After the ND comeback and the Iowa game, just a few days ago there were two posts on this board comparing this year's team to the great Hummel teams and another one saying that this year's team was clearly better, no doubt about it than last year's team.
TC4three came on here and told both posts and the majority of the board that people were overreacting because Purdue was pounding weak teams at home, including a very young Iowa team. TC4three kept saying that we had to wait until the Big Ten season played out a little bit to truly judge, and that we were gonna miss defensive players like R. Davis and AJ (Would Mason have done that to R. Davis like he did to Purdue tonight?). The overwhelming majority of the posters pretty much laughed at TC (showing, I think, a lack of history and understanding of how tough the Big Ten is). The majority also talked about how Purdue was better off without Davis because he was an offensive liability last year. (Did Mason get 30 or only 28 or so tonight without that Big Ten defensive player of the year on Purdue now?).
I supported TC and agreed that how good this year's team is still up in the air. I even said that I thought Purdue would lose 5 or 6 games this year in the Big Ten. This got me some distain and a LMAO from Pistolpt. Being an adult male who communicates with words, I had to ask my 15 year-old daughter what LMAO means. . . . Well, after tonight, this is my big "I told you so, LMAO" thread to Pistol and the others who dismissed TC and us more experienced Big Ten watchers.
With that said, now don't overreact the other way after this game. It was just one game. It's a long, long season with a ton of ebb and flow. IU beats NC and Kansas and loses at home to Nebraska. We kill Iowa and lose to Minny. Seasons are filled with good games and bad games. Yes, we were flat and bad at times tonight. Next week or in a month we might just as well go on the road and play and shoot out of our asses like Minny did tonight. Of course, the goal is to be consistent and always play well, but that doesn't happen with teams, any team, NBA teams, but especially with 20 year olds playing.
This year's team's might still end up clearly better than last year's team, don't judge on one game or two. It might end up maybe a little worse. Give it some time to jell now that it's in the conference and every game is tough and physical. Carson E. is kind of a personification for what I mean: he's not gonna play like he did against Iowa too often, and he won't play as bad as he did tonight. Carsen and the team will settle out and be somewhere in the middle.
But don't give up on them either. I still think this team can be a Final Four contender if we patch up some holes and our outside shooters get and stay hot.
