Anybody else worried about Cancun and our defense?

I just am so worried about our defense right now. That Nova with its athletes could get to the rim so easily, I was able to blame some on our defensive problems and some on a great offensive team.

But watching Georgia State got me worried. There were times, way too many times, when GS got any shot it wanted: getting to the rim for layups and wide-open threes. It looked bad for a big part of the second half. We were better down the stretch, but even then, GS choked a lot and missed some open threes and free throws.

It's a vacation tourney with the distractions. I don't know; I got a bad feeling here. This seems like trap games to me.

I'm not worried. It's too early in the season and as we saw at the end of the GS game, we have the ability to do good defense.

Basketball has become more of an offensive game IMO with the rule changes anyway. I'm more worried that we have a carry over of the shots not falling than anything else.

I think the team we saw in the last 10 minutes of the Nova' game and the team we saw in the last 10 minutes of the GSU game is closer to what Purdue is this season. The issue is they aren't playing up to the needed effort level. A game like GSU should be a wake up call to show the team how effective their defense can and should be when they play with effort and intensity. When they play and build off their defense, the offense comes around...it always has under CMP. When his teams play with defensive intensity...they are hard to beat on the offensive end.

So who lights that fire besides CMP during the game if it isn't hot enough, JDB? BS/CS right now?. That is one difference from last year I see so far......Ray Davis could do it most of the time.

Defense is about all intensity and positioning. As long as they put in the efforts we should be okay. I just hope that this cancun semi vacation loosen things up for Vince, cus we really do need him going forward.

I like the teams we have the opportunity to play in Cancun. Should be a good test for the Boilers. I could see them winning out or losing out in Cancun at this point. On the offensive side, I think the venue will affect the shooters for all teams and so our inside game could work to our advantage. But if shots aren't falling for the opponent, all the more important to stop the dribble penetration. Should be entertaining basketball. I'm hoping for a win against Utah State and a chance to play Auburn because Bruce Pearl's teams are always tough matchups for a team like Purdue. Good to faceup against decent teams with different styles than we see in BIG. Can only help come tourney time.

I think it's CS & BS. Both will lead by example. Hope it's enough.

A little concerned about our defense. More concerned about getting the outside shooting necessary to keep our offense balanced. If we get that we should be able to win our games in Cancun even if our defense isn't great.

I don't think we are going to fix our defense overnight. It will be a season long issue where we see gradual progress as the season goes on but I think we will be significantly better in February and March than we are right now and we will need to be to get to where we want this team to be.
