Entire Johnny Davis Scoring Sequence

ThaDoc among others pinned Morton on this. Here is the sequence after I carefully re-watched the entire game. You can make your own judgements:

Miss good pressure by Ivey
Miss decent pressure by Ivey
Make off a odd bounce on a rebound
Miss way off on a 3
Make on a step back over Ivey
Layup off a EH T/O
Miss Gillis good D
Make off a long rebound scramble; good shot fake to get away from Gillis
Miss over Sasha
Make layup off a live ball T/O
Miss over Ivey/Gillis
Miss good D by Ivey
1 FT after a foul on Ivey
Make over IT
Miss good D by Morton
1 FT after foul by Morton
2 FT after Davis beats Ivey
Make fade away over Hunter
Make tough fade away over Morton
Make 3 over Ivey NBA move
2 FT foul on Tre
Make tough pull up over Morton
1 FT foul on IT
Miss good D by Morton
Miss good D by Morton
2 FT made fouled by Morton
Made 3 on that skip pass where Morton was helping in the lane
Make tough shot over both Gillis and Morton
Miss air ball 3 over Ivey
Made layup on the scramble at the end

All I will add is I wonder if some people even really watch the games with any sort of critical eye towards what really transpires.

Adapting to the talent

Coach Painter has been praised by many for his willingness to change his offense based on the talent he has. Pound it inside one year then let Carsen launch at will from deep the next year. Then back to pounding it inside. I agree with them.

What I do not see is any change in defensive philosophy based on talent he has. We obviously do not have a shut down defender and playing more games has not and will not produce one this season. They continue to be exposed defensively by penetration by skilled opponents. It appears that opponents take advantage of the switching defense until they get a mismatch to their advantage.

I am not a coach and am not claiming to have answers but I also have seen too many games where they get exposed because the defense cannot stop penetration and yes “mid range jumpers” several times in a row during crunch time. Kind of a definition of insanity thing by the defense.

Shrewsberry has been lauded because he threw many different defensive looks at Purdue. Hmmmm?

Broc Thompson

Absolutely deserves his own thread.

Considering the circumstances one of the gutsiest performances from a Purdue player I can remember. Only practicing once a week and having two knee surgeries after the season? If anyone had reason to sit this one out and prepare for next season it was him but instead he guts it out and puts up a legendary Purdue performance.

What a game.

Purdue women's basketball First Thoughts and GoldandBlack.com game thread: Purdue at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Good morning, everyone, from the Bryce Jordan Center here in State College, where No. 3 Purdue meets Micah Shrewsberry and Penn State for an afternoon special.

I'm in a bit of a hurry, so my thoughts will be brief. But this is a big game for Purdue, an opportunity to bounce back from a disappointing loss that may or many have revealed some real existential issues for this outstanding team.

• Purdue simply has to defend better. That doesn't mean dominating defensively. It means just looking more engaged and more cohesive. Someone out there has to take charge. You need to hear voices and you need to see engagement.

These teams that can spread you, out, dribble and shoot from the 4 hit on a lot of Purdue's pressure points, so there might be some real matchup challenges here, too.

• Do things with a purpose. Lost in the story of the Wisconsin game was how Purdue's turnovers and the offensive rebounds they allowed buoyed Wisconsin, especially in the first half.

Trevion Williams, especially, has got to block out John Harrar. Has to.

I do anticipate a change to the starting five. I think they're going back to Edey today. Williams' approach to defense and blocking out against Wisconsin was part of the calculus there, I'd strongly suspect.

That's what I've got. Big game for Purdue, after which they probably get some time off. With Michigan's COVID issues, here's guessing that that one's gonna go by the wayside.
