OFF TOPIC Sean Salisbury

Salisbury was on DD and had what I thought was a great quote: “Coaches shouldn’t have to coach effort.”
He said goes for any sport at any level. After watching Braden Smith Friday and Saturday night for Westfield, I thought that comment rang true. He just plays hard and goes balls to the wall all the time. Not a big SS fan but a pretty good outlook on players and teams.

Nice article on Rickie Woltman in the Journal & Courier

Mike Carmin has written a perceptive article on Woltman's emergence this year. Some nice quotes such as Rickie saying “I feel like from the jump, coach Geralds (sic) did a good job of putting the confidence in me and showing me, this is a year where I have an opportunity and she was very vocal about that.”

Once again I am so impressed at what a difference Coach Gearlds has made for many of the players on Purdue's team. We definitely won the lottery in having her on-board to take over when Coach Versyp "retired."

See link. (For those of you who do not subscribe, I think they still allow you a few free articles every month. But really, besides the Exponent whose coverage is spotty at best, it is the only coverage of ALL Purdue sports.)

OFF TOPIC Last Night's Chargers / Raiders game

Not sure how many of you stayed up past midnight to watch this game, but given its playoff implications, I did. Given all that hinged on the outcome, it may have been the most compelling Sunday Night game of the year.

For those who didn't watch, the Raiders and Chargers would have both made the playoffs if the game ended in a tie. If either team won, the winner and the Steelers would go to the playoffs. Toward the end of regulation, the Chargers made one 4th down conversion after another (something like 6 of 7 for the game), and scored the game-tying TD with 0:00 on the clock to send the game to overtime.

The Raiders got the first possession of OT and kicked a FG. The Chargers then also kicked an overtime FG to tie it and give the Raiders one last possession with about 2:00 to go in OT. Their drive stalled around midfield and with about 0:30 to go, it looked like the Raiders were just going to let the clock run out. Again, had that happened, both teams would've made the playoffs, so neither had anything to gain by taking any chances.

For some reason, Brandon Staley (Charger HC) called a timeout when the Raiders had 3rd down and appeared to be ready to just run out the clock. So instead of doing nothing, the Raiders hand the ball to Josh Jacobs, who tears off about 20 yards and puts the Raiders in FG range. They make the winning kick as time expires, sending themselves and the Steelers to the playoffs.

For those who watched, do you think the Raiders were just going to sit on the ball and run out the clock prior to Staley's timeout?

Purdue versus rest of state in Football

How much money could you have made in August had you bet that out of all the NFL and FBS college teams in Indiana, that Purdue would be the only one to win a post season game?

You had the Hoosiers coming off their two best seasons in a row. Ball State had a historical season. Notre Dame is Notre Dame and the Colts acquired Wentz.

Or that Purdue would have just as many wins as the Colts? Or Purdue would have more wins that Ball State and IU combined? Or that Strickland would sack Allen?

Williams is carrying us...

Never would have predicted it. Seems nice to have his experience when the rest of the team is floundering on offense. Williams and Gillis. Didn't see that one coming.
Now how many great defensive plays has Williams made away from the basket? A lot. Who said he is too immobile to play the four. I say, wrong. Add to that Gillis being our best or second best shooter (with Newman in his funk)... Edey, Williams, Gillis at the 3, Stephanovic, Ivey. Lets try it. Current defense is not holding up anyway. Rebounding the last few games has been suspect too. PG play has been our weakness. Need to try something to get back to preseason. If it fails, we are back where we started. What if it works???

NCAA Tournament vs NIT Tournament (The True National Champion)

I have read much on this debate. What was the 1st year the NCAA Tournament winner was considered the "true" National Champion of college basketball (greater than the NIT winner)? I have heard anywhere from 1951 - 1970.
I have heard it was a gradual shift in prestige, but what year would you all say? Thanks! And a family member told me
Ohio State in 1960.
