Between, coaches, players, facilities and maybe the most important.... fan base. What's not to like about Purdue? From an IU fan
I’m reminded of the time Larry Bird was coaching the Pacers and the camera was on him. The Pacers made a huge bucket and Bird’s facial expression didn’t change a bit. He was still thinking and coaching. I’ve seen Painter do that too. Never too up, never too down. Just coaching the next play.I say this all the time... what I admire about Matt Painter is he is always under control. I love the Keady era, but it was a different era. We knew Keady was looking out for our guys, he was ranting like a madman on the sidelines, I knew he was passionate and cared. He didn't belittle or yell at his players, it was almost always arguing calls and fighting for his team. Sometimes I want more of that from Painter... but in reality... we DO NOT. I can't control my cursing from my couch, I lack the self discipline and personality not to act like an ass when we are losing. Painter is nails. Always calm and his players can trust him and count on him and he is focused on the next play, not the last one. He is authentic to his core and I am so proud he is our coach. I hope he doesn't retire (20 or 30 years from now hopefully) without at least a Final Four (hopefully a National Title) but even if (like Keady) he does, he (again, like Coach Keady) is our ride or die for the rest of their career. I wouldn't have any one else in the county. He is OUR GUY.
Additionally, remember all of the above and remind me when I (we) get frustrated after a loss or bouncing out after a Sweet 16.... would you really trade 40+ years of this elite-level basketball from Keady and Painter for a one-off, slimy, snake oil coach that blows through Purdue and gets us over the hump once and leaves and then we have 5 different coaches in 15 years? Purdue is doing it the right way. Period. AND, it will make a Final Four SO much more enjoyable to have had to wait for it and do it this way.
Jay Wright did this too. Watch his expression when Jenkins hits a three to win the national championship. If ever there was a time to break character, that was it.I’m reminded of the time Larry Bird was coaching the Pacers and the camera was on him. That video of Larry was on last night, on Reggie’s shot to beat the Bulls in the 98 ECF. The Last Dance documentary. Totally worth the 10 hours and I’m very fortunate to have watched all those Bulls games live.I’m reminded of the time Larry Bird was coaching the Pacers and the camera was on him. That’s the last one I can remember. He did it for the team though. When is the last time painter got a tech? The only time I can really think of is that Illinois game years ago when he was thrown out.
I seem to remember Painter having an epic meltdown toward the end of a loss to Indiana State in his first or second season. He later talked about learning from that. When is the last time painter got a tech? The only time I can really think of is that Illinois game years ago when he was thrown out.
