There must be something wrong with me, I am really starting to like this guy and pretty much hope he does all our games. He praises our players, coaches, fans, atmosphere, just about everything. Who doesn't like to be stroked! I'm waiting for him to turn around and look at our alumni and say these are some damned attractive SOBs. His game time analysis is pretty good. Talking Biggee's post moves, why IU wouldn't work the ball into Bryant more, why would you not press us if you could, Dakota's smarts, Blackmons horrible defensive positioning, etc.

I get the sense that this year's Purdue team plays the way Dakitch thinks the game should be played. Purdue shares the ball, takes good shots, rebounds well (most of the time), plays effective defense (most of the time). Dakitch seems to have a soft spot for guys like PJ Thompson and Vince Edwards, guys he calls unselfish.

He's also been very critical of Indiana, and I think it's because they don't play the way he thinks the game should be played. Indiana has great individual talent, but they're sloppy and (at least in his estimation) selfish.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you. Even if he weren't so complimentary of the program, I appreciate Dakich's approach as commentator -- that of a coach who, regardless of what he or anyone thinks of RMK, learned the game under one of the best to ever coach. His technical knowledge of the game is invaluable and a rare commodity at ESPN given the Clown Duke of Hoops Vitale, self-appointed God's Gift to NCAA basketball Jay Bilas, and Jim "What the F Did He Say?" Calhoun. It's refreshing to get technical analysis and be entertained simultaneously.

As rgarlitz alluded to, it is gravy that Dakich likes the way Purdue plays basketball, likes Painter and the kids, and isn't shy about expressing it.

He gets a little in the weeds sometimes, but I will take him over a clueless rambler any day.

I have come to appreciate Dakich's announcing more each season....I think he is better with Flemming/Shulman/O'Brien than he was with Tirico.

Also, If you go back to the early early first days when Vitale did games for ESPN (I think he used to do some of the Big Monday games with Mike Patrick), Vitale had some of this demeanor....and it was informative and entertaining, IMO......then he gradually morphed into Dukie V., a mere "shell" of his former announcing self.

I've come to like him better. I know some of his praise of PU is to tweak IU but I'm okay with that. He gets carried away but I'll take him over V or Calhoun any day.

I think he likes CMP and he really likes the Paint Crew after they "stood" up for him against MSU.

I like to be stroked.

Like I said in another thread, I prefer Dakich over just about any other announcer. He's funny, his voice is lively and interesting, he's knowledgeable and he likes our squad. I give him a 10/10.

Well, IU ran a diamond and 1 press for one possession and then went to a man and tried to double on that...

This year is pretty close to the way Knight's teams played at IU when Dakich played. He coached pretty much the same way at BG and has always stressed defense.

I remember back when AJ Hammons was a freshman on a struggling Purdue team but scored 30 against Indiana in Bloomington. Dakitch's comment that night was something to the effect of "someone has to score on a bad team."

I do think that Dakitch's estimation of Matt Painter has improved in recent years years. Dakitch now seems to have a genuine respect for Painter. Part of that might be that Painter is a regular on his radio show. Maybe those guys have gotten to know each other through that show.

His 30 points were in the 97-60 home loss to IU, not on the road.

I would like Gus Johnson to CC some of our games.

It might happen if he's on the call for any of the NCAA Tourney games on TBS, TNT, or TruTV. He left (or got fired, who knows) BTN about 4 or 5 years ago. I've seen him and Jimmy Jackson (think he left BTN shortly after his son Traevon graduated from Wisconsin) on games broadcast on FS1 (Fox Sports 1) this season.

Said nobody ever?

Gus Johnson is CLUELESS. He just yells to make it sound interesting. The smartest thing the soccer community has ever done was rise up and complain about him calling World Cup matches and Fox promptly scrapped him from the line up.

That being said, he's probably really annoying to other fans cause he knows Purdue so well and praises them so much. If he was doing that with another team that we were playing, it'd probably get old...

You say that like it's a bad thing, haha. I know Gus won't ever be mistaken for William F. Buckley, but he can up with some colorful gems.

I swear he sits there with a piece of paper that has 20 prepared, canned lines that he uses. The worst is when he calls a football game that's not remotely close and he tries to make it sound like the team down by 28 kicking a field goal is game-changing.

Like, "I was born at night, but not last night!" I've heard that one several times.

I think Gus Johnson needs to go into a hibernation chamber which is only allowed to be opened for March Madness. It's one thing to get excited during those games. Ibodel's right: Nobody should be yelling something like "DON'T GO AWAY NOW, UCLA IS MAKING THIS A BALL GAME, NOW DOWN 31-3!"

He has a wealth of knowledge not only as a player but as a coach. He is the best doing Big Ten games because he knows the rivalries and the history with the teams.

Can he be an antagonist? Sure, but he is also an on-air personality so the more listeners the more revenue his show generates. He also plays on the Purdue faithfuls emotions especially when it comes to Indiana's tourney success compared to Purdue.

I mean, I'm not a soccer fan, but you can tell when announcers have no idea what they are talking about and it's brutal regardless.

Not me, I like Bardo. It isn't that I don't like Dakitch, but Bardo isn't trying to be the focus, he is just calling the game.
Bardo is so thin skinned, chirp at the guy once for being awful and blocks you on Twitter

Really! You ever hear how Dalich treats callers to his radio show? Argue with Dan and he hangs up. What's the difference?

Yeah, Dakich has no one arguing with him, he just talks and talks and talks. Again, I'll take Dakich over a Dick Vitale or Gus Johnson, but he can be a bit much.

It's funny I was just thinking this the other day as well.

Also, watching the game replays in 60 on BTN are hilarious when Dakich's conversation cuts in and out at random with the game.
