Northwestern at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

This is one where I think Purdue’s non-confernce schedule pays off. Northwestern is never easy, but being at home should result in a Purdue win. They will try to be physical and muck it up, but after playing 4 grown men SEC teams Purdue should be ready for the challenge.

Will students be back?

Oh, and Thank God Boo is gone too.

Students still aren't back and potential weather issues from what I understand.

Northwestern at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Like this Nick Martinelli kid. Type of kid we need up front. One to watch today.

Sometimes a nightmare when these 2 former Lafayette kids come back to WL. Hope they have nice games in a LOSS.

Yeah - Barnhizer nearly had a triple double at Penn State. As much as I like to give Collins deserved grief, the guy can coach. 5th yr player, Ty Berry, is capable of hurting Purdue as well.

IU did not deserve to be in CFP. Great article by USA Today

Lead a team to 11-2, a playoff appearance and one of the probably the Top 10 QBs in the nation... Yea that's miraculous.
Dude it was a partial tear and it was so minimal the coaching staff never even noticed. I bet if everyone had an mri on the team at the end of every season you would probably see a lot of partial tears. It’s a feel good story but not a miracle

Northwestern at Purdue: MASTER DISCUSSION THREAD

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today, the Northwestern Wildcats (10-4; 1-2) visit Mackey Arena to take on the #20-ranked Purdue Boilermakers (10-4; 2-1). Tip is scheduled for around 2:00 pm (Eastern time) with television coverage on the Big Ten Network. This is the only scheduled regular season match-up between the schools. Last season, the teams split the season series, each winning at home in overtime. Matt Painter Purdue teams are 22-9 overall against Northwestern.

Projected Starting Line-ups:

Northwestern - Nick Martinelli, Matthew Nicholson, Jalen Leach, Ty Berry, and Brooks Barnhizer

Purdue - Trey Kaufman-Renn, Caleb Furst, CJ Cox, Fletcher Loyer, and Braden Smith

__________________________________

Northwestern is coming off a close road loss at The Tomb to Penn State, 84-80, which halted a four-game winning streak for the Wildcats. Brooks Barnhizer had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists in the losing effort. Purdue is on a two-game win steak coming off a win Thursday night at Minnesota, 81-61, including 53 points and no turnovers in the second half of the winning effort.

Similar to Purdue, Northwestern has a strong core of players who have been in their program for a while. Nick Martinelli, a 6'7 junior, leads the team with 20.1 PPG and also averages 5.7 rebounds per game. After missing four games earlier this season, Brooks Barnhizer has been a key contributing force, also averaging 20.1 PPG and a team-high 9.5 rebounds. Northwestern is the only school with two players averaging 20+ points per game. Northwestern is currently 47th in the KenPom ratings, 75th in offensive efficiency but a strong 21st in the defensive rating. They are one of the few teams Purdue will play with a slower adjusted tempo rating in KenPom at 318th to Purdue's 302nd. After the Minnesota game, Purue's overall rating has moved up to 21st overall, 11th offensively and 69th defensively.

These two teams have had some tight battles recently. Last season both meetings went into overtime, and six of the last seven meetings have been with-in six points after regulation. All of Northwestern's losses this season to Dayton, Butler, Iowa and Penn State have been by five points or less, and you'd expect this is likely going to be a slugfest in the same manner that each of the last several matchups has been. Plus, Northwestern is just 335th in the nation in made 3-pt FG's, and it is 341st in 3-pt FG attempts - this will be a battle inside the arc, and Purdue will absolutely need to battle on the glass and limit NW's second chance opportunities. They are also top ten in limiting turnovers, while Purdue isn't in the top 100, although recently the Boilers have improved - they will need a performance more like the last time out where they had just three.

Look for the same starting line-up, and if Purdue can get the kind of game it had from Caleb Furst (11 points and six rebounds) in battling Nicholson and company, that will be welcomed support for Smith, Kaufman-Renn, and Loyer on the offensive end going up against a good defensive team. On defense, Purdue will certainly need to focus on Barnhizer and Martinelli, but that can come with a cost as well. Coach Matt Painter on that dilemma - "Sometimes when you go against guys that can really really score, you can load up on them. If you load up on those guys they'll make you pay with their ability to pass....They're play starters....And they're play finishers."

This impending battle is a key game for Purdue to stay in touch with near the top of the conference. Can the Boilers keep things on track and build more momentum with a trip to Rutgers looming next week? We shall see starting in a couple of hours or so....

Boiler up, my friends.

got another qb from portal

Re: Browne

How much do you think he could have possibly been paid to go to UNC? While I was high on Browne, I can't see anyone paying him much based on how little he played. I dont know UNCs QB situation, but I'm guessing Browne is far from just being given the starting job. Maybe UNC has gobs of money to give everyone?
Money might of not been the final factor but I bet it helped his decision.
Most portal players are over recruited so when you add in NIL money the rest is history.

The miracle is IU buying an entire new team and buying a pud schedule to get to the playoffs. It is a miracle that people didn't see through the record for what it was. They won't be fooled again. LOL

Purdue -6.5

He wasn't good enough. He's really developed at NW.

While he did have a nice FR to Sophomore jump.....him not being good enough is really not accurate. He was one of the several finalists for IN Mr. basketball and averaged 32+ and 11R & 6+A. We watched him, but were full with other players we recruited. He was not recruited hard as CMP felt Furst who did win Mr. BB & TKR were better. Had we had multiple...like 4, scholarships that year, he likely would have been a Boiler.... Similar to why Goode is not a Boiler.

Big Ten

Hopefully, you are being sarcastic - as we only SAW 26 minutes in real games. Alot of potential, but yes really only hopeful expectations at this time. Mostly hopeful he can make it through a full year next year with added strength.
Expectations probably driven more by what he did in USA BB than what we saw in preseason. Agree with OP that it would be great to hear that he’s put in 15 to 20 lbs of muscle by the end of March.

All Five Conference Champs Lost Their First Game In The Playoff

Give a guaranteed spot to each P4 and G5 conference champ, but teams are seeded by their ranking and not by being a conf champ.

IMO: the NFL should follow the same advice. No more ~.500 teams getting a home playoff game as a reward for winning a weak division. Meanwhile, the loser of today's Lions/Vikings game will fall from the #1 to the #5 seed with a 14-3 record.
