Walters has been a disaster. That doesn’t mean the next coach is going to have the players he needs to be good. Better than Walters? I’m pretty sure the front desk lady at my hotel might have a chance to do better.
Minnesota likely does have better NIL but they definitely have a better high school base. They are it in Minneapolis which produces good talent.
Purdue fans are in denial about Nil
That’s why when the next coach is hired I need to get people on record talking about how they love the hire.
Last year the narrative was that Walters had to nuke the roster to bring in talent for his system. Now the narrative is that there’s no upperclassmen talent left and that’s on Brohm.
Which is it?
You have to plug holes via the portal but still need to develop guys. Walters hasn’t done either. Couple that with horrendous coaching from about every aspect and a team as fundamentally sound as pee wee leaguers - you get what we see.
I didn’t like the hire because it was antithetical to the things that have made Purdue successful in the past. I gave the guy a chance but the Syracuse game was the last straw. A team we were clearly more talented than just running the same play over and over and us not being able to stop it.
That’s when I knew this team was rudderless. That’s when I knew this scheme didn’t work. The offense disappearing completely and then reappearing again was all I needed to see.
The next guy gets some leeway that Walters didn’t because he’s walking into 5-19 and not 17-8 like Walters did. Walters took a pretty good foundation and ****ed it up. It wasn’t perfect by any means but there was enough here to build from and be successful if you knew what you were doing.
I’m not mad about it. I don’t like Walters but I appreciate that he’d take the job and try. Time to flush this experiment and try to forge our way successfully in the new NIL era. Talking about NIL in reference to this staff is a perfect storm combo of pissing into the wind while lighting cash on fire. Walters could have gotten as much as OSU did in NIL money and we’d still be terrible.
