Colvin and Hiede

Those two high flying blocks by Heide and Colvin were ridiculous!

Heide just about hitting his head on the rim, and Colvin actually jumped early but then seemed to levitate for the swat......crazy good stuff to watch.

Heide can jump and makes up for a 7 footer…he practically was touching a 12 foot rim on that block vs ole Miss!

In all seriousness, yes, paint has to feel kinda weird/anxious, but if we can rebound and play defense, we still make the 7 footer(s) on the other side have to guard our smaller, quicker and more athletic players. Just depends on who can execute their game plan better.
IMO MP wanting to play a big this season had as much to do with trying to protect TKR (foul trouble, exerting energy guarding the post), as anything. With DJ out it became obvious that in most cases the trade off wasn’t worth it.

We’ve seen Trey get in minor foul trouble a few time and it’s less than ideal. It will be interesting to see how Paint handles against teams with significant size. We’ll get a glimpse against Maryland.

Is DJ going to be a guy that is perpetually injured?? Seemed to have a break awfully easily with minimal contact.

Hope the nutrition experts are working with him on diets that not only gain weight strength and muscle, but also most importantly increase bone strength.
Growing to 7'3" in 19 years means your bones have grown WAY more than most people in a given time span, so yes, more likely to break I think.
I'll always wonder if the break was point of stresses and weakened or just a fluke.
Forced rest NOW probably isn't a bad thing for his future health.

Exactly. Jacobsen may very well start next season but he’ll likely have to be damn good to move one of the current starters to a 6th man role.
For sure. But it also changes the team greatly, going from small to very big. Can you imagine Trey in another season of progression going against 4's?? With him posting against 4's and DJ pulling the center out of the paint and 3 drop dead shooters around them?? Give me, give me that possibly dominating team size and makeup. either Cam or Myles would be fire off the bench. or pretty ok with Daniel being the X factor off the bench as needed.

Blowing my own mind: Is it REALLY possible that TEN GAMES after Zach is 2 time POY and we are in the national title game, that we are looking at potentially the best Boiler team of my lifetime NEXT season????????????

I think he’s at more of an advantage vs 5s. Quicker and great footwork. Teams are going to start throwing everything at him, double teams, taller players, shorter players, different looks and he’s ready for it. He’s been going vs the NPOTYx2 for 3 years and was busting his ass in practice every day (according to smith, Loyer and paint). You could see how good Trey could be during the scrimmage last year, bur he just wasn’t the focal point of the offense.

Really glad everyone gets to see how great he is and can be. If he could hit his FTs at a higher %, he’d average even more points. Hope that improves and hope he keeps rebounding. Him and Braden are unstoppable in the PnR and TKR is so far, our second best playmaker.

Completely agree. DJ has a lot of work to do in rehab and on his body in general but if he can rebound and block shots at an elite level he significantly raises the ceiling of next year's team, whether starting or coming off the bench.

DJ being a shot blocker defensive threat cloggs up the lane in itself is needed and the rest let's say 10 pts and 10 extra Rebounds changes us dramatically given everyone else doing there thing , I vote we play 6 players next year ...vs everyone else's 5. 🤣

Has anybody heard an update from CMP? We are probably at least 2 months away still, but I think it's feasible to believe that he could return this year.
I'm not saying that's not possible but it would be a big ask for a kid who needed physical development and experience to jump right in in the middle of the Big Ten season. If he can do it, awesome, but I'm assuming he's out for the year and will focus on getting bigger and stronger for next season.

That's all that I was commenting on. I'm definitely not advocating for him to return this season, just saying that we may discover that it is a possibility and then we'll see what the decision is. I'm of the opinion that he likely won't be at Purdue for 4 yrs after this one, so if he was given the "ok" to play, I wouldn't completely write off the possibility of him coming back this season.

Yeah his D has come into a valuable contribution where before it was non existent it seemed. I saw moments of I've yesterday. His alertness to anticipate Bradens shot missing and race to the basket versus watching the shot was something you just can't teach ...instinct.
Myles has improved a lot and Purdue needed him to do it. Relative to the rebound and basket made. That was great, but I do think anyone that has played a bit should know to hit the boards under that condition. Listen here starting say 2.50 in the movie where there are 15 seconds left. You are going to hear Matt say "NO SAFETY" (meaning all hit the boards). Matt will also say ONE shot and just enough time for a tip in. Then you will hear PJ state that he wants Braden to have the whole side for his pullup (taking away the help) and will have Fletcher back if open. Player on Fletcher #5??? heads to the board when Braden shoots, but a bit too late. Not sure and would need to watch the game to see if Trey screened for Braden or just stayed out of the way...which I would expect (no help from Trey's man). Still as expected PJ took his main three and put the athletes on weakside (board side generally). Still, give Myles credit for being quick to the ball and to get it up in a hurry. Just a smidgeon less fade by Braden and it looks like it is going in.

TJ just felt like Colvin is the only one who got the message as I saw no one else crashing the boards, maybe I missed someone though.I see Heide coming in uncontested a couple steps behind , man that was a tough shot Colvin put in. Glad Colvin moved while ball was in the air.

