2022 Recruiting

PG need wrapped up. I forgot we also have an extra scholarship from Dow, so 2 more left and potentially 3 if Ivey goes pro after next year.
You might be under estimating Ethan Morton.. we haven’t seen the real Morton yet. I have high hopes he wins and keeps the PG spot once Hunter leaves. He has the potential... I hope.

We would need a couple PGs with handles. Not underestimating Morton. What if he gets into foul trouble? Smith is not coming in and starting. There would still be a need if we didn’t get Smith with Hunter leaving. They would have the flexibility of playing both Morton and Smith if Smith is a good shooter.

Desmond Bane says hi! No high end offers, no star rankings, no nothing until the end of his recruitment and to top that off he played at a very small private school.
I remember people bashing Painter for even considering offering him (can’t recall if we didn’t offer or if scholarship #s was the issue) well that same kid went on to star at TCU and is currently playing in the NBA.

According to Rivals, Ivey was offered by ND and Butler.

But, you still want to compare either Edwards or Ivey to Smith?
You criticized Ivey, Edey, and Edwards offers at the time because of their low rating. You were on a one-and-done crusade. Now you deny it because of how it worked out. And you stopped your mantra that Purdue needs to recruit the 5-star one-and-dones.

I love the ranking guys. Even the analyst seem to change the ranking of the top 100 kids all the time. Those rankings aren't based on system, need or ceiling. They are essentially the AAU ranking. The top 20-40 seem to be the focus of the rankings beyond that is a crapshoot.

Two spots filled for 2022. Who are the top targets for the rest of the class? Who do you want, and who do you think Painter and his staff get to sign?

Likely gets: Paul McMillan and Heide
Coin flip: Jalen Washington
Doubtful: Seth Trimble

I think you can take 3 at the 1/2 spot so McMillan isn't out of the question yet.

Of course we all "Hope" a player turns into something special. We all "hoped' Wheeler was going to turn into an NBA level player.
But what has Morton shown that would give any indication?
The knock on him was that when he got into AAU ball against better players than what his was facing in high school, that he wasn't at their level.

Purdue almost always offers before other name schools offer. Why do you act like you don't know that?

Never mind. I know the answer.

As I said before, why did these schools offer in the first place?
I'll tell you: Because they think he's good enough to play there and not good enough to play at a P5 school. Period.

If that kid is a sure fire P5 player, he ain't getting offers from IUPUI, App State, Montana, etc. Those schools aren't offering because they know they have no shot. But when a bunch of not even mid-major programs are offering, that's a concern.

Oh, Lil Andy my friend. You know that's 100% incorrect. And if you can find where I criticized the offers to Ivey and Edwards, I'll make a nice donation to your favorite charity.
I was always on the Ivey and Edwards bandwagon from the first videos I saw of them in HS.
Now, if you want to talk about players like Bade, Tacos, IT and now Smith, yeh, I don't think they're B10 level players.

Not sure what to expect. Maybe they get Gibbs-Lawhorn to come a year early if he recovers this year.

Im just surprised that Baylor was able to win with guys who had no, or few, high major offers coming out of high school. Clearly the offer list makes the player. I have no idea what kind of player Smith will be but there are plenty of examples of good players in college who weren't offered by high majors.

I don't have the time, but do you want to prove that by listing Baylors last 4 recruiting classes and their offer lists?

By the way, Baylor has 2 guys expected to be picked in the 1st round of the draft.....

My bourbon fund would be nice😉

Man, because of allocation? Any Weller can switch that palate back to Bourbon. If not, cheers!
Nah. Bourbon and IPAs give me the shits, hangovers and too many "where's my pants?" nights.
I stick with rum and Mexican pilsners. It gets me where I need to be without paying for it the next day.

Carsen Edwards was offered by Lamar and Tulsa, which is why you criticised Painter signing him. You deny it now, but you just demonstrated your thinking at that time.
Bonefish Math:
low ranking + few offers = bad recruit

Lenny is going to be Lenny. We need some degree of “outside the box” thinking around here, even if most of don’t agree with his conclusions. At least he is a real Purdue fan, and he isn’t trolling. He believes what he’s posting.

Carsen was a top 100 recruit offered by multiple p5 schools including Baylor.

That is correct, but some perspective...

Carsen was barely a top 100 recruit via Rivals, which doesn't carry much weight anymore. 24/7 had him at 139 with a composite of 118.

Yes, he was offered by Baylor and a handful of other respectable programs, but was expected to sign locally (likely SMU). Being offered by Baylor carries a lot more weight in 2021, since they just won the NC. Purdue was clearly head and shoulders above all his offers (Baylor, K State, Vandy, VT, Texas Tech, UH, SMU, etc.).

While a 4-star recruit, he truly was a diamond in the rough.

Funny thing is, I'm right more often than I'm wrong. And, on the occasion I am wrong, I admit it and eat crow.
I will say that after the Ivey class and then the Kaufman/Furst class, these next three commitments seem, on the surface, to be a little underwhelming unless Painter can add a couple serious play making, Ivey-like studs to the class.

I'm not sure I'd say Purdue was head n shoulders above those other programs, considering Baylor just won a NC, UH was in the FF, we got beat by VT and TT and Vandy landed a couple of 5* burger boys during Carsen's time. Those are some pretty good credentials for the teams most heavily recruiting him. (certainly better than App State, IUPUI, Montana, etc).

I think he was well evaluated and not a diamond in the rough Painter snuck away from everyone else.

Hmm. Ivey, Edwards, Edey, Eifert. You are far more likely to deny what you said than to eat crow. You would be so much more believable if you just waited to see how they play before you declared them failures. But you have always relied on what you read on the rating sights. No original thinking involved.

If you're right about that you're bound to get a 🤣 ...

But fringe Top 100 wasn't even enough for Lenny. He was on his mantra that Painter was a failure at recruiting because he wasn't signing 5-star one-and-dones. It's why he didn't like the Carsen commit.

Carsen shut down that line of thinking for him.

What?

In 2016 Baylor would be known to win the NC in 2021?

WTH?

And, Vandy? You're going to put Vandy over Purdue? Dude.

In 2016 there's absolutely no way any of those programs had the national reputation of Purdue. None.

I know there's a penchant to bash Purdue, but... no. That's not a point you'll successfully argue, but no doubt you'll try.

I don’t know how anyone could watch him once (or watch his highlights) and not see that this kid is special. Special handles, special vision, special touch, special awareness.

Never saw that from Thompson or Ryne Smith in high school.

Guarantee Braden Smith will be a Purdue all-time favorite by 2025.

Umh... isn't ot the oppisite. Desmond Bane wasn't offerred. Better comparison.
Grant Weatherford.
