Yanni Wetzel visit?

Just to put my 2 cents in why the transfer is not a two way street between D1 and DII...you would have D1 teams stashing players at DII schools and then getting them back without having to wait a year. It would be like a minor league farm system for them to get experience and return immediately eligible!

By now Painter has a pretty good read on who's coming our way the next two years with our new Asst. so I will trust their judgement if they offer and get him for only two years on the court!

I think he looks very impressive. Great mobility, footwork. Great touch for such a big kid. And I think the tennis ability does matter. Any sport highlighting footwork (soccer and tennis, particularly) will have an advantageous effect on foot speed and coordination.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is correct but how exactly does one come up with such an empirical statement?

The empirical evidence is that he's 7'2. That's 7-foot-2. Maybe we have the first 7'2 perimeter player in the history of the sport, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that we won't be seeing Haarms chasing the likes of Miles Bridges around the perimeter at the 4 spot next season.

Yanni is the type of kid that usually ends up in a place like Nebraska...surprised Purdue is looking @ him really?

But it does show me what MP thinks of the prospect of Haarms and our beloved Jacquil Taylor as back up 5s in the future.
All we know, from what I can tell, is that Purdue is looking at him. How you draw any conclusions about Taylor or Haarms by that is beyond me. If anything, offering a transfer as opposed to an immediately eligible player could be seen as a vote of confidence in the two for this upcoming season.

I'm also not convinced that Wetzel would primarily play the 5 for Purdue. If he has good lateral quickness, he could play the 4.

The only real 5 I see is Haas, but you don't have to play with a 5...especially in the game today...IMO, but you may have to guard a 5? So, the others will be allowed to float out more on the perimeter. I see advantages with Matt sticking with pure 5's from a recruiting poiint of view (contrarian )and I see teh game going more to two fours that can make quick posts and yet live on the perimeter as well. I think of pure 5's as back to the basket and 4's as being able to do that and face the basket and put it on the court some. I would hate to see Wetzel if offered stuck with his back to the basket. I would rather he be out in space where he can drive the ball and if they drop off hit the jumper..."IF" he is offered.

I definitely could imagine him creating some matchup problems at the 5 if he could guard the position.

I think we are saying the same thing, but I look at him as a 4 relative to offense and guard either a 4 or 5 on D. I think we agree that his quick step would be a plus and his ability to stroke it out a bit sets up his quick step...whereas I see a true 5 mostly back to the basket and maybe a jumper out to 15, but not generally able to put the ball on the court. I think we are seeing some same advantages offensively...

As he did with the last class, I think Painter is trying to to create flexibility in the roster with guys that can play multiple positions and create match up problems..........play more uptempo or halfcourt. It also allows him to change things up defensively and have some bigs that can guard away from the basket. Being able to play two fours or go more traditional with a strong defender like Dowuona at the 5 looks like a good way to go.

I would agree Yanni may be better than some other 3* big men - maybe - but not off some 3-5 minute highlight video and because he's a former tennis player. I'd need to read some actual analysis and also see what other schools are interested in him. I don't believe in diamonds in the rough. Surely, some other coach has seen him play. has anybody else given him an offer?

what hasn't been said is that while Painter requested Yanni to visit, he didn't give him an offer. And he just gave out 4 offers over the weekend - two of them to 2018 BIG men. if Painter really liked this guy, he would have given him an offer before he visits.

Totally lost in this thread is that Purdue's tennis team made the NCAA tournament this year. They are ranked 53d, but hey, they made the dance !

"For the record, I'm a huge Painter defender. I don't think it's unfair to say Painter needs to recruit better.......and I think he's getting there. The history lesson isn't necessary..........and it's disingenuous to mention 5 stars with the 4. Haven't got many, but I'm not hung up on 5 stars..."

Whaaaaaaaaaat?!

Most of us would have never guessed that, Coach Paint-, I mean "BuilderBob6".

^^^ perfect evidence of a 'hater'. You start calling people 'Coach Painter' or some other nonsense when you have no real substance for an argument.

Keep going though nag, you're very close to kesselschmecks level of being mocked on here.

I have no informed opinion on Yanni other than the little I've seen and what I've already said. However, I can't imagine any coach not wanting two players like Wagner and Wilson...both versatile, can put the ball on the court, go inside and out and cause other teams defensive problems. I would love to have bookends like that and suspect most coaches would. Then again, I've been on record for a long while with my preference of two really good 4's instead of a 4 and 5 on the offensive end.
He's fantastic on a piano. Known as the Greek freak. I celebrate his entire collection.

Very true Ghost...and one I honestly had not thought of. Just think it is still silly to allow a guy to transfer 'down' and get to play immediately. Not real fair to the guys that may have busted their ass and made a decision based on a D1 talent not getting unhappy and transferring down simply because he wants to dominate or play more.

for some reason, I don't think he was PLAN A. and I believe Painter was honest and informed him. I have to believe that was also the reason other BIG men like Ondigo signed elsewhere. He would have been an Ok player, but ot the featured player and perhaps not even a starting player. it appears his career at Purdue might have been like Willis at Kentucky a nice kid providing depth off the bench. Vandy probably provided him a chance to start. if I'm a recruit, I can't keep waiting for other recruits or for biggie to make a decision. Other schools want an answer NOW.

I'm kind of surprised how many 2017 players and transfers are still looking and waiting.
