Why does Purdue suck in the postseason so much?

Serious question. Why does Purdue always underachieve come postseason? Some on here say painter then others blame the players. It's the same old crap every year. Missed free throws, bad turnovers, not having that killer instinct. What needs to be done to change this?

He is very predictable. Easy to scout and any decent coach will have a plan for them. Hope to hell no one presses us in the first round.

Have a coach that plays 1 style, never changes defense and doesn't know when to sub players. Very vanilla and easy to scout as 8285 said.

No clue. Watching these games you can almost hear the team get tight, like the sound of a rope ready to snap. The tentative passes. Guys afraid to shoot. Angering.

I agree, they do play tight come post season. When do you see them shoot ft so poorly or make dumb mistakes? Does painter need to change his approach?

As a Purdue fan, in tournament play, I am sick and tired of losing to Purdue. One of these days we will have a tougher minded SOB of a player that goes and gets the ball and makes drives to the basket and all their free throws in the last minutes of tournament games. Refuses to lose. Doesn't allow it to happen. A great regular season but I wish the season would just end at the end of February.

I have been thinking about this quite a bit...actually probably too much! I look at Villanova last year and how they won the tournament. I don't think they had the most talent, but they had the strongest belief in themselves that they could actually pull it off. Everyone on the team seemed to step up and came ready to play every game. Players played to their potential and didn't let any negativity sink in. Therefore they played great and didn't get tight. I know the competition was not very good, but when I watched how we played against ASU earlier in the year, I saw the potential we had to play like Nova, if we just come to play and have some swagger!

Before last season, Villanova had struggled in the NCAA tournament for several years.

They went to the FF in 2009

We think a like buddy but what's the answer? I want this to change

I think they need a sports psychologist to work with the team.
You got PJ hitting half court shots but missing game winning free throws.

This was also the 10th time DM had a game tying/winning shot that he has missed.

No amount of counseling will help us.

If you think 2 FF's in 7 years is a large gap, how long have you been a Purdue fan?

And none of the years in between did they even make the second weekend including 2011-2012 where they went 13-19 and missed the tournament. Just proves that there is far more to it than just a coach having "it" or not. Bo Ryan went a long time at Wisconsin before breaking through too.

I think we have different definitions of success. I would trade CMP's for either of those guys in a heartbeat. If you wouldn't, then your kidding yourself.

First of all, neither of those guys is coming to Purdue even if we wanted them. Second, the point you fail to grasp is that a coach, even a very good one, can have a stretch of poor NCAA tournaments and still get there.

Man, I do too! Actually, I think it starts with one or two players playing above their norm and then other players feeding off of it. Like when we are hitting our 3's, it seems like all of the sudden everyone starts hitting their 3s. Especially at home! Somehow, we need to figure out how to do this on a neutral court like we did against ASU. I think Carsen is very competitive and is the kind of guy that could get us going in this fashion. At least today it seemed to me that he is used to playing in a tournament atmosphere and had no fear! Probably from all his success and experience as a high school player in the State Championship. I would also like to see a little more positive emotion from Painter, I think that might jump start the guys! I am sure Painter doesn't read this forum, but if he did I would tell him, never criticize your team publically if you win. He did exactly that against Penn State, when he said Penn State outworked us and that we were basically lucky to win. I didn't think so, and even if it were true, I don't think you should ever take away anything from your team when they win. At least not publically! In my opinion, team chemistry especially in March should be maximized whenever possible! One more thing, I would give Spike more chances to contribute, I think he is ready to shine if given the chance.

12 years of no success is enough for me. If your trying to tell me Wisconsin was a better job than Purdue when Bo took over, I'm not buying it. Bo was not some well known commodity everyone was after. Purdue could have easily made the same hire. I don't think Nova was a better job at the time either.

Wisconsin was in the Final Four in 2000 and Bo Ryan took over in 2001.

