Does this help or hurt with eastern and Tillman?

He doesn't need to get another class like that. If he gets 1 or 2 top 75 players a year and another 1-2 top 150 guys, that will translate to continued success. The problem when you have a class like the baby boilers, it makes recruiting behind them difficult, which is why he stuffled recruiting after them. He didn't have minutes to give. Small classes are fine, but he needs to land some top 100 talent. Eastern, Epperson, and Tillman are the only realistic top 100 options left. There is unfortunately a chance he misses on all three. It shouldn't be panic mode and then settle for 3-5 unrated or top 250 type guys. If it comes to that, find a roll player or two that does one thing in particular really well and hope to develop the rest of their game. Then go hard at it the 2018 class. I really hope we get Eastern. Epperson or Tillman would be nice, but my first choice would be Eastern. We have to get more athletic.
Continued success? As in choking away 3 ncaa tournament games in a row? Or the last place finish 3 yeats ago? Ya this class is definitely a disappointment. Is it any wonder msu has had far more success then painter and purdue? No its not, theyre stealing all our first choice players and painter had to settle for scraps. So i guess you can keep being happy with those recruits barely in the top100, 3rd place big ten finishes and early bow outs in the tourney.

Two years in a row Purdue got underseeded and put against a tough matchup. ALR was a press team that hit some ridiculous shots in the end to steal a win. Cincy was a really good athletic team as well. The biggest problem was guard play. So what does Painter do? Goes out and signs a lightning quick guard in Edwards and picks up Spike is a crafty veteran. If he gets bounced out early this year you can complain, but Izzo also had an early exit. It happens. Look at Villanova. You only need to break through one time. Painter isn't my first choice. I would rather the Cal or Dayton coach, but he is doing enough to keep Purdue relevant. You don't fire him unless you have the guy you want lined up. Purdue isn't a dream destination for coaches. A deep run and Biggie getting drafted in round one are extremely important. Purdue has a team set up to do big things. If he completely strikes out recruiting and then drops an 0fer in the tournament, your gripe is understandable. Purdue has a chance to finish in the top 10 and compete for a B1G championship. The season hasn't started so all we have to judge him on is expectations, and right now they are huge. I am very happy with the current team, and even more excited for this years team than last years team. If Painter can get kids drafted in the first round and starting on NBA teams coupled with a few deep runs, the recruiting will improve. It's the natural way of things. Unless you are a top 5-10 recruiter, your luck with recruits will ebb and flow with availability of playing time. Painter is not a top 5-10 recruiter. Take a step back from the ledge, we still have 50+ games and at your current anxiety level, you aren't going to make it.

Stopped reading after your first sentence. Your premise we were under seeded is laughable. We lost to freakin arkansas little rock who got bounced the next round. If anything we were over seeded.

A huge part of a coaches job is recruiting. If he's not a top 5-10 recruiter, he needs to find a way to get there.
Is that better assistants?
Not sure, because I doubt he's going to change his personal approach too much after being a HC for 17 yrs.

Painter needs to change his approach and come in after izzo. Granted izzo is pulling these recruits from more schools than just us, it sure seems like he is focusing on people Painter is after more than not.
Did we see this before fife arrived?

Until Jackson committed to msu i really wasn't too worried but its looking more and more like this class will end up with mostly project players and we'll be

Ya this class a been a major disappointment. Was hoping to nab a top 50 player. How was painter ever able to land the baby boilers? Hasnt even come close to landing a class that good since.

IU was still in recovery mode, and Cuonzo Martin was still on the staff. That's how Painter landed the Baby Boilers.

Iu is always in recovery mode with clappy the clown as headcoach so your argument holds no water.

Seriously, how dumb are you? Hopefully nobody really knows that you're a Purdue fan, because that would be a poor representation of the level of intelligence typically associated with Purdue alums.

Whether you like it or not, Crean can recruit.

It feels more and more like MSU is going to get Eastern and Tillman. With the recruiting class that MSU had last year, this is kind of surprising. It feels like both will get buried in the roster and fight for minutes. Tillman would come right into big minutes with the inevitable departure of Biggie, and Eastern would get immediate minutes as a big athletic guard. It can't be just minutes that is the appeal. They just want to play for Izzo, the hall of fame coach. MSU will likely end with Purdue's dream class. It is a tough pill to swallow. That hall of fame induction could not have come at a worse time. I am still optimistic because of the current team that Purdue has. A deep run, a big 10 championship, and a player drafted in the first round will go a long way for future recrruigin. Not to mention a ton of minutes will be opening up. I once really looked forward to recruiting season. Now I can't wait for it to be over and the actual season to start. The potential and expectations are really high. Maybe we can still land a decent player or two and a development project. That is about the best to hope for at his point.

How many of this "historically great" Indiana HS class has he nabbed?

The day before JJJ committed to MSU, many if not most recruiting experts thought "more and more it's beginning to really look like JJJ is going to pick Purdue." 9/30 is a long time from now. I suspect even Tillman isn't 100% sure where he's going. You shouldn't be either.

I think JJJ would have been ours if Izzo had not shown up after the HOF, and cried at JJJ. Hard to resist that sales pitch. We get JJJ and maybe the other dominos flow toward us. I think it was that close.

I would rather see Painter sign a bunch of grad transfers than low-ranked "developmental projects". His track record is spotty at best with those. Then try again in 2018, with players Izzo isn't recruiting.

He doesn't have to. He has shown he can recruit well in areas outside of Indiana and the Midwest, at a fairly high volume. mainly because of IU's brand, who knows?

Outside of Haas and Vince Edwards, Painter's highest rated recruits (E'Twaun, JaJuan, Hummel, Martin, Terone, Ronnie, Rapheal, Biggie) are all from Indiana or the Midwest.

Look at some recent IU classes:

2016
Curtis Jones (VA), De'Ron Davis (CO)

2015
Thomas Bryant (NY)

2014
Robert Johnson (VA)

2013
Noah Vonleh (MA)
Troy Williams (VA)
Stanford Robinson (VA)

According to Tillman's mom, Painter and Brantley flew in last night to make a final sales pitch.

God you're a moron, my point about you and crean still stands. Seriously, go back to peegs already with the rest of the idiots.

It Almost seems that Izzo targets kids that Painter wants. Both schools seem to compete for the same kids. Odd that IU isn't in the same mix.
I think Purdue and MSU are much closer to playing style than either is to IU. I think both have a little more discipline to their offense, a little more emphasis on D and definitely more physical play..particularly on the boards.
