Any idea who Coach Painter is talking about?

It was also mentioned yesterday during the game that Braden is being setup differently than before.. I forget exactly what Bardo said, but it was an adjustment done to combat the guards that can cause Smith issues.

So really, not all things are equal now compared to before.. which with a coach as good as Painter, we should expect changes to happen.... all to get us ready for March.
I feel like they're getting into the offense quicker. I haven't watched a ton of the last few games because of vacation, but what I have watched, the sets have been starting quicker and earlier.

Illinois if KJ is playing and Boswell can focus solely on his defense (cuz the rest of his game aint pretty), and then MAYBE -- Oregon, Wisconsin and Sparty.

And you saw what happens when we didn't hit 3s vs Rutgers. TKR also had his midrange "push/floater" shot going yesterday....him and Smith have been ABUSING teams in the PnR.
The Oregon game will be interesting. As a fan, I won't 'expect' to get a win in Eugene, but it will be a good test for Braden and team.

Approaching $4 million. Cooper Flagg is said to be getting well over $3 million, and he's not a generational player. Not sure Purdue would meet that number.
what's your ballpark guess on what Painter has to work with in NIL for both the current roster but also to get 1-2 portal guys? Yes, I realize it's not necessarily Painters decision on how money is allocated since players can sign private deals as well, but you understand what I'm asking.

You didn't ask me, but if MP wanted to spend the money I think he could get whatever funding he needed if the pitch was 'we need these guys to go after an NC'. That doesn't mean that he'll do that, but I'd be surprised if funding were an issue.

Flagg is pretty damn good (number 1 pick more than likely and he just turned 18 😮 ) and next year AJ Dybantsa (next years projected number 1 pick) is rumored to be receiving 7M from BYU 😱

Resources are not unlimited. They need to come from program supporters and if the funds are not there today with the alliance, that is a reflection on the donor pool. All indications are that there are some schools (e.g. IU and BYU) with some big dollar donors backing them, but I don’t get the sense that Purdue is in that top tier group.

Is that because Purdue hasn’t tried to actually ever spend that much? We don’t know how much they actually have.

Spending that much hasn’t worked out for IU nor byu this year or Rutgers. Maybe it will for them next year, I mean for the sake it better.

Looking good so far for Illinois (but not sure how much they actually spent).

But....people here claim that Purdue can't or doesn't have to funds to win a bidding war?

I’m not talking about spending with IU, BYU, etc. on an annual basis, I’m talking about a one year push. If MP wanted to raise, say $5M to $8M for next year, he could.

To your point, if he needed an incremental $5M a year for the next five years it’s a much larger and more difficult ask.

Well the question wasn't is Purdue too cheap, we already know that from football.

Michigan has a high school kid coming in at QB with an NIL deal in the $10M range. Is he worth it? I guess that depends on what the criteria is. But his 'worth' is whatever someone is willing to pay him.
Is UM trying to buy a championship? Maybe, but no UM fan (nor Purdue fan if Purdue was paying that much) is going to apologize if the kid is big time successful.

Apologize or condemn?

What do you mean “is UM trying to buy a championship”? It’s not maybe, it’s Absolutely they are, lol. Just like BYU bball is spending 7M on Dybansta next year.

Just like IU and every other school that is willing to spend the money and that has the money. But when will they learn that most freshman (and players) aren’t worth that much for college? Obviously there are some.

But look at Washington bball. They paid Osobor and estimated 2M….dude is a role player at best on a P5 (he would have been a decent option next to TKR tbh) and is out of shape (that would have changed at Purdue). Look at IU, paying Ballo 1M. He’s out of shape and the definition of being good only because he’s usually the biggest guy on the court. When he has actual competition his size, he’s not very good (similar to ward last year).

Ok so everyone thinks Painter is a great judge of character and talent right? But somehow we keep citing examples where one or both didn't happen somewhere else?

Do those qualities disappear because the kid is in the portal?

Not true at all. There are all sorts of reasons why kids go into the portal.
He didn't mean all of them I think. But yes, many portal kids are not good for team chemistry and that may be underlying in why they left school A. Or B. Or C.

What? I was just responding to bone saying teams are buying championships and I have no problem with it. And was stating that paying these guys that amount money isn’t worth it for the most part cuz they aren’t performing. I guess $1M for Ballo isn’t too bad tbh. He is giving them a double double but he certainly isn’t going to win game solely because of his skill. Would have been great to have him on our team but he seems out of shape and lazy and paint and coach B would have had none of that.

And i feel I’m the lone one agreeing we need to add 1-3 pieces in the portal 😂

I really don't have a guess. I doubt that the "budget" could support the current players plus another Zach Edie. But I would also expect that sponsors would be lining up pay for endorsements from another Zach Edie.

There are some educated guesses we can make about how Painter handles recruiting and playing time, but I haven't seen enough history with how Purdue handles NIL for basketball to even pretend to know the inner workings of his mind on that topic.

I don’t think it’s that we’re opposed to the portal as much as that we don’t want it to come at the cost of retention and continuity. Painter is building a great thing with this group and the core is one that he can win with at a very high level. If everyone comes back and is healthy, Purdue is going to be loaded next season. Not just loaded, but extremely connected where the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. I don’t see adding players just to add players. If it makes sense, bring someone in, but it has to be a great fit like Lance Jones was.

100% agree. If we go get several people from the portal, who's minutes are they going to take.. assuming everyone comes back... we're only seeing one departure in Furst and his spot you would imagine is being filled by DJ.... so at most there is room for a backup that may not play many minutes.. plus battling that spot for Berg who already knows the system...

Not opposed to the portal by any stretch, there just doesn't seem to be any significant playing time to offer anyone....
