He played great today. Doesn't mean he always will. For the next 18 months, he will have that stigma that Edey made him better than he is. I don't disagree with the statement. Can he still be an AA candidate, POY candidate, and lead this team to great heights? Yes. But he's better with Edey than without him. No question in my mind.Someone on here a couple days ago suggested this and maybe having Eden is what made him. I think he wrong.
Edey would make 365 teams better if he played with them! DUH! Braden is one of the best point guards in the country, now that Edey has gone, his numbers are even better, EVEN though teams don't have to worry about Edey and can concentrate on Braden. Braden is the best point guard Purdue has ever have had with or without Edey!He played great today. Doesn't mean he always will. It’s really simple. The more points Braden scores the more we win. So my answer is both.A question I have. Does painter want Braden to score more? Or is his scoring the result of other players not scoring?
Would we be a better team if Loyer or Colvin were our leading scorer and Braden just was a floor general directing our offense?
I’m thinking back to the old days of Parkinson and Sichting when they were point guards. Parkinson liked to score and be a point guard. Sichting was more concerned about being a floor general and directing the offense. We enjoyed a lot more success as a team with Sichting although I believe Parkinson ended with higher personal stats.
Do we want to win games? Or do we want our point guard to score a lot of points and become a first team all American? What’s more important?
Well Mr. Obvious that is true, Zach was back to back POY in CBb, only been a couple in history. Of course it was easier for Braden and made him better, but I will still call him great and the one thing in life I know for sure is what a great PgHe played great today. Doesn't mean he always will. As u can read above we have never lost in his career when he has at least 13 shotsA question I have. Does painter want Braden to score more? Or is his scoring the result of other players not scoring?

I’m kind of honored to have inspired a whole thread.Who said that
Haha I knew what ya meant !I’m kind of honored to have inspired a whole thread.
I certainly raised the question as to whether Braden is great or just good, but I think he’s conflating multiple posts from various people. I don’t recall saying that Edey (or Eden) is the only reason that Braden was good.
Braden was excellent tonight. That was an AA level performance. The questions are whether 1) he can perform at an elite level more consistently and 2) whether he can perform at that level when teams are pressuring him to take the ball out of his hands.
Someone in the "Issues" thread. Has an Iowa handle.Who said that
It has been so far…just need that point guard to also lead us in scoring or close to it. UNLESS, someone besides TKR and Loyer can average double digits (looking at) and/or Heide/colvin.Someone in the "Issues" thread. Has an Iowa handle.
I think it's possible Braden will be better this year without Edey. It won't be "throw it into the post" every possession. This year's team has a lot of possible weapons: Loyer, Trey, Colvin, Heidi, Cox, Harris--could be a point guard paradise.
Interesting. Troy Lewis would not have been my first guess for the last one to do it.
And I didn't say anything contrary to that. It wasn't a negative comment.Well Mr. Obvious that is true, Zach was back to back POY in CBb, only been a couple in history. I think he's better already, but this team needs so much more from him than last year's team did. While he didn't face the same type of half-court pressure today that Marquette and PSU provided, I thought he did a better job of playing within himself, getting to the basket, and getting himself relatively easy shots. IMO that half-court pressure seems to speed him up and the degree of difficulty on the shots and passes he attempts goes through the roof.Someone in the "Issues" thread. Has an Iowa handle.

