Unacceptable! The starters had 14. The team is not valuing the ball. This team will lose one of the next 2 games doing that.

IMO, the shot attempts are as much a product of the rules changes. KenPom said pace was up 5% thru the first weekend. Teams, including Purdue, are running more. Purdue's tempo is currently at 73.3, far higher than Painter's highest season ever (2014 when it was 69.0). Last year was 64.6.

Obviously the team can't be so sloppy with the ball. But this team is deep and talented enough to overcome 22 turnovers against most teams. It doesn't mean they always will (or that I want to see them try) but I think you went too far with your contention.

Well, Swanigan had 6 of those, so he definitely hurt the team average.

I think Incarnate Word played really aggressive defense at points, and the refs seemed to let a lot of fouls against us go. Like when Stephens grabbed a loose ball and got absolutely mugged by two IW players. He was being fouled for 20 seconds straight before they called anything. And then they were looking at the replay to determine is Stephens had done something wrong (swung his elbows too much). It was absolutely ridiculous. But when you have that kind of defense being played, and a lot of those kind of fouls being ignored by the refs, you will have more turnovers.

To me, this team has so many positives: hugeness & inside game, solid outside shooting (finally), team chemistry, a sharing mentality...

If we can get our defense where it needs to be and protect the basketball, we will do very well.

I think that once they had the game locked up that they just sort of got lazy and we're probably thinking ahead to ODU. Not what you want, but atleast we were talented enough in other areas to not let it cost us a W.

Just a case of playing down to your competition. I think that Purdue tightens the screws a few notches vs ODU

The turnovers were piling up even in the first half when the game was "relatively" still competitive. Yes, some were offensive fouls, but most were unforced.

It was a problem last year as others have pointed out in multiple threads over the last couple of weeks. Are there other things the team is doing well with? Sure. Although it is difficult to get a good read based upon the teams played so far, I think it's safe to say, there have been improvements made, and that the Boilers will be a difficult squad to handle for anybody.

JMHO, but I think being able to be more careful/efficient with possessions......this includes the TO's and FT opportunities is the single biggest indicator/obstacle for where the "ceiling" is on this team. That's not to say there aren't other factors to consider......like outside shooting....which to me is the next one.

The good thing is that most of the TO problems can be corrected, but if it continues, I'd have a hard time saying it won't cost some games, especially in conference.

I'll be interested to see what happen with ODU, but more real answers won't happen until deeper in the season. So far, so good for the most part.......cautious optimism I suppose.

I agree. However it seems to me that each game has had a focus of what Painter wanted to see from this team.
The last game seemed to be shooing the long ball as we fed the post very little.
Last night it seemed the focus was on the attacking the basket and feeding the post. Defense alos seemed to be a focus.
For sure we will need to clean up the turnovers. But without making the mistakes early in the season, the team won't have any film or experience to learn from.
I assume as the competiom gets better, the focus will be more to our strengths which will be determined by these early games.

Overall I am pleased with the balanced attack we have and I would imagine the defense will get better with experience as well.

So far so good. I am ready for some better competition for sure to see how the team takes a punch in the face and handles playing from behind.

That's a bit of hyperbole. That same team that doesn't "value the ball" had its lowest turnover percentage (6.6%) since 2012 in its game against Vermont.

I thought a lot of it was over passing. Everyone doing their best to "share the ball" when they should just take the shot.

I think there was some of that......also a couple where the player made the right decision but didn't execute. For example, I think it was AJH, was double or triple-teamed, found the open man but tossed it over his head out of bounds. An optimist would think, with practice, they'll get the execution down better.......and that at least making the right decisions is a good start. Although it's not ideal, better to have it now, than in February/March.
