Now that the blue-print is out on Purdue since the Butler game, if things stay as they are in terms of offensive design....our success is simply going to be based on 3pt shooting. We have no mid-range game, so it's either 3 point shooting or Hammons/Haas inside. We have good players...but honestly I won't be surprised if we lose more bad games like this if Painter doesn't start getting more creative.
Teams have clearly figured out that taking away Hammons/Haas inside by keeping a help side guy ready to double on the catch or denying the over the top lob is the way to best defend us.
Because we have very little dribble/drive attack from our guards, which is one way of freeing up a lot of things both inside and on the perimeter, we simply depend way too much on making 3's. This was also the case last year (see Cincinnati game). Hammons could go for 25 and 10, but if we only knock down 6 or 7 threes, where is the rest of the scoring going to come from? Octeus and Davis were not aggressive offensively in that game and we sputtered.
This is why our offense looks so much better when Davis is aggressive offensively attacking the rim. When he decided last year to be aggressive, we typically looked really good offensively. But when he is passive attacking, our offense stalls out.
We can't get to the free throw line anymore because our bigs are doubled when they catch and we have nobody attacking the rim. That's a lot of points we are missing out on.
I'd really like to see more pick and role action with Davis/Hill/Vince having the option of attacking the rim. Force them to be more assertive by getting them going to the rim. If anything, it helps our rhythm shooters like Dakota and Stephens get better looks.
As things are now, however, our offense is way to dependent on making 3's...which is not a recipe to advance in the tournament...or win games in general. This season is going to come down to if Davis/Hill/Vince decide to start taking the bull by the horns.
