Isaac Haas will likely be the full-time starter at the 5 next season. Do you think that Painter will finally come to his senses and use some 2-3, 3-2, or 1-3-1 (will have a better personnel for 1-3-1 next year, IMO) to help him out (i.e. alleviate some of the pressure on him in certain mismatches) on defense or will IH still be forced to chase around smaller and quicker 5's (i.e. going up to defend high-ball screens, etc.) in Painter's man D?

No because the perimeter players will still either be too short (PJ and Carsen) or too slow (Dakota and Cline) to effectively play a zone.

I've never said that, so I'll take that as your genuine opinion.

He already has come to his sense by not listening to people like you that can't let something go. Jesus give it a rest and find a new hobby already. There is no reason to play zone no matter how much you want it and post about it.

How about we let this season finish before you start complaining about Painter for next season already okay? Good Lord, seriously this is just getting beyond ridiculous.

I'm off to create two new accounts so I can like this three times .... I might even create five, it's so deserving of appreciation and praise!!!!!!!!!

OH, and to Nage --- NFW ... which stands for "NO F*KING WAY"

Haas will chase smaller 5s around all year. Painter has never changed and he never will.

It's just not intelligent basketball having a 7'2 280 guy chasing around guys that are all pretty much shorter and quicker than he is. I just hold out hope that someday Painter will come to realize that. If some of you guys don't like these threads, just don't respond. You're not being forced to respond. I'm not going to stop posting about topics like these until changes are made, so some of you better get used to it.

Even funnier. "I'm not going to stop posting about topics like these until changes are made, so some of you better get used to it." Because any coach is going to listen anything on a fan board, let alone this drivel. Or you and the one or two others who agree can go post each other.

Forums are meant to have opinions posted so no reason for you to stop. But be prepared to be called out on your posts when you don't fully understand the topic you are posting about. Like in your case here and in other comments you have made such as which player should be playing over another player, only to have that proven incorrect as well.

The defense we play now is more than adequate to be successful as long as the players do their part. Without that, no defense is going to work no matter what you run. And that has been our core problem in the loses in terms of lackluster defense more than the type of defense we run.

Also we have a bigger issue with turnovers as opposed to whether we run zone or not so we should shore that up before anything else as those are basically free points for the opponent.

And lastly I stand by my original comment in that it's ridiculous to being with to call out Painter for something he did or didn't do during a season that hasn't happened yet. That tells me that Painter being successful this season like he is, really torques you off.

Then go be a fan of Syracuse where you won't be disappointed in not seeing a zone.

Most of the problems have been more so with the backside help being late in rotation than it has been with Haas being a poor defender on the wing. You are over-reacting to a very small sample size and then potentially forcing our strength in defense in to a weakness. This season in the B1G, for example, the zone you are clamoring about would have been dreadful. Most teams in the B1G would have simply shot over this zone as the weakness of a zone is allowing perimeter shots. Syracuse makes up for the glaring weakness in a zone by recruiting long and athletic players but then also alters their offensive approach geared towards those players as well. The reason for this is because Boeheim has always done that and has coached that way for nearly four decades at Syracuse.

If you were a fan at Syracuse and because they have struggled this season, would you be clamoring for Boeheim to be playing a man to man? No, because that isn't what Boeheim is skilled at coaching...so why clamor and beg for CMP to suddenly start coaching something he isn't good at doing?

Yep. The delusion is strong with him.

Can't speak for everyone but I don't mind because every time you post this it gives a bunch of people a good chance to laugh.

Now if it was in all CAPS and BOLDED, I would be swayed to get my torch and pitchfork out....

what has painter accomplished that has made everyone backing him so upset when he's being criticized? Some people want some adjustments. So what we talk about strategy on this board it should be fun but some people make it no fun by just calling people morons instead of validily backing their opinions. What the heck is wrong with talking about Haas next year? You guys drool over recruits all the time

It would be like proposing that North Korea stop allowing idiotic dictators to run their country...it isn't going to happen. Try to find actually solutions that might work instead...like switching every screen in man defense OR sagging more on the backside help against weaker outside shooters.

The arguments against a zone with this particular Purdue squad have been clearly laid out many times. Nage either doesn't understand or just refuses to accept the reality of the situation.

You must of read the post wrong he is talking about NEXT year where there will be a different squad/rotation.

While situations call for changing D...sure. (NIce to have more than 1 bullet in your gun when bear hunting.)

Still Purdue D is holding B1G teams to 69.5 and if they continue to score at a conference leading rate of 77.7 we will be fine. I worry MORE about scoring than D with Purdue. Painter always puts up nice defensive stats.....offense...well that is the difference between 1st and 4/5 for Purdue usually.

Instead of playing zone to protect Haas I'm hoping he only recruits fast guys under 6'5" from now on.

You mean when Purdue brings back a starting 4 that they had last season in PJT, Mathias, Haas, and VE and add Carsen? How does that make that much difference?
I'm not going down that rabbit hole again. But just to be clear, we will have many different combinations/lineups available to CMP:

Eastern - 6'6" Guard
Ewing - 6'8" wing
Wheeler - 6'7" wing
Haarms - 7'2" f/c
Taylor (maybe) - 6'10" f/c

All of these are pieces that we don't have this year. I doubt that CMP will play zone, but if he wanted to, this group gives us some abilities that we don't currently have.

I'm going to keep posting here until North Korea becomes a free nation. That should spark change.

Boeheim's teams played man-to-man before they started playing zone in his long tenure at Syracuse.

If you could only choose one, would you rather see Haas defending in the paint area (extended some) or defending out around the 3PT line?

Well it will make a huge difference with Swanigan gone. You can look at it as 4 starters returning but Purdues losing their best player. You can't honestly be looking at the situation as "we only lose one starter." Haas will be playing a lot more minutes. Not to mention Purdue still won't have a proven big off the bench. Yes Ewing maybe good and Taylor could get healthy but we don't know. Haas maybe the only guy that can effectively play the Center position next year because Swanigan will be gone.

Same was said when AJH graduated last year. You keep digging a hole of hyperbole and are not getting out. You see what you want to see and are blinded by your hatred of Painter. He could win the national title this year and you would still complain because he didn't win it using a zone.

And we are only talking about defense where Swanigan is arguably at his weakest. He is an elite rebounder but I would classify average, if not below average, for a defender away from the paint.
