Familiar face on the sidelines this year

Since this thread is spiraling down fast, I offer this:

For the love of God, I don't get some that want to trash him. No he wasn't the most gifted athlete but he most certainly gave his all for Purdue.

The bashing going on of him is just getting ridiculous now. Time will tell if this is a good hire or not so how about we wait and see how it pans out before automatically assuming he will suck because of how he did or didn't perform based off of your individual perception?

Look at Painter as an example, he is a damn good coach overall but wasn't the greatest player. Yeah some want him fired because of differing expectations/perceptions, but reality is he is a good coach overall because he understands the game. Who is to say DJ doesn't have the same set of qualities in him as well? How about we wait and see before making assumptions.

I get your point, but I think you are blaming the wrong person. Byrd was a decent role player and was definitely a contributor prior to his senior season, so "minimal impact" are not the words I would use. LJ and Hummel were good, but not good enough to carry the whole team by themselves. They still needed solid role players to make the tourney. DJ shot 43% from 3 his junior year and scored 9 pts. per game and was not a liability on defense from what I can recall. Painter was really to blame for forcing DJ (a solid role player) into the key player of a team due to a disjointed roster with inadequate/wrong talent. I think DJ did the best he could with what was handed to him...a mess. I do admit that watching that team was quite often rough; I just don't blame DJ.

As for least favorite Boilers of all time, I can think of a few very quickly that were much more damaging that DJ (both in the locker room and on the court). We will just have to accept disagreement here.
This. Blame CMP (and Morgue of course) for that team. DJ and Terone should never have been the best 2 players on any B1G team. They should have been 4th and 5th options on a really good team, but Painter failed to restock the cupboard.

I agree with you on Byrd but Terone Johnson was projected to be a better shooter, defender, and overall decision-maker than he ended up being (underachieved a bit relative to his #50-60 range overall composite ranking coming out of high school). Also, his Dad and one of his younger brothers seemed to have more of a negative influence on his play than positive.

Not sure there is a direct correlation between how good a player was and how well they can coach or help a program. Time will tell. He is a Purdue man and I am willing to give him a chance to prove himself.
