Colvin and Hiede

heide is not a 4, and TKR is not a 5. Unfortunately, Furst, berg and Burgess did not step up to replace Jacobson. Playing small ball may work against some teams, but not in the physical Big 10.

you may scream all you want about how bad the refs in the BIG 10 are. But the facts are they haven't changed how they call a game in the last 10 years. And by now, Purdue fans should realize this. Painter should also know by now how the refs are going to call the game, and plan accordingly.

The biggest problem with having Heide and Colvin in the starting lineup, is Braden has no help at bringing the ball up, Lance last year filled that role perfectly. If Purdue is going to go small, they need to pick up the pace. TKR, Heide and Colvin had a total of 6 rebounds(won't do it). TKR and Loyer had 12 Turnovers. The BT is going to brutal this year. Their are 8 teams that could win it! Purdues chances shrunk last night. Penn St. has a very favorable BT schedule, they have the tie breaker with Purdue.

Yeh, he's going to have to play another guard when against these defensive ace teams. Colvin has brought it across a few times, but it still makes me (and him seemingly) nervous.

I agree, but Purdue played poorly last night. I think and hope they’re better than that but the veterans need (primarily Braden and Fletch) need to show their experience and the other guys need to keep improving. The sky is not falling but this was a bad loss.
Yeah agreed. It was probably the worst I’ve seen Purdue play since probably FDU. They came out flat, disinterested. Sloppy passing—give credit to PSU for that. But this team needs to understand they are getting EVERYONES best every night. They are the hunted. Everyone wants to knock them off for getting their asses kicked by edey the last 3 years.

PSU was even trying to keep us in it by having 16 turnovers themselves.

I was disappointed in Braden the most. He is the one who runs the team and he was jump passing so much early on and putting his guys in bad spots when they caught it. Your question of “is he a good player and not a great one” is interesting. I think he CAN be great but it seems he needs someone else to help and if TKR is turning it over 7 times and Fletch 5 times, then we aren’t winning a ton of games against anyone.

Hope they come out vs Maryland with a lot more focus/execute a whole lot better because teams will continue to replicate this until Purdue can handle it (although not sure how many teams in the B1G have an ace Baldwin).

I hate to be the one to say this, but Maryland is a really bad match-up for Purdue! Purdue needs to rebound!

Unfortunately we saw a continuing trend last night i.e. UConn, Marquette, PSU that big athletic teams especially guards are going to Jam Loyer, Braden forcing them into Turnovers etc. Purdue likes a half court game were they can have nice comfortable shots, everyone's watched the videos now what happens to them with in your face physical games and it's going to be there throughout the BIG season. They are going to have to play faster and move away from there current ring around the rosy style don't know if they including CMP are ready or willing to change, it may take a few more losses. Without the NPOY to fix it in the middle which he did a lot , their weakness is exposed. Buckle up gonna be a rough ride I'm afraid.

My thoughts are that the BIG10 refs are not going change. And the BIG10 is going to be a very physical season. To be successful you need an inside presence and to dominate the boards.

Watching Purdue for the past 10 years, it doesn’t appear our style of defense is to prevent other teams from shooting a 3 point shot. We may get in their face with our hands up, but we never deny them the opportunity to shoot. We are always playing defense between the shooter and the basket. Rather than playing defense in front of the shooter and denying him the pass from his teammates.

I like Braden but he is not very aggressive on defense and neither is Loyer. Last year Jones was that defensive specialist. He’s being replaced by Harris and Colvin . Maybe in time, they will become a defensive stopper.

It was said above, teams have found a formula of how to beat Purdue. You just use big tough defensive oriented guards and pressure Loyer and Braden. This begs the question, why doesn’t Painter recruit these type of guards rather than Gatorade shooters?

Are you seriously questioning Painters recruiting?

Big Ten refs are wildly inconsistent from game to game (and sometimes even within games).

Kind of crazy to throw UConn into the mix in trying to form a trend.

You don't think the way UConn guarded us in the championship is similar to how Marquette and PSU guarded us , smothering our guards where the forced Turnovers and limited their shooting. All those games we could not free our guards to hardly pass the ball .

I understand your general point but I’ll channel Painter and say ‘those things may look the same to fans because there are some general similarities but in reality the situations were very different’.

I have some concerns about Braden from those three games. He has to find ways to be productive and play within himself when he sees heavy pressure intended to take him out of the game. I think he can do it but hasn’t yet. Fletch was passive against UConn vs sloppy with the ball and bad in his decision making against Penn State. Trey was probably the biggest problem vs PSU and that had nothing to do with guard pressure. He’s going to have to learn to take care of the ball when he’s getting fouled and not getting calls. He got screwed by the refs and wasn’t able to handle it.

Why it's almost like they are a normal basketball team having a normal, competitively challenging year.
There is nothing new here folks, this is just us getting used to the post-Zachen era.

I think Uconn and PSU were more similar than Marquette. UConn and PSU had better rim protection and more pressure on Braden I believe. Maybe, I'm forgetting some things...it happens, but that quickly came to the front of my mind. I think the Marquette errors were even more attributed to Purdue's offense than their defense...even though I always believe it is an offensive problem.

nobody rides coasters for the flat parts.

It seems to me that one solution to these hard hedges is for Braden to dump the ball back to a diving Trey to lead a 4 on 3, half court fast break. You want to jump double Braden at the top? FIne, we'll take a man advantage to the hoop.
TKR has the passing skills to do it effectively. Can he make the right decisions and control the turnovers playing on the run? Will Matt put that pressure on him in the first place?
Bust that double with a couple of layups and an open 3 and they'll come out of that bs.

The problem has been teams have pushed our offense and Braden so far out, that getting the ball to try at the top of the 3 pt line or beyond doesn’t help much. We need to start the offense closer than what PSU and Marquette pushed us out.

Start the offense from the wings instead of the top and it’s tougher to push Smith out.

Yeah for sure but may be easier said than done. Especially if that’s what you’ve practiced all year/the last 3 and tough to adjust that quick. Not saying you’re wrong but more so tough for paint to change it up this late in season.

Yeh, that's a big name NBA player.
Next year.
I know that he's dropped 20 pounds since arriving at Maryland but really getting in shape will help his cause immensely. He's long and skilled but his physique is still soft and he could be more explosive. Really nice player but those are the things that make NBA GM's nervous and cause players to slip in the draft.
