I think this is the year we do better against the press. We lost Octeus, but gained Hill + Biggie, a very good passing big. And if Cline doesn't redshirt I could see him helping with the press along with Mathias; both have very good passing & court vision.
In hockey a good team has its set of people who neutralize the power play, and they practice it quite a bit. We need the same IMO for beating the press. Maybe some guys (e.g. Basil, Jacquil) who will likely see fewer minutes than they would prefer should try to get good at press breaking.
To me, it's about quick safe passing, being mentally ahead of the defense, and confidence + good technique when trapped with the ball. Ideally, you attack & make the other team pay for taking the risk of pressing. Yes, you need quickness and ball handling, but it is the passing, teamwork, and coolness under pressure that makes a big difference (exception: having one super quick guy who can get past the press on his own).
As soon as you have a game or two where the press gave you trouble, I think it becomes a specter that negatively impacts the confidence part every time, so I would advocate practicing beating the press early in the season to improve the odds that we will beat it with no problems the first couple times we see it.
