I get your point, but I think you are blaming the wrong person. Byrd was a decent role player and was definitely a contributor prior to his senior season, so "minimal impact" are not the words I would use. LJ and Hummel were good, but not good enough to carry the whole team by themselves. They still needed solid role players to make the tourney. DJ shot 43% from 3 his junior year and scored 9 pts. per game and was not a liability on defense from what I can recall. Painter was really to blame for forcing DJ (a solid role player) into the key player of a team due to a disjointed roster with inadequate/wrong talent. I think DJ did the best he could with what was handed to him...a mess. I do admit that watching that team was quite often rough; I just don't blame DJ.
As for least favorite Boilers of all time, I can think of a few very quickly that were much more damaging that DJ (both in the locker room and on the court). We will just have to accept disagreement here.