If you rewatch the play, Heide is right there and might get the rebound if Colvin is not there. TKR is being double teamed on the box out, which is what leaves the lane open (Pedulla was the only one in the proximity to rebound it). And Loyer backfilled Braden's spot outside the 3P line in case Braden got cut off or they did a hard double.

I would need to actually watch the end of the game. In the movie above it appears Cam and Myles are both close together, but we really need to see the whole court. I may do that. I like hearing the coaches state what they want and knowing why they want what they do. I may see if I can find a video earlier in that last possession since I would like to see the alignment as well.

Thank you I wouldn't have typed below your post had I not been typing and read what you posted instead. Yes, Trey slipped and is open or pulls potential double on Braden away. Fletch is behind as you state. Actually, Cam is in the better rebounding position, but the shot nicks the rim and bounces Myles way and the rest is history!

I suspect Matt will just see which side forces the adjustment. Caleb is doing much better this year...especially hitting hit FTs. He has to quit leading with the ball on some dunks in traffic. I'm more intrigued with Berg's minutes. He went from playing to zilch...zero minutes...nada. Does Matt think he can do more and just sending a signal or is there someway Berg could get this year back if desired (which I don't know?). Also who knows the improvement we will see in conditioning with Burgess or is part of that hyperventilating as stated by @Schmedly_Whiplash suggested?

If Braden doesn’t nick the rim, ole miss gets that board but it throws the ole miss player off just enough and Myles is able to do his thing…just like Braden planned 😂

certainly the ole miss player was not ready for a short shot that went somewhat down. Cam was in the best position where he could head for the basket and tip with either hand depending on the bounce off the rim. Still, no matter what...Myles ended up making the play and the good guys survived

Completely agree regarding Berg. I believe that part of his lack of pt the last two games was matchup driven. It will be interesting to see if he logs real minutes the next four games.

Agreed. Penn state has a 7 footer who is athletic so wonder if he has Berg try and go out there to counter that…not sure how well it will work but just big body vs big body. Maryland starts two 6’10 post guys that can shoot outside but not ideal. So he may get some mins here…

TAMU is smaller and doesn’t have (to my knowledge) a typical center in the middle so not sure he’d get run here.

Auburn has the best player in the country in broome. Not sure if he will get any mins here but maybe just to give a diff look/use up fouls?

check at 1:47. Here you will see a little thing Braden does to try to gain an advantage on the D. He brings his right hand towards the ball as though he is going to get ready to shoot and that freeze on the D has him blowing past the defender. Course if he was going to shoot you would want the left hand to take the ball to the pocket rather than the right hand going towards the ball.

Smith, Loyer, Colvin, Heide and TKR.

35mpg.

And someone needs to tell Harris to quit shooting 3s. Dude is at 15% right now. I think Dwight Howard could do that.

Purdue just isn't very deep this year but that starting lineup is very good. Painter played 8 last game. Harris played 15 minutes(should have probably been 5 with the extra 10 going to Colvin). First played 11 and Cox played 5. I'm sure Painter will have Harris and Cox playing better as the season goes on but seems clear the rotation is set. Smart move to get Berg out of the rotation.

Can’t tell Harris to stop shooting. Then we run into an Ethan Morton situation where he gets the yips/loses confidence. He was a decent shooter in HS and if he’s open, he should shoot it.

I'd say he's already well past having the "yips." At this point, him shooting a 3 is practically a turnover with Purdue not being a great offensive rebounding team.

I think it is feasible but why burn a year of eligibility for a couple of games? Use the injury to get stronger and refine your skillset then he can submit for a medical redshirt if necessary.

But to answer the question, I have not heard him say anything specifically about his recovery status.

I am not a basketball expert so no idea if his mechanics are just off or if he just needs to see the ball go into the hoop to get some confidence.

I think he will be better served breaking down defenders and trying to get into the paint for a bucket close to the rim. If defenders are going to sag off because he isn't hitting, he has to find a way to create.

I think Reese for Maryland has taken one career three-pointer and the freshman Queen has a reputation for being able to shoot it but looks like is 0 for 9 on the year from deep (so of course he'll go 4 of 5 vs Purdue). If Berg doesn't play real minutes against those two I'm not sure where he'll get pt this season.

They tweaked some of the criteria/rules a couple of years ago, but IIRC, Purdue would still be the applicant for the medical hardship waiver. I think there also becomes an issue if an athlete is medically cleared to play but then does not compete for any further games during the season in question.

Both Heide and Colvin were crashing the boards for the tip in. Well designed play by the coaches. Poorly defended by OM as you leave a 5'11 guy under the bucket to go against two athletes. Some other OM players might have been caught ball watching.

He was 3-9 in the first 3 games. Didn't shoot against Bama and is 0-10 since. Maybe wide open in rhythm but he clanked one against Ole Miss like that. Mechanics didn't look off. Some guys just aren't good as the line starts moving back.
