Who did we lose out on?

Mike Warren and Wooden ? Wow, I never knew. that would have been huge. I doubt Purdue would have attracted Alcindor. But Wooden would have attracted the local talent. maybe Oscar Robertson.

Yeah, I doubt he would have attracted the same talent he got at UCLA and the California coast, but he would have gotten some. The Big O would have been awesome. "The Wizard of West Lafayette" sounds pretty good to me :)

Thank you for deciphering my earlier post. I couldn't decide whether people did not like my sense of humor or if they never heard of Wooden - lol.

he didn't want to go to a big campus (and the sister thing) ... I don't think he was a loss since he never was interested????

My brother plays bball with his dad (his dad is a Purdue grad).

If I remember correctly, originally he wanted to come to Purdue, but before he went crazy as a senior (and shot up 6 inches) he was only considered a 2 star recruit and we were loaded (Robbie and company).

Your mentions of Wooden got me to thinking about what a phenomenal run he had... it's hard to fathom his last 14 years from 1961-62 to his retirement after 1974-75.
Most fans know of the 88 game win streak which is striking.
But I really think more amazing was the overall success that those 14 seasons produced - 13 NCAA appearances (fewer teams qualified for the tourney then), 12 Final Fours, and 10 Championships.
Unbelievably good.

Yes, I appreciated Ray Eddy. Especially the fact that he wanted student athletes, but possibly Wooden would have been a little better. He is #1 on my list of those that got away.

Can you imagine a starting 5 that might have included Lamar Lundy (All Big Ten 57') and Big "O"-although Lundy was a couple years older, I think?

I'm just curious.

a lot of posters have admitted to being coaches, players, and Purdue basketball historians. I never really followed recruiting very closely until the last couple of years.

I know Macy transferred to UK. and Scott, Martin, Stephens, and Palambizio all transferred. and some tall guy left for DePaul as a grad transfer. .

And we recently lost out on Langford, JJJ, Bluett, Epperson, and Ward

And we lost out on Dawson, Harris and Zach Randolph.

Besides the last two years, who were some of the big/elite targets/offers Purdue coaches lost out on that they really tried to recruit to come to Purdue?

I heard a rumor Purdue tried to recruit Scotty May.

who were the big ones we lost out on and that got away?

Derrick Zimmerman-Miss St
Caron Butler- UConn
Zellar

I recall reading that Griffiths' high school coach in Chicago controlled the decision to instead accept Stu Jackson's six figure offer.
Oh what could have been...

Oh he was interested. He grew up in a Purdue household, room was decorated with Purdue stuff. Not going to get into it again on here, but the campus visit wasn’t great...

Had Dominic James been mentioned? There was a point guard who eventually ended up at Mizzu. I can’t think of his name.

Great coach. But his recruiting in today’s era would’ve been problematic. He delegated the shady stuff but still.

On the flip side way back when...Mount was a Miami, Fla commit we flipped so it works both ways over time along with our current Center and past power forward.

I didn’t think we offered Skiles?
Clarence Glover, the asst. coach at the time, withdrew the scholarship offer without telling Keady. Skiles was going to Purdue until then. Skiles had been sick when attending a Purdue camp and didn't play well so Glover backed off. Keady tried to get involved again, but Skiles wasn't having it.

Eric Montross was down to PU or UNC.

I know going way back to 60's- Mike Warren out of SB Central visited on a recruiting trip here. According to my older sister, he attended a PU vs ND football game but I doubt John Wooden was ever in jeopardy of losing out on Warren since Wooden had coached early in his career at SB Central
Not true re: Montross. He was down to UNC, Duke and IU.

Wow, Rick Mount was headed to Miami? That was a steal for Purdue, much like Joe Barry Carrol.

I seem to remember Purdue being involved in recruiting Eric Montross early in his recruitment process. Much like a lot of players, we identify and offer early, and then somebody else takes them away.
