.. To go in front of Mitch and the BOT and say, "yeah, I know I said hazell was the real deal and we needed to offer him a 12 million dollar deal, but yeah, he's not good. At all. So, anyway, we're going to have to pay him $8 million whether he coaches or not, but he's really pretty bad so I think he should go..."

Does it matter? Because I'm sure Mitch won't throw that money away unless someone donates the cash. And the McDonalds CEO just got fired.

No, he doesn't. Here is the problem.... Our Board, our president, our athletic director... I don't know how to tell you this, but at our school, those things do not matter. They do not care about championships. If we win, hey it is neat and we wear black and gold, and golly look at those boys play. If they lose, well golly they tried. We have an Ivy League mindset to athletics. Starts at the top.

The flip side of this, it could be argued that incredibly irresponsible spending in the short run. Buying out 1/2 a contract for $6M is a pretty big deal. I know because of how much money the athletic department charges for tickets, concessions, merchandise, etc. that it's easy to say "just buy him out, we'll make it up on the back-end with better results on the new guy". Most people (myself included) think it would be pretty hard for things to be any worse, but, almost everyone thought the same thing about DH1 and that spending more money would guarantee a better scenario... it doesn't always work.

I'm not sure if Hazell will ever get it done at Purdue, but there's no guarantee cutting bait with him for $6M and getting a new guy is going to bring about better on-field results AND better financial results for the athletic department. You really need to be confident that you have both of those in hand before you think about sending some guy packing with a truckload of cash. What happens if you replace him with a guy who gets only marginally better on-field results the next 3 years... fire him too halfway through his contract? I think it's also important to note that if you fire a coach after 3 years, you're really going to have to pony-up for the next one because I'd have to think the candidate pool is going to be a little thinner than the last time... I mean, 3 years is a short tenure even by IU football standards.

I know people hate to hear this, but Purdue has made its own bed, and sometimes when you do that you have to sleep in it. Money only solves all your problems for the richest of the rich... and I'm not sure this athletic department is one of those institutions.

I'm guessing it's not a question of balls. They made him a VP so he's pretty secure until he's ready to go and I don't see him as the kind of guy that's ever going to admit he made a bad hire.
