Look, Vincent is a Boilermaker through and through. He has alot of talent and is struggling right now. For a variety of reason. He is also doing some good things, including last night - like taking a very important charge. So I dont want this to be a bash - just things that may help him get back on track quicker.
1. Sprint to your spot. Offense and defense. When getting back on defense, RUN. Even if you dont have too. Get up in your guys grill as he runs up court. The play after VE airballed a 3, he trotted upcourt about 5 feet from his guy with his mouthpiece out. Get mad and play hard. RUN even when you dont have to. That will get your adrenaline going.
2. Communicate with teammates. Again, not to belabor, but this cannot be done with your mouthpiece hanging out. With 10 seconds to go in the first half, VE did not switch on a high-ball screen with Carsen. The result was a foul on Carsen as his player drove to the basket. Carsen was visibly upset and talking to Vince after the call. VE stood with his mouthpiece out and didnt say a word. I dont know what the proper D was (I think we usually switch with 10 secs or less - but dont know in that situation for sure). Point is simple. You are a Captain. Talk to Carsen about what you will do next time in that situation and why. Act like a Captain by running hard and communicating with teammates.
3. Take care of the ball. It may not be a travel, but it is getting called at least 30% of the time (perimeter move). It is unfortunate if it is not really a travel, but just dont make that move. Adjust since the refs will not.
Three simple things. No doubt they are easy to do. And I think it will spur your own game and help teammates as well! Now go get 'em, VE!
