes, how about we see him play his first college game before we write him off okay? I know that is a lot to ask of you, but trust me, you can do it.
This exactly.Boiled, there is room for both you and Vile to be right on this one. Haarms looks like a 4 on offense and a 5 on defense. There is no rule requiring you to guard the guy who guards you. Manley might fit perfectly if he doesn't go NC or if OSU can't make a spot for him. Combine those two with Taylor and the post is set again for a while. Combine them with Carsen, Cline and hopefully Eastern and things look good. This exactly.
