They probably shot a few too many threes and missed too many FT's. Otherwise, they played pretty well in their first game this season against another college team. USI will probably be in the DII NCAA Tourney, so they're not as bad as say, DIII Newberry.

Players that performed below expectations: Thompson (didn't sound like he was very aggressive or looking for his open shots often), Mathias (although he was better in the 2nd half)

Players that performed at an expectation level most might expect: C. and V. Edwards (although VE probably could have been more aggressive as well, in regards to looking for his shot), Swanigan (great stat-line, Haas (unexpectedly poor on his FT's, but otherwise DOMINANT)

Players that played above expectations: Eifert and Albrecht (He still needs to make a free-throw, but Eifert made some good passes and had some nice rebounds, as well as a couple of baskets.) Spike was great! He must be close to 100%.

It will be interesting to find out how they do against West Virginia in the scrimmage. Will Albrecht and C. Edwards supplant Thompson and Mathias as the starters vs. McNeese State?

Thanks for the recap. Newberry is also D2

Oh, I could have sworn it was DIII. I do believe Southern Indiana is a more competitive program than Newberry on an annual basis. It's no problem. I'll have to watch the replay (airs at 12PM tomorrow) because like many of us, I just listened to the Purdue radio broadcast and followed the more detailed Purdue GameTracker.

Here's the recap with the box score, etc. available:

free throw shooting was horrible. need to improve on that. 3 point shooting wasnt very good either. 22 point win over this team is a little disappointing. was not there so i guess we probably played a lot of people or at least those that could

I attended the game last night. The biggest concerns, for me, were being out-rebounded, Haas missing free throws, and an overall lackadaisical playing style. Something looked...off in Isaac's shot. Biggie looks more confident and athletic. Carsen definitely doesn't look like a freshman and Spike looks like he can really contribute to this team. He stepped up when our offense was stagnant in the second half.

I guess it's not a fair judgement of the total potential of this team being that we were down 3 players last night.

I will need to watch the game today to really understand. We don't get out rebounded very often. However, both teams stunk it up from 3-point range. That usually means long rebounds, often pulled down by the smaller team that doesn't have position underneath.

Free throws will be a must for Haas, otherwise he will get the snot hacked out of him. Plenty of time to correct this.

My take and I was there last night with a sparse crowd that was nowhere near the 12k reported attendance.
Vince looked reluctant to do much although he got two quick fouls that limited his playing time in the first half. Biggie and Haas both got outrebounded by smaller guys who got way too many offensive rebounds. PJ was off his game as was Mathias. Spike looked like a real asset as did Carsen. Depth in the post looks to be a problem if Taylor cannot contribute a lot and likewise for Basil. A guy sitting next to me was bemoaning the possibility that a key injury to one of the 3 bigs would end the season before it starts. Ref job by Bo, BJ Cartstenson, and a guy fresh off the intramural courts was terrible as usual. I believe Purdue really needs a slasher type guy to take the ball to the basket as they still seem to be in the try to feed the post to AJ (now Isaac) mode while everyone else stands around the perimeter watching. Maybe Carsen can be that guy but unfortunately Isaac cannot draw his defender out to play him whereas AJ could. Wish I could be more optimistic but need to see more defense and just plain hustle to get on the train.

Both Edwards', Smotherman, and Albrecht are all players that can slash into the lane and score or get assists. Perhaps because they were having a lot of scoring success with Swanigan and Haas in their high-low action, their teammates probably weren't that assertive in regards to driving it often and moving the defense.

Watched the replay today. Not as good as hoped but not as bad as some exhibitions. Pretty ragged. Tough to assess with such a short bench. Basil and Ryan better extract their heads and be model teammates the rest of the season. Hopefully we see fewer teams of midgets yhe rest of the way. Better to bang with giants than swat gnats.

I'd have been shocked if there was a good crowd there last night with it being an exhibition game and the Cubs playing in the World series at the same time.

As a few already mentioned, I was concerned about the rebounding after seeing the box score. I somewhat focused on that while watching the replay, and saw this:

1) The defensive team is always in good position to grab rebounds off missed FTs, and Purdue missed plenty of FTs last night.
2) I saw why Painter wants to stress good positional defense. When Haas and/or Swanigan have to rotate to help stop a penetrating wing, they end up out of rebounding position if the shot goes up. Last year AJH could block the shot or force another pass which allowed him to get back into good rebounding position before the shot went up. I think this will get better as the season goes on, but it cost the team a few rebounds last night.

It also cost them a bunch of buckets inside as SIU drove baseline then dished to the big cutting into the lane from the opposite side when our big came to help. Their other field goals were mostly step back jumpers.
Need to watch again to see what they did to create the situation where we had no one able to rotate down to cover the help rotation.

I think the major factor in the flat effort could be missing three scholarships players, two of which tend to be high emotional guys (Smotherman and Cline) along with the fact it is just an exhibition game. I'll take much more from the first actual game on the 11th against McNeese State.

Also, the team Purdue played is a pretty decent DII school and could probably beat a fair amount of D1 schools. Not many D2 schools are going to roll out a 7 footer and a 6'9ish guy on their front court.

We shot almost 59% from the field. IH missed 10 FT's so 'm not sure that is accurate.
