“That’s one of the dumbest things ever....”

This isn't really news because he has said similar things in the past.

He clearly has a system for scouting and evaluating talent especially for identifying diamonds in the rough - Carsen, Haarms, Dakota etc. It also lead to make bad decisions like Weatherford, Hale, Lawson.

Out of anything, Painter isn't like the coaches who strictly target kids because Rivals says they are Top 50 or Top 100 etc.

Granted if you look at the kids he has targeted/offered for 2020 the average rating is 66 (4*) with the highest being Trey Galloway at 200.

Hard to determine those as bad decisions...especially Weatherford. I don't think Weatherford was here to do much of anything else other than develop in to a defensive stopper specialist to bring off the bench to cool down a hot shooter. Imagine if, right now, you had Weatherford to bring off the bench to pair with Nojel in the event a team has two players playing at a high level. It would potentially bring an opposing offense to an absolute halt.

Fair enough - my overall point was that there are kids he targets that check his boxes that don't always pan out. I think the Weatherford situation was probably more complex than we know/knew.

Bad decision might not be the best phrase to use but I am not a wordsmith

I wonder if Weatherford playing with Kyle Guy and Ryan Cline in AAU was "THE" thought? I also credit Hale and Lawson to budget issues leading to them... I don't think Hale and Lawson were near the top of the list for Matt

I also thought Hale and Lawson were projects that were brought in because we simply didn't have enough recruiting budget to pursue better prospects. You will note that since those days of budget constraints, we have had very few "busts". Even Quil, who never played much for us, has finally gotten healthy enough to show some good things.

What year was the start of the new budget? I've seen not enough budget used as an excuse for our last few recruiting classes as well. Was the budget not increased enough when this change took place?

If that class wins a big ten title and makes 3 tournaments - will that make them a success?

I heard that too. Great perspective on the game and on recruiting.

Was that also a shot across the bow of the Hoosier sail boat?

Yep. Can’t wait to hear the real breakdown team story once he leaves (and I bet others transfer out).

2019 class.

Scenario is the make the tournament 3/4 years. 2 years are sweet 16 and the other is 2nd round
It's okay. It's basically where we have been, though. How long is too long to wait for a FF or even an E8?

I will follow up your question with a question. What would your opinion be if Painter were here for the next 20 years, but we never got passed the S16? Let's assume he is at his current pace (2 B1G championships, 1 BTT, and 4 S16 in 13 years), so in the next 20 years we would have 3ish B1G championships, 2 BTT championships, and 7ish S16 appearances. What would your thoughts be on those 20 years?

As you know, I'm not in the fire Painter crowd, but it is my opinion that we need to find a way to recruit at a higher level to reach the E8/FF/NC.

Purdue's basketball budget, as of the latest numbers in summer 2018, is 9th in the Big Ten and not in the top 40 nationally.

When Painter almost left for Mizzou, one of the examples cited as a frustration was RENTAL CAR restrictions that coaches had placed on them by the athletic department. That is the kind of BS that had to be cleared up. It wasn't "big picture" items that made us competitive with Michigan State. That was just 7 years ago! When we would have been starting to recruit guys like Vince Edwards. It's not that long ago.

As of today, Purdue has the smallest basketball staff in the Big Ten.

It's not a make believe talking point, it's reality that we don't invest in the basketball program as we should to be a championship program, within the Big Ten and let alone nationally.

With the Big Ten Network revenue (59 million this year), money should not be an issue. The administration needs to improve the areas you mentioned above.

I want a title just as much as anyone and I think if over the next 10 years the best Painter has done in the tourney is a S16, I would be disappointed.

I honestly believe he is one break away from an elite 8/final 4. I also think he is a tweak or two away from pulling in consistent Top 50 talent on this team.

There are some dynamics that are still changing -- for the good. If I had to answer your question or die, I'd answer that I would not be happy. But I sincerely think that is not going to happen. We're playing a predicting the future game, so it's just as OK for me to say I don't expect it as it is to say what I would feel.

With what's happening in quarryland, Izzo's age, Painter's age, our current incredible chemistry, balance of opp over all positions, high offensive rank, etc, I think every one of those things is pushing our trending improvement. So ... It's worth what it cost ya'

now that we have a new AD
it will be interesting to see the continued changes $ wise

with the tv $, more surplus football $, more AD support...
the program should be on its most solid ground in a long time

I think it will once he is done with football. That I think is in more dire need of funds to finish things off than basketball.

Okay... I'll bite.

"Wait", as in, wait for what reason? You say you're "not in the fire Painter crowd, but ..."

It seems like the only reason to have a deadline for a FF/E8 would be to set a date for termination. If not, what's with the "how long to wait" question?

Should I have said I'm not "currently" in the fire Painter crowd? To answer my own question, I would be very disappointed with the 20 year results I outlined above. As I've stated, in order to get better results, it's my opinion we need to land top end talent. Is that on Painter? His assistants? The Purdue admin? All of the above? I don't care what it would take to fix the issue as long as the issue gets fixed.

I truly believe with better talent Painter would have Purdue as a NC contender every year.

As a side note, Painter may win 5 championships in a row with the current talent level he is bringing in. It's all a guessing game.

Just to be clear, you would FIRE Matt Painter if he doesn't get to the FF or E8 within your arbitrary time frame?

What’s wrong with our last few recruiting classes? I don’t see anything happening on the floor that needs any excuses.
I also don’t recall anyone talking about budget being an issue on recent classes, just those classes that generated the two year hiatus from the tourney.

Your "expecations" are simply unrealistic of most every college basketball team. HARD PERIOD.

I suggest you become a fan of the Patriots or Yankees.
It's unrealistic to expect a perennial top 20 program to make the FF or E8 in the next 20 years? Doesn't seem like that big of a stretch to me.

Budget has been used as an excuse many times even this year (see @lbodel post in this thread).

Our last few recruiting classes have been nice, but they lack the top end talent that push teams over the top come tournament time, imo.

Folks, sometimes you just can't make up this stuff.
Care to expand? I have no interest in getting in a pointless back and forth with you tonight, but if you want to expand on why you disagree, I'm all ears. If we dont get to the FF in the next 20 seasons it will have been 59 years since our last FF.

After reading Ibodel’s post I think he is making a two level statement on budget. He acknowledges that the current budget is better than it was roughly 8 to 10 years back but not as good as the highest end programs today. Kinda similar to recent performance. Very good but not the elite of the game. Actually, it seems like we out perform our budget level.

I was just using that post as an example of budget being used as an excuse. Is it a valid excuse? It might be.

you see nothing but upside, when there's all kinds of downside.

Ask any Illini fan what they'd rather have. (Hint: my guess is, many would take Purdue's success over the past 40 years in a heartbeat.)

Ask fans from any number of college basketball programs who cannot sustain success.

It has nothing to do with settling, or accepting, or any other such b#llsh*t.

It's times like these I'm thankful we have sane people running the athletic department.

You're willing to roll dice at the craps table, with the illusion everything will be better if we just "will" it to be so. Or, demand it. Or, even "expect" it.
