2025 Transfer Portal News/Recruiting

Carmin posted in his blog a few players he thinks we will have interest in. He listed:
  • Carter McCray, Wisconsin
  • Gina Kneepkens, Utah
  • Kailey Woolston, BYU
  • Kaylah Ivey, Boston
  • Yarden Garzon, Indiana

A couple of these players seem to be a major pipe dream considering where we are at as a program - but we will have PT to offer them.
Guyton put out there she has been contacted by Purdue.

I'd be shocked it ANY of them returned Gearld's phone calls, they saw first hand how awful our coaching is already.
But I won’t know that until it becomes an actual fact. So I say dream while you still can before this new administration figures how to monetize even dreaming

Both would be solid pickups. Porter is a true PG who can score but also racks up the assists. Would probably be the starter D1. Welch is an intriguing prospect at the off guard position. She's an Indy native so closer to home. Will be a rising junior. Averaged 10 ppg this past year. A big jump from her rookie campaign. Good 3pt shooter at 45% on 64 tries. Tallied 93 assts BUT had 88 TOs which won't help the TO problem any.

Not portal target related, but hearing Virginia Tech is the expected landing spot for Sophie Swanson after her official visit there.

Not surprising - I'm sure she had formed a pretty good relationship with Duffy when she was recruiting her while at Marquette.

I loved Porter at UWisc. She would be a great pickup. Welch sounds like a depth piece.

Duffy is an exceptional coach and will likely put Sophie in a position to be successful. Seems Purdue loses more to the portal at the guard position. Although CKG calls the shots, I’m wondering if Komara might not be part of an issue. Maybe the guards we’ve lost don’t care to play for her?

We've lost players for over a decade at a high rate. Certainly CKG lost a large number of guards here even before Komara was a coach.

I never understood that hire. Other than her player ties to Purdue, there was nothing on her coaching resume that would she would be good for Purdue, IMO. KK was an integral part of the disaster that SW had at Vanderbilt. I thought she might be the first assistant to be let go, instead, it was Guyton who I thought was during a pretty good job with the bigs.

I think you bring up a good point. CKG has consistently gone after easy gets. Both with players and coaches. KK played so therefore she can coach, is her assumption. Sometimes good players make bad coaches. Sometimes non players make exceptional coaches. CKG surrounds herself with people who will say “yes” and who are easy. Her recruitment of the 3 sets of sisters was disastrous and made us the laughing stock for sure. But it was “easy” to get siblings. It’s easy to get mid-majors… nice person but she just can’t recruit, both players and coaches.

Do we know for sure she was let go or maybe she decided she wanted to move on? McCarthy & Puryear are solid foundational pieces that I’ve heard are great kids. Who really knows the rationale of her departure.

How have the exiting and current players felt about KK?

Maybe you do. Are you saying that though it appeared Guyton was let go, she actually left on her own?

I only read that she was no longer with the program. Of course I’m not sure CKG could ever speak on it since it’s an HR/employment issue but I was curious if anyone knew why she was gone.

Saw where last year's Indiana Ms. Basketball Chloe Spreen committed to IU - she barely played at Alabama. Will be interesting to see how good she truly is.

The first transfer addition of the off-season for the Boilermakers (not counting the return of Madison Layden-Zay), as Purdue women’s basketball lands Northern Arizona transfer guard Taylor Feldman out of the portal. The All-Big Sky selection averaged 16.4 points and 3.9 assists per game this season.

Source: Purdue to host Arkansas guard transfer Kiki Smith for an official visit from April 14-16.

She was the 2024 NJCAA DI Women’s Basketball Player of the Year at Hutchinson CC as a freshman in 2023-24, before transferring to the Razorbacks for the 2024-25 campaign.

Smith averaged 10.2 points and 2.0 assists per game, as well as shooting 42% from the field and 40% from three-point range.

Hutchinson CC---Gene Keady's old stomping ground. Not that it's relevant here. It's just my only Hutchinson CC reference.

