Berg

Berg is to slow, I said it last season, his foot speed is lacking, athletic centers will eat him up. At this point he’s a 5-10 minute a game player, he has some skills but he’s limited. I’ll be honest, might be best for Will if he plays his last two seasons elsewhere at a lower level. Not saying he should be forced out, just think it might be the best move for him.
Are you one that thinks Furst brings so much more by chance? I haven't seen it and Iv'e pretty much only missed the Marquette game. Having one put back per game is NOTHING to give him more minutes than the others. I do not think Berg is any slower than other guys I have watched this season his size. Like I said, ALL of our BIGS HAVE TO GET BETTER, but I am strictly talking what one might bring over the other. LET ME BE CLEAR! I LOVE PURDUE BASKETBALL AND I WANT THEM ALL TO SUCCEED!

I disagree. I don't think relying on DJ, who's not ready physically, was a good gamble.
I also think that it's the coaches job to constantly be looking to upgrade. Last year, we had a high volume shooter/scorer come in and become a really important piece of a FF team.
These guys know there's no guarantees and it's Painters job to win, not keep guys happy.
I cannot imagine DJ in that game. There were some big bullies playing very well.

Berg

Maybe this has been asked as I haven't been on here for a few weeks or so, but Why is Berg not playing more? I don't think you can honestly say " because he isn't playing well", or you would have to say that about the other two. I do not think Furst does anything more while he is in. If he does I haven't seen it. Not trying to bash the guy, just trying to compare as to why he would get a few more minutes. All the bigs have to get better, but Burgess I would give the most rope to for mistakes, as he is the youngest.

IMO he’s our most efficient low post scoring weapon. I keep reading others opinions about how he’s not at the same level as others, but all I see is that he makes upwards of 90% of his shots under the basket. He doesn’t get many minutes, so I don’t know why they don’t just pound it in the inside when he’s in there, and at least take advantage of him on the offensive side of the ball.

Out: (15)Illinois, (18)Memphis, (19)Pittsburgh, (25)Louisville
I'm fine with Purdue at 18 but there are some logical inconsistencies here. I don't understand how Oregon lost to UCLA (14 Kenpom) at home and beat USC (93 KP) and dropped two spots and Purdue lost on the road to PSU (33 KP) and beat Maryland (19 KP) and dropped seven spots. I believe Purdue actually went up in KP in the last week to #12. UCLA at 8-1 beats Oregon on the road and only moves to 23 despite being 14 in KP.

It also seems that you're significantly moving up teams who haven't lost a game or didn't lose this week while ignoring their strength of schedule and whether they've beaten anyone good. That's certainly your prerogative but Oklahoma (42 KP), Arizona State (50 KP). Drale (76 KP) all in your top 15 seem like reaches.

UNLV Interim not OC

Is it possible Walters would come back as the DC? Walters was a great recruiter.

I’m unsure how successful Odom will be in bringing those left back into the fold.

I will say having a .500 record in the SEC is a pretty worthy accomplishment
His scheme doesn’t work here or at any level.

People forget that he ran Odoms system at Mizzou and that Bielema wouldn’t let him implement his full system at Illinois.

The only 2 years he was actually in charge of the scheme were a disaster. I’d pass

2025 QBs

Assuming we have Marion coming, it would seem Browne is perfect in his system. Browne said he would come back depending on new coach. Sawyer committed and he’s a good fit too. Marcus Davila seems interested so if he stays and Odom brings his son we will be at 4 QBs, 5 if Meredith stays. I also expect Mockobee is kicking his chops and we have 2 good RB recruits and I hope marion brings one with (plus they have 2 of their own recruits). WR not as important. Our offense is not that far off, just need to go out and get some really good OL.
These players that enter the portal then just don’t come back. They want out so just say goodbye. If they don’t get a better offer then we know why they want to come back.

Braden Just Good

Well yea he's good. Kinda why he was picked by many to be POY in the B1G. Still has some things to clean up(jumps to pass too much like Yogi used to and gets caught). Definitely needs to be way more aggressive scoring. Purdue isn't going to win big if he's scoring 6 points. Purdue isn't going to win big if Smith is outplayed by the opposite point guard. And there aren't many who are capable on any given night in the B1G. Baldwin is one. Myles Rice, Jeremy Fears and a couple others but those guys gotta be on it for the night. Purdue will go as Smith goes and that's been the feeling before the season even started and it hasn't changed. Would just like to see him be aggressive scoring from the tip. I get he wants to get everyone involved but I'd rather see him set the tone by his aggression and that aggression will more easily feed to others and getting others open.

Purdue football Question marks after Purdue hires Barry Odom

Three biggest question marks following Purdue hiring Barry Odom as next head coach.

🚂 Can in-portal talent be lured back?
❓ Who follows Odom?
📈 Go-Go offense coming to West Lafayette?

With Walter's dismissal...

Because I was trying to understand if the lack of offense productivity was a result of a poor OC or was it the HC micromanaging of the OC in such a way that didn't allow the OC to run the offense the way he wanted. It feels like the HC brought in an OC that he didn't really know and never develop the needed chemistry (trust).

The OC may be quality offensive-minded person who did not work out for Purdue. I was not suggesting that HC Odom bring GH back as his OC, only trying to understand why it didn't work.

Obviously, HC Odom will bring in coordinators he is comfortable with and feel that he can win with, which I believe is the key in all this--strong trust between HC and DC/OC.
If a coach wasn’t gonna let OC run offense like he wanted, why would he be hired in the first place and why stay, especially when offense was bad

Maryland did not commit to taking Smith out of the game as PSU and Marquette did. I'm guessing their coach didn't feel they had the personnel to do that. The true measure of Smith will be how does he do in games going forward where teams do commit to that strategy. I don't think I've seen anyone dumping on Smith in any of these threads, at least not any of the regular posters. I feel it's more a matter of some of us saying an AA PG has to do it when the other team is focused on taking him out. It has proven effective by teams that have tried it this season. Let's see what he does going forward. Thankfully, not every team is structured to implement that strategy. But we will face some teams coming up very soon that will.

Agree. But with no space last year, next year is all that matters, and if a couple guys aren't found, that's coaching malpractice. This team can be upgraded at the 5 for sure. Availability of physicalality would help at several positions.

With Walter's dismissal...

No clue why people do this. There are hundreds of other OCs out there. Why do you immediately want to retread and hire a guy who clearly didn’t work here?

It doesn’t matter why it didn’t work…it’s time to move on.
