The Packers signed QB/ WR Etling to their practice squad today. QB love is out with COVID protocal. it just proves once drafted into the NFl, much like baseball managers, good or bad, somebody will always have a job for you. It probably won't last very long, but hey, it's nice to be wanted, and as musicians would say ... it's a gig.

I don't really expect Etling to remain a Packer very long. as the article points out, Love is out for COVID, and rodgers isn't really practicing because of his toe. So they needed somebody to throw the ball for their practices.

This made me think of AOC. I believe most of us would agree if AOC decided to turn pro this year, it's doubtful he'd be a top round draft pick, but he probably would be a late round pick. And once drafted, he'd probably make an NFL roster and stay in the NFl for a while which would be awesome for a guy that walked onto Purdue.

He’s gonna start

Etling definitely had talent as did Sindelar and Blough. if only they had better coaching to develop their skills when they first arrived.
Sindelar had a chance to come back and show he can stay healthy and be a strong pocket qb. He opted to retire. I think it had more to do with his health then Developing his skills. Blough did alright at Purdue and I think he’s having himself a nice nfl career for a 3 star QB.

Do you know something AO does not (or the scouts talking to him)? If what you say was true i would expect he would not even be considering coming back. He still has some work to do to prove his success is sustainable. He had a magic ride at the end but he really struggled against good defenses in some games (wisconsin, ND, minny).

Yep, Sindelar has a successful career as an engineer and, based on news accounts, seems happy. I forgot how frequently he was injured and am glad to see that he has succeeded in life as a *student* athlete.

I know something most do not. I read a lot . it has been said by many NFL scouts that this year is a rather thin year for drafting QBs. not the quality, but rather the quanity. Each year, the majority of NFL teams will spend a draft pick on a QB. and once drafted, that QB usually makes the team for at least 1-2 years.. So to fill that draft day need, there would have to be 20-30 Qbs drafted in those 7 rounds. the word among scouts is that there is a shortage of quality Qbs this year with less than 20 QBs worth drafting. So if AOC entered the draft, he'd probably be drafted and make a team. And the rest would be up to him. Next year's QB crop seems to be a bit larger and better..

the biggest question is if he came back for another year, how high would his stock rise? if he entered the draft this year, i could see him being a 6th or 7th round pick, maybe a low 5th round pick. if he came back for another year, how high would his stock rise?

the only thing i really know is this year's amount of QBs is rather low, and if AOC wanted to play in the NFL, he would be very close to being guaranteed he'd be drafted.

You better do more reading. Last year there were 9 QBs drafted I believe (not 20-30) and only 1 in rounds 5-7 (Sam Ehlinger of the Colts). In 2020 the 6 QBs drafted in rounds 5-7 none made nfl rosters this year (practice squad doesn’t count (thats $9200 a week) other than 1-2 emergency spots for a week or two. He might get drafted this year I don’t disagree with you on that part but he bette those he is one of the same ehlingers out there and not one of the six from last year who didn’t make it. The goal for sustainability in the nfl for a qb should be first three rounds, not 5-7. I think if he comes back and fine tunes his skills and showcase he can be a drop back passer for a full season in the big ten that will improve his chances of being drafted in the first three rounds.

Bigs isn't a bad guy, it's just that he "knows" so many things that just aren't so.

I wasn't aware that was a point of contention...!
Basically the point of my post was he has a good chance of either getting drafted or making a practice squad which will pay him very nice money. Or he could come back to Purdue and hope his draft stock rises. But how much higher is his stock really going to rise if he waits another year? If I were him, I’d take the money. Once in the nfl, like Etling, there is always some team looking for a practice squad player. And who knows, he may even become active and make the minimum salary.

so what’s the real benefit of returning other than making posters here happy? I highly doubt a National championship is in our future next year. Maybe the Outback Bowl!

I think where you had a major "miss" was your comments about QBs in the draft.

That is the missing context, which you failed to reconcile.

The debate wasn't about making money on the practice squad, the point of contention was your (apparently) incorrect assertion about QBs being drafted.

Making the PS as a late round pick gets you almost no guaranteed money and your ceiling is you play on the practice squad all year making $162,000. Ian Book was a 4th round pick and got $673k guaranteed and a 4 year $4.2m contract. He may end up on the practice squad next year as he’s 4th on the depth chart And his contract is not guaranteed but being a 4th round pick got him set. AO doesn’t have to elevate to first round pick to make one more year worth it. He may get more than $162k on NIL if he stays!