Any guard that is able to score 18 pts in 21 minutes against South Carolina is a welcomed addition to West Lafayette, IMO.

Really like this pick up. I feel that it's very similar to Ellis and her addition and she was great for us.

Monday update - Garzon committed to Maryland. Very good fit for her and her game. Kind of a no brainer actually. Ivey committed to Rutgers as expected

Another intriguing name that we may be interested. Rising junior Saige Stahl out of Indiana State. The Sycamores entire roster is essentially in the portal. 6'1 F - Averaged 7 ppg and 7 reb. Had 16 pts and 13 rebounds against us earlier in the year. She'd give us an experienced post and help us with our bench depth, if nothing else.

A name that may be of significance (no inside info) is Phoenix Stotijn, a 5'9 rising sophomore guard out of the Netherlands. May be a connection to incoming guard Douwstra as both from the Netherlands and close in age.

She averaged 7.2 ppg and 2.2 apg as a rookie last year. Solid numbers playing in the SEC.

She committed to IU.

On March 3, Mike Carmin had written "could a former player or two be in the mix(?)" to join the team - besides Madison, who else could he be referring to?

RaShaya Kyle just entered the portal out of Florida..... would be kind of shocked but she'd be a welcomed addition to give us an instant post player to help Gordon make a better transition into the college game. We are going to need a post player out of the portal IMO.

Post is the one position we don't need we will have three next year, all young

We have 1 post and 2 forwards - a true freshmen and 2 sophomores. Gordon will struggle as a true freshmen. We will struggle as a result. 3 players for 2 positions (4 and a 5?) - Injuries will happen - and then we will be toast yet again.

Nice pickup in Feldman. Amateur scouting report -

I watched one of her 2 games vs Arizona(19-14). 10 turnovers in 2 games against them. Arizona does run some press defense.

She is a better dribbler than Spider is, but isn't near a J.Terry level.. I'd prefer Feldman in more of a combo/back up PG role. She can create a little for teammates, will use both hands to make passes. Her shot release is fine. 36% on 164 3pt attempts last season. The 2.4 turnovers is a bit high, but I'd imagine alot of that was from a high usage rate(32 mpg) and being the primary ball handler. Speed is decent(Ellis level speed perhaps).

If we're comparing her to Jones -
Feldman brings better shooting, dribbling, and a more heady player(less turnover prone). We do lose the athleticism/ability to create one's own shot. Jones is probably a slightly better rebounder too.

Overall, a better addition than most of the transfers we had last year. It's too bad she'll only be around for one year and it makes me wonder what CKG's strategy is for the rest of these portal additions.. next year is important(maybe her last) but she still has to be thinking long term and pull in a few transfers with multiple years of eligibility.

It also begs the question of 2026 recruits. I didn't hear about any being on campus, coming to games after the football season concluded. (Probably for the best, with the train wreck that was last year)

I think Madison can play some 4, and it's not like alot of women teams throw 2 burly posts players at teams at once. maybe we grab a slender 6'2ish post like a Bass but I like those 3(Mccarthy, Puryear, Gordon) battling at the 5.

Gordon is listed at 6'7. Tall kids like that are great - but they are also prone to injury as well - and they will inevitably take some time to adjust to the college game - no matter how highly ranked - Betts had a pretty bad freshmen year at Stanford before transferring to UCLA where she is an absolute beast. She was considered a mobile post for her size coming out of HS and she could only physically play 10 mpg. Gordon has a great frame but college is a completely different game than she's ever experienced. I don't know how many minutes she can play as a true rookie.

McCarthy is way too thick and slow to play pf, and Puryear is at her best under the basket.

We arent winning much next year anyway, we still have an utterly incompetent coach running a very simple offense because it's all she knows. That's before you figure in over half the team will be low impact transfers.

What hogwash. Betts was behind Iriafen, Brinks, and another post at Stanford. Tara thought Betts would sit for two years waiting her turn to play, she guessed wrong.

She’s actually the one that crossed my mind, although I’d be surprised if that happened. She would help though.
