Depth of Talent on this Team...

Ah ah sorry. You had a typo and I couldn’t fully understand but do now. You’re saying they can’t take their guy 1/1. Gotcha. Yeah agreed. I’ll finally cave and say I agree there. Still not sure if they’ve been told not to and that’s why they don’t look/even try or if it’s they really can’t.

Paint in an interview last year— in the middle of the year, said Myles could get to his spot and get any shot he wanted. We saw some flashes of that but this year it seems he’s been shut off and it’s messing with his head. But we do also know paint likes to have his best scorers shoot the ball the most (not a bad strategy) but that can come back to bite you sometimes in situations like this.
Yeh, sometimes my brain works faster than my fingers and results in a typo that essentially is the opposite of what I was intending to say. Good catch.

I think that players get in slumps for two reasons. Sometimes they develop a mechanical issue that needs to be corrected, but typically, I believe, the real issue is self doubt. It’s about trying not to miss rather than just completely trusting your mechanics. Not sure that there are easy answers, but I have seen a lot of players come out of slumps on the other side and I am hopeful that these two will be able to emerge from their’s in the not to distant future. They are both talented and I haven’t written either of them off.
Anyone who plays golf know what it's like to get a case of the yips. You start overthinking every shot instead of just letting it fly. But, it only take one good pure swing and ball flight to get it back.

I think PJ should run something at the rim for both these guys early so they can see the ball go through the basket as opposed to launching the first 3 look they get coming in cold.

Beginning the season...it appeared that Purdue'e roster was loaded with talent. Well...that has not played out as the season progressed. Tonight's game against Michigan was not the first time this season when it appeared Purdue was playing 3 or 4 on 5 with the only reliable, consistent players being Kaufman-Renn, Smith and Loyer with occasional contributions from Cox. Furst, Colvin, and Heidi do not show up most of the time. Zero, Zilch, Null from the bench tonight...and I believe it's not the first time that has happened this season. So...what appeared to be a promising future for Purdue basketball is rather murky, now. Thoughts?
I don't think you can handle losing, you over react, get your gun out and start shooting holes in everything you see. Purdue is 19-6, has played a top 5 schedule in the country, you can not do that without not having TALENT, PERIOD! I think almost every player on this roster has improved, especially on the defensive end, but most fans have blinders on and only see the offensive side of stats, they down play the defensive side of the game. Furst has been amazing, really proud of his play, him and Cox are the main reasons why are defense has blossomed the last 12 games. Cox is going to be special, I would like coach to give more of a green light, he is a really good all rounded player. Harris is going to be very special, him and Cox have talent. Burgess, for a freshman probably should have red shirted if not for Jackobsen injury, but he has a lot of skill. Purdue will be a TOP 5 team next year because of their overall talent! Purdue will not win the BT every year, but they still might win this year.

Understand this. In the 14 Big Ten games, Furst leads the entire team in shooting percentage from the floor (.651). In his 12 Big Ten starts, Furst has led the entire team in plus-minus-points four times (Northwestern plus-22, Rutgers plus-26, Oregon plus-9, USC plus-26). At Michigan, he was one of only three on the plus side in a game Purdue led for 35 minutes. It’s beyond opinion Purdue is better with him on the floor. It’s 10-2 in his starts, 9-4 otherwise. And if he got the calls every time he gets fouled, he’d be on the line more than Hunter Biden.
You don’t have to convince me. I’m a Furst defender!

Not sure that has anything to do with anything. He's played in like, over 50 games, some of them high pressure on the biggest stage. He's not lacking in experience.
Did you ever play any type of contact sport with 23 year olds when you were 18-19 years old? Unless you were a LeBron level freak of nature, you were at a decided disadvantage.

My prediction: we won’t even recognize a 22 year old Myles Colvin.

And Edey is 7'4 too. Not all players under Painter have proven to be what he signed them for.

I think Heide might get better and I hope Colvin does as well. Those two turnovers took momentum away last night, while his 5 boards were certainly welcome. But his shot has struggled all year if you look at percentages even when wide open. And yes, I know others had turnovers too.

Last night Michigan was the better team. They took Smith out of his game, they hammered Furst down low, and we had no one step up off the bench. I know CMP has his system, but at this time getting closer to tourney time, I would like to see Waddell and Berg in the game more. Honestly, they might provide that spark that is needed. Or not.

You're not a great team when Colvin and Heide are the best you have off the bench.

I don't normally question refs either, but the guy's last night missed, or simply didn't call a lot of fouls. Furst was hammered down low on his shots, Smith was played very aggressively, Cox and TKR were pushed and shoved, but then a team should never let themselves get into a position where a ref's call/no call can beat you.
Why don’t you mention how bad Harris was? He was worse than both Heide and Colvin. Myles was second leading rebounder and yet you always find a way to say he was bad. Yeah he had two turnovers and there were a few box outs he missed that led to second chance points. But he was easily the best of himself, Heide and Harris. Harris had a bad foul 75 ft away from the basket and Heide was just…that may have been one of his worst games.

And Michigan was absolutely not the best team last night. We led for 35 mins and were up double digits 3 different times. We got to any spot we wanted. Just missed shots and then the FT disparity was horrendous but that’s another discussion.

Colvin and Heide aren’t the scorers for this team off the bench. Gicarri has been providing that and CJ has helped while he has started. I don’t get why you can’t grasp that Heide and Colvin are there for defense and rebounding at this point. Any extra offense is a huge plus, but that’s not their role.

Funny thing, there are heaps of players in the MVC and MAC that have the size/build of Heide and Colvin, that can dribble-drive to the basket. I wonder.......

What was the reason that Purdue didn’t try to get Johnell Davis out of high school he would help this team also Murphy of EC is breaking Moores scoring record but Purdue is not interested in him either

Has anyone heard anything re: recruitment of true 3s and 4s (or just wings in general) currently or in the near future?

Confidence - yes.....and self-belief reinforcement can go a long way.

On the lighter side - "Here's Lenny now Jim.....just needs this short one to take all the skins......Oh dear!"

"I think his grips were slick, Joe."

This is why I believe the 26' recruiting class is so critical to our continued success. Obviously, we're going to be one of the top teams next year, but after Smith, Loyer and TKR graduate, we'll start a rebuild. How significant the drop off depends on the quality of that class. We have some nice pieces (Cox, Gicarri, Jacobsen) but we will need some studs in that class to remain a top 20 program. I'm talking about freshmen capable of starting in the B1G (like Smith and Loyer). Kinney and/or Reynolds fit that mold. Here's hoping.
I expect Burgess to become a really good player and Jack will add shooting and passing, but can’t speak to his D

We're basically in a "rebuilding" year and a top 10 team at the top of the conference when it wasn't expected. Things are not nearly as bad as you are making them out to be, step away from the ledge.
Sometimes society is better served by letting the ledge win.

Don’t believe Johnnell Davis was up to par grades wise…kinda also why he didn’t go to Michigan with Dusty.

murky???? We are playing for a 3 Pete still
And a 2 seed in the NCAAT during an expected “down year” lmao. Purdue basketball is in a great spot if you think things are now “murky”

How many ppl knew smith would be a “stud” or Loyer able to hit huge shots? Or TKR after his Frosh and soph seasons? Or that edey would be who he became?

Trust in Painter to find those guys. Not quite sure what else he needs to do to prove that to you 😂
