Coronavirus Data

OK, sadly, things are trending up again.

As of 3pm today, 6 states (WV, Montana, ND, SD, IN, OH) have recorded a record number of daily new cases and 6 other states (Iowa, OK, Minne, Wis, Illinois, Nebraska) are either 2nd or 3rd highest for their state (this will technically be the 5th highest for Illinois, but it is second highest since May).

Back in late July, we were hitting the 60,000 cases per day level, but around half of that was from 3 states (California, Texas, Florida). We are now back into the 60k level, but it is more evenly distributed (those three states are only reporting a total of about ~10,000 cases now).

Not sure if this is because people are getting lax with the masking / social distancing or if this is a bump from Labor Day / Schools starting.

i’m not sure why the link you provided is so low ... where do they get the data ... from WHO?
First, call it a hunch, but the fact that the data provided in his link is from October 8th, not the 9th, might have something to do with it.

Second, I'll take the Statista link and raise you:

Johns Hopkins: 56,191

The CDC: 54,887

and Worldometer: 60,419

Regardless of us quibbling as to what the final number is, the point is the same regardless. We were on a downward trend from the peak in the middle of July to September 9th, and since then we've been trending upward again. TSB's data says the same thing. Even using his site, we've gone from 23,000 on September 10th to 49000 a little over three weeks later.

any multi day average is nowhere near 60k. the rest of the world is also trending up a bit.

Click on the Worldometer link.
Look at the bottom of the "Daily New Cases in the United States" chart.
Click the "3-day moving average" line.
Look at October 9th.

See the 55,523 value.

Yeah, it's not 60k, but it's also not "nowhere near" either.

Yup. The rest of the world is trending up too. France and the UK are announcing new restrictions. While I care about that, I care more about what is happening here. I really don't want to have to shut down again, But I live in Ohio, and it is confirmed that we set a new record for number of daily new cases here today. So if an area is about to be shut down again, I might be in it.

Yeah, i really didn’t want to get into a pissing match over which data source was best.

i follow the twitter link I provided above because it updates every day and provides nice, easy to read graphics. I’m pretty sure its the same source as Johns Hopkins and I’ve even seen the White House use it as a source.

Really odd how close these numbers are to prior numbers. Almost like the numbers are made up. Auditor in me is screaming red flags seeing the same numbers over and over.

Months ago experts said tracking new cases was not the way to measure progress or lack of progress.

has anyone noticed that the amount of testing in the US has almost doubled in the last 6 months? Does anyone remember in the Spring being told that the goal at that time was to ”flatten the curve”? Treatment improvements even without a vaccine have improved greatly and as a result deaths and serious cases have dropped and are continuing to drop. MSM and the Dems are sensationalizing this for profit and political purposes. Of course this is a deadly virus and it will be with us for a long long time. Wear your damn masks and wash you hands and go on with life.

If worldometer's info is accurate, Indiana is reporting 2800+ new cases today. I agree that new case counts are not the be-all-end-all of measuring our success against this bug, but a 3x increase in daily cases from the Thursday 4 weeks ago is alarming regardless.

3,643 in Indiana today plus 6 legacy cases attributed to recent days for a total of 3,649.

Jeez, the left wingers let this thread get to page two.

FOR SHAME!!!!!

With that said, it's looking to be another really bad day. Several states reporting record cases today. Looking like a 110k to 115k day.

Stay safe out there everybody. I know that we are getting major fatigue about the mask wearing and social distancing, but don't let your guard down. It's only going to get worse for a few months now that the outdoor activities are going to going to start to become limited.

I just saw a headline that a student at an Indiana university died in her dorm room of Covid??? Have not yet looked at the article.

Let's just remind ourselves that a 45k 18-24 yo kids in West Lafayette have managed to keep this virus at bay for the last 2.5 months by following the leadership guidance which outlined excellent, scientifically backed procedures (including fervent mask wearing) while all around them -- their parents and other grown adults have failed spectacularly.

Good job kids! Way to be an example for the older generations.

Proud of Purdue students as I have read that other Big Ten schools are having real problems (Iowa, Michigan state, Wisconsin, Michigan) controlling spread of Corona Virus

I'm waiting for the next Trump fan (not TSB) to chime in saying why all this data is still wrong or we're counting wrong. Seems like they've kinda given up that fight... maybe the reality that set in for most of us eight months ago has finally set in for most of them? Maybe the fact that it didn't just "go away" after the election was enough to show that it's not a hoax?

I don’t know anyone who thinks Covid is a hoax.

I do know folks who think the MSM blew Covid way out of proportion to further their goal of installing one of their own in the White House.

Will be interesting to see how the final 2020 mortality rate compares to 2019.

Seriously? You can already look at that on the CDC website. It’s unquestionably higher well beyond standard deviation.

And there were plenty of Trumpers on this forum predicting COVID-19 would just go away after the election. It is dominating headlines, deaths and cases are higher than ever. It has nothing - NOTHING - to do with politics until you start looking at how governments have handled it. California has gone high and right. Many states haven’t done enough, IMO. And a vaccine isn’t going to magically make it go away in a few weeks. We still have to distance and wear masks for several more months.