You've got to have some high level talent/arrogance in your guards. Thompson and Mathias have not had the kind of lifelong success that allows them to be confident when the lights get real bright. I think Carson Edwards has the swagger to perform well under pressure next year and beyond. So will Eastern.

wasn't a better job than Purdue. He wasn't even their first choice. majerius turned them down if I remember right. They also had an intern coach the year before. Can't remember his name. Purdue was in the E8 that same year and lost to Wisky. If you think it's a better job than Purdue, then you have a really low opinion of Purdue.

agree with the comments thus far. Sorry for the long post, but this 30+ year fan of Purdue basketball is in the mood. :) Prize for anyone who actually reads all of this.

We are playing NOT to lose, with the weight of history on our backs and the weight of a fan base that is craving a Final Four like no other fan base.

We need to remember to GO FOR IT! It's not going to happen by being passive. To play for EACH OTHER. To only care what the people in that locker room think. Get in that FOXHOLE with each other and just f'n FIGHT as hard as you can and leave it all out there on the court! Win or lose you can live with that attitude. I think Biggie's attitude is aligned with this and different from boiler past. He isn't meek or afraid. He goes for it. Hopefully, everyone else can follow that lead with their mindset.

It's HOW we lose that hurts more than the actual losing. And today was par for the course. Usually, it's a tough, grind it out game where it's close in the end and anyone's game ... and then we lose in the most stomach wrenching way. To boot, our coaching since 1980 is the EASIEST team to plan against because there is ZERO element of surprise. We might as well just hand over our playbook for the season to the opposition. It's ridiculous. (85 - Auburn, 88 - Kansas St, 90 - Texas, 93 - Rhode Island, 95 - Memphis - roy hairston pulled jersey, 96 - georgia and almost lost in 1st round, 12 - Kansas, Cincy, ARK LR)

And for the love of God, please do NOT wear those throwback jerseys. Let's turn the page on the past PLEASE.

I'm not a fire Painter guy or a total pro "zone" or hater, but I do think that Painter needs to use the full deck. Coach K used zone for a stretch to beat Louisville and he said it helped prevent dribble penetration and keep his bigs out of foul trouble, which is precisely what we need for a few minutes each game.

I'm not saying to play it all the time or that it is the end-all-be-all, but to NEVER play it is ridiculous. It's as if he doesn't know how to coach it, so he won't. Or he is too prideful or stubborn. And some on here think that we are "above" or "too good" to play zone like it's a sign of weakness or something. If Coach K (a Knight man-to-man disciple) can do it from time-to-time, we aren't "above" it.

OK. I'm going to step off my soapbox now. Whew. Now I feel better. :)

Much like the Cubs, you have to bring in a manager/coach that knows how to win and brings that energy.

We sucked... GK was given way to long also. Unfortunately I think we are repeating history with CMP. That's kind of my point. Rather than look for a good coach, Purdue thinks they need to hire a Purdue guy, when history shows, CMP is a disciple of GK, who never had success either. The last time Purdue had success, they went out and got Lee Rose, who really had no prior association with Purdue. Many will say he didn't do it with his own players, but he did it. Which is all we really want.

We are a top twenty team. Not even close to the depths we were at when CMP took over.

If we did play some zone from time to time, I think it would also give our guys a chance to catch their breath sometimes. I mean when Mathias is running all over the court chasing a team's best player, it is no wonder he is not as effective on the offensive end sometimes! A small amount of zone defense might help this problem at least a little. Also, some teams struggle against the zone more than others, it would be nice to have this in our back pocket when needed.

Call me when we get past a S16. And believe me, when CMP gets to be 65 and recruits stop coming to Purdue, GKs last 5 years will look good.

So you admit you are wrong about the program Painter took over I take it.

I never said the Program was great when CMP took over. I said Purdue was a better job, which I still think it is. We just didn't look for a coach. I will tell you that the program isn't any better under CMP than it was under GK and I don't want to wait another 27 years to find out we won't make a FF. Wisky has hit a homerun twice with hires in the same timeframe.