I think the original point you were probably trying to make was that this team can't afford for Braden to have an off game, which is different than the last 2 years. And he's going to have them. Not many players don't.I think he's better already, but this team needs so much more from him than last year's team did. He's a very good player, and he's just starting his junior year in a role that's very different from his last two seasons. He needs to continue to progress to reach the level that he wants and this team needs from him. Today was an excellent start.
Agree that everyone has off games. I’d say that he cant afford to have an off game when it really matters. That’s the difference between really good and great, IMO. He has clearly shown that he can have great games, can he be a great player by leading this team to the wins that matter most?I think the original point you were probably trying to make was that this team can't afford for Braden to have an off game, which is different than the last 2 years. It will definitely help if that quartet of Heidi/Colvin/Cox/Harris keeps making progress. I think they will.It has been so far…just need that point guard to also lead us in scoring or close to it. UNLESS, someone besides TKR and Loyer can average double digits (looking at) and/or Heide/colvin.
Maryland did not commit to taking Smith out of the game as PSU and Marquette did. I'm guessing their coach didn't feel they had the personnel to do that. The true measure of Smith will be how does he do in games going forward where teams do commit to that strategy. I don't think I've seen anyone dumping on Smith in any of these threads, at least not any of the regular posters. I feel it's more a matter of some of us saying an AA PG has to do it when the other team is focused on taking him out. It has proven effective by teams that have tried it this season. Let's see what he does going forward. Thankfully, not every team is structured to implement that strategy. But we will face some teams coming up very soon that will.
The next two should be of interest to your point
Wrong - If Braden gets 15 to 20 assists Purdue could easily win with Braden scoring 6! Baldwin is probably the best all-around guard in the BT. Myles Rice????? He is one of poorest rated guards in the Big Ten, IU has played one of the most friendliest schedules, yet Rice has a BPR of 3.24 and a Box BPR 1.69. Baldwin's BPR of 7.96 and Box BPR of 4.82. Smiths BPR is 7.20 and a Box BPR of 6.58. Purdue has already played the two best rated guards in the BT, Baldwin and Gillispie (BPR=6.66, Bos BPR=3.19). No. 3 guard is Thorton. Myles Rice???? You lost any credibility you had with that one! Just for your info K. Carlyle has a BPR 1.59 and Box BPR -0.15???Well yea he's good. Kinda why he was picked by many to be POY in the B1G. Still has some things to clean up(jumps to pass too much like Yogi used to and gets caught). Definitely needs to be way more aggressive scoring. Purdue isn't going to win big if he's scoring 6 points. Purdue isn't going to win big if Smith is outplayed by the opposite point guard. And there aren't many who are capable on any given night in the B1G. Baldwin is one. Myles Rice, Jeremy Fears and a couple others but those guys gotta be on it for the night. Purdue will go as Smith goes and that's been the feeling before the season even started and it hasn't changed. Would just like to see him be aggressive scoring from the tip. I get he wants to get everyone involved but I'd rather see him set the tone by his aggression and that aggression will more easily feed to others and getting others open.

That was six (6) questions. Start over.A question I have. Does painter want Braden to score more? Or is his scoring the result of other players not scoring?

As of now, the situation is better than two years ago, but not as good as another ball handler like Lance. I don’t think PSU causes the problems had Lance been on the court with Braden. Actually, I wouldn’t mind Purdue playing PSU again, but it is a shortage of another player with some ball handling and quickness that is missing. The freshmen will be fine but it was an away game and they are freshmen with a more complex offense than many teams employ.Maryland did not commit to taking Smith out of the game as PSU and Marquette did. We need those guys to grow up quick because Auburn is going to bring the defense and athleticism and quickness and can bury us very quick. They will press us as long as they need to and won’t stop.As of now, the situation is better than two years ago, but not as good as another ball handler like Lance. Perhaps those freshmen will be ready the next game a coach applies pressure as with a team built to do so. You have to have that 2&3 man able to handle pressure when facing a team built for pressure and getting a slower whistle. I’m guessing Auburn is but another early season test and hopefully Giccari, CJ and Myles grow in that area and suspect the freshmen guards are in the lead to get there
My History: Played basketball till I was 37, played 1 year ccllege, coached, watched Purdue play in 3 final fours, was at 5 IU vs PU games (live) with Gene vs Bobby. Have two autographed basketballs, Gene Keady, Matt Painter and players! Was a John Purdue member for years! Loved watching Mount! I watched enough basketball and played enough to know that your a young PUP who has some learning to do!Cool bro. TLDR. Try watching basketball.
I think you nailed it. The two freshman guards need to be ready to fill that role by the spring and if they’re not I don’t think MP has a choice but to hit the portal in advance of next season. As of now, the situation is better than two years ago, but not as good as another ball handler like Lance. I have no idea what kind of press they run. So far I have no reason to be concerned about a zone press. Not worried about a man press unless it has a run and jump to it. My bigger concern is pressure half court man D. This will be another away game with pressure...another learning moment. Hopefully Purdue does well...and if not does better than the PSU game to show some progress. We need those guys to grow up quick because Auburn is going to bring the defense and athleticism and quickness and can bury us very quick. Need Braden to be at his very best along with TKR guarding Broome. Gonna be tough but (hopefully) a fun one to watch.
they should get a lot of experience this year and hopefully improve in that area. None have the speed of Lance, but both could be good enough. We shall see. Matt saw this and why Giccari was starting earlierI think you nailed it. Myles Rice would have to play his very best and Braden his worst to outplay Braden you Loosier.Well yea he's good. Kinda why he was picked by many to be POY in the B1G. I was really hoping that Myles and or Cam would have developed a better handle and be able to attack when Smith is doubled. To this point they haven't shown that ability. I agree, it's most likely the freshmen that will need to do that. Texas A&M and more so Auburn will be great tests to see if we've made some progress. Both are quick, physical teams that don't stop coming at you on defense.they should get a lot of experience this year and hopefully improve in that area.
