Carsen

IMO, PU has gotten a good one. From everything I've read, I'm happy......and I think he will be the classic Matt Painter "steal". Tough, energetic scorer.

I really wish we had a good forward or center in 2016. Even if we hit a few of the good in state players in 2017, I have a feeling that Haas, Swanigan, and possibly Edwards will be gone next year. That means we will be starting freshmen. Not critical, I am just being greedy. Having a solid PG in the pipeline like Carsen is going to be good for the program

He's a left-handed PG (I feel is the best position for a lefty) and the kid has a mean streak (check out some of his dunks). He will be fantastic.

I feel like he is underrated in his ranking numbers. Seems to be a good catch.

He will have at least one year to learn from PJ. He also will allow Weatherford to slide over to play the two and guard the best backcourt player on the opposition and keep Carsen out of foul trouble.

Where do you think Haas and Edwards are going? They will be very good college players, but neither is leaving early. I can see Swanigan going after next year, but he's the only one.

I think Isaac is the only one that has a realistic shot going after this season. Vince and Caleb could both go next season.

Sometimes commits persuade friends to join them. Are there any bigs who play with Carsen in high school or AAU worth pursuing?

I honestly think there is a good chance all three play out their eligibility at Purdue. Would you agree we've had some great players at Purdue over the years? Ask yourself when was the last time one of them left early for the NBA. Then ask how many over, say, the last 30 years left early for the show. I don't mean to direct this at you, per se, because I see this sentiment a lot on these boards and it's just silly. BTW, Draft Express and NBA draft are probably the two most reliable draft sites and they don't have any of the three players being drafted at all. Relax, this team is set for the next two years after this minimum. Beyond that, it's up to Painter's performance with the 2017 class.

I'd put it at 95% for Vince playing all four years here. Haas lower. Probably around 70%. I think he will be a legit prospect after his junior year. With Swanni, I would put it at 60% he plays all four years. His junior year will be interesting to see if his skill can overcome his lack of elite athleticism. Projecting out the future, next year won't be as god as this year probably unless we can sign like a 4-star 7 foot grad transfer to back-up Haas. But the year after next, if the core 3 mentioned above stay, I think it will be another potential final four team.
Painter really needs to hit a home run with the 2017 and 2018 class. If he didn't miss on Herard in the 2016 class, I think next year could have been a final four team as well. Our offense and defense are so critical to rotating our 7-footers. Can we win a lot next year with just Haas and whoever else at the 5 rotating? Of course! But the team won't be that upper shelf tier imo. With Herard, I think it would have been a different story. Huge miss imo.

The only two that immediately came to mind were Russell Cross and Glenn Robinson, each with a year of eligibility left.

I think Big Dog had 2 years of eligibility left.

All this "carsen is under-rated" talk is well and good, but is there any basis for it? How many on here have seen him play in person? I'd bet not many. Further, has any Purdue poster in the history of posting thought that a Purdue recruit may have been over-rated?

Not a knock on anybody, just applying my usual skepticism.

Edwards after this year. I just don't see that.

Yep,
Edwards isn't going anywhere yet. He still needs to develop more quickness and his release on his jumper is still slow.
I think Haas likes college ball (but then again, having a lot of $$ waved in your face can change that).
Biggie still has a lot to work on since he's no longer the biggest/strongest player on the floor. I think he'll become a Draymond Green type when he develops a consistent midrange jumper.

Big Dog had 1 year left, he played 2 years and was a prop 48 his freshman year.

Wrong. You could not redshirt during a Prop 48 year. Same reason Jimmy Oliver played only 3 years.

Interesting side question here......like New Pal and ZZ, I was under the impression that under the "old" Prop 48 rules, the player lost a year of eligibility......just like in the days when freshmen were ineligible.

Yes he lost his freshman year of playing because of the prop 48 year. So he left with after his 3rd year of eligibility. That missed year he became a Purdue intramural league basketball legend and I have the emotional scars to prove it.

Sorry for the delayed response. This new app is so shitty it will not let me respond on my phone so I have to wait until I get home and get on the laptop. I find it interesting that you think Haas is dead set as a four year player. He has cooled off from his earth shattering 76% FG. I think that is a good thing because it will give Hammons the attention he has earned this year. Haas is 7'2", has a decent hook shot, and can shoot FT's at a reasonable rate...I find it hard to believe we keep him four but I would love it.
Edwards has not been as dominate as I thought he would be early in the season. There is probably a good likelihood he is a four year player. He has the right size and a good enough outside shot to play 2 or 3 in the NBA. I can't wait to see him reach his potential. I concede on Edwards.
Someone else said a 60% chance Swanigan is here four years? No way he is here more than two. His defense needs work but his rebounding and offensive skill set are truly elite. He shoots threes like a guard. The only NBA team that gives a shit about defense is the Pacers so he has many other potential homes even if his D doesn't improve. Painter has said Swanigan's work ethic is outstanding so I expect his game will continue to improve until the day he is drafted.

Frankie,

I think you could make a pretty good case for the Spurs playing some defense along with Da Bullls and the Celtics.....might even throw Memphis in there. If CS hits his potential, he'd fit right in with Pop down in San Antonio.

Not sure where you get the left hand notion if you are speaking of Carsen. Every video I have seen, he is a right handed shooter.

Kinda wonder where this puts weatherford with pj more than likely being the starter and Carson likely backing him up.

IMO, Grant will be a defensive specialist for the bulk of his time at Purdue. Mostly playing the 2 early on with increasing minutes each year. As an upperclassman, I could see him backing up the 1 & 2 positions, again, primarily as a defensive stopper (ala Kramer) and getting 15-20 minutes/game.

Mostly agree with this assessment. I think what Painter may have seen in GW is his high competitive spirit and his want and will to win. If you watch the bench, he is consistently one of the guys giving props to his teammates during and after the games. As much as a player may not want to RS, Basil and he truly appear to have bought in to their roles this season and appear to really support their guys. Weatherford, if he can improve his shot to not be a liability on the offensive end as Kramer did his latter part of his junior year and senior year, will be a heck of a role player for Purdue that can turn the tide of a game with his defensive ability. With the rule changes, it would be great to have a guy come in and simply harass a good perimeter player in to mistakes and see how much Purdue can get away with in a certain game on the wings with a guy like Weatherford. If the kid comes in next season and picks up 3-4 fouls in a stretch of 5 minutes without putting a guy on the line, it will go a long way to frustrating an opposing player.

Yeah ok, I can see that. I guess since pj and Carsen can both shoot grant could be more the role that Johnny is playing this year, more an opportunistic slasher than a shooter and defensive stopper. I agree with you guys that there will be a spot for him.

For those that haven't seen the left handed posterized dunk Carsen had, here it is. I like his attitude and swagger. Quick release on his jump shot and looks like a player that John Wooden would say was 'quick but not in a hurry.' Great pick up for Coach Painter and seems to give Coach the ability to look for a quality 5th year transfer big guy to provide some depth.

Isaac is not going anywhere this year. Yeesh.
Yeah. I think it is safe to say that the only possible one leaving is Biggie. But he has a LOT of work to do yet.

That said, Painter got a VERY good one again in Edwards. I am of course having high expectations based off of what I have been reading about him, but I can see him coming in and starting day one.

My take on early entry:

Haas:
After this year - 10%
After his junior year - 50%

Swanigan:
After this year - 20%
After his sophomore year - 60%
After his junior year - 80%

Edwards:
After this year - 1%
After his junior year - 10%
All 0% this year..
