Mike Warren and Wooden ? Wow, I never knew. that would have been huge. I doubt Purdue would have attracted Alcindor. But Wooden would have attracted the local talent. maybe Oscar Robertson.
he didn't want to go to a big campus (and the sister thing) ... I don't think he was a loss since he never was interested????
Your mentions of Wooden got me to thinking about what a phenomenal run he had... it's hard to fathom his last 14 years from 1961-62 to his retirement after 1974-75.Thank you for deciphering my earlier post. I couldn't decide whether people did not like my sense of humor or if they never heard of Wooden - lol.

Most fans know of the 88 game win streak which is striking.
But I really think more amazing was the overall success that those 14 seasons produced - 13 NCAA appearances (fewer teams qualified for the tourney then), 12 Final Fours, and 10 Championships.
Unbelievably good.
Can you imagine a starting 5 that might have included Lamar Lundy (All Big Ten 57') and Big "O"-although Lundy was a couple years older, I think?Yeah, I doubt he would have attracted the same talent he got at UCLA and the California coast, but he would have gotten some. The Big O would have been awesome. "The Wizard of West Lafayette" sounds pretty good to me![]()
Amen, brother. AMEN.Yes, I appreciated Ray Eddy. Especially the fact that he wanted student athletes, but possibly Wooden would have been a little better. He is #1 on my list of those that got away.
I'm just curious.
a lot of posters have admitted to being coaches, players, and Purdue basketball historians. I never really followed recruiting very closely until the last couple of years.
I know Macy transferred to UK. and Scott, Martin, Stephens, and Palambizio all transferred. and some tall guy left for DePaul as a grad transfer. .
And we recently lost out on Langford, JJJ, Bluett, Epperson, and Ward
And we lost out on Dawson, Harris and Zach Randolph.
Besides the last two years, who were some of the big/elite targets/offers Purdue coaches lost out on that they really tried to recruit to come to Purdue?
I heard a rumor Purdue tried to recruit Scotty May.
who were the big ones we lost out on and that got away?
Oh he was interested. He grew up in a Purdue household, room was decorated with Purdue stuff. Not going to get into it again on here, but the campus visit wasn’t great...he didn't want to go to a big campus (and the sister thing) ... I don't think he was a loss since he never was interested????
Bruce Brown down at MiamiOh he was interested. He grew up in a Purdue household, room was decorated with Purdue stuff. Not going to get into it again on here, but the campus visit wasn’t great...
IIRC Skiles had some off court problems. But he totally wanted and would have come here .... so ... we lost him ...
Great coach. But his recruiting in today’s era would’ve been problematic. He delegated the shady stuff but still.Your mentions of Wooden got me to thinking about what a phenomenal run he had... it's hard to fathom his last 14 years from 1961-62 to his retirement after 1974-75.

Clarence Glover, the asst. coach at the time, withdrew the scholarship offer without telling Keady. Skiles was going to Purdue until then. Skiles had been sick when attending a Purdue camp and didn't play well so Glover backed off. Keady tried to get involved again, but Skiles wasn't having it.I didn’t think we offered Skiles?
Griffith got paid off to go to Wisconsin - or at least his mother did.I saw him and Big Dog at the bars that week and thought it was for sure we’d get him.
Not true re: Montross. He was down to UNC, Duke and IU.Eric Montross was down to PU or UNC.
I know going way back to 60's- Mike Warren out of SB Central visited on a recruiting trip here. According to my older sister, he attended a PU vs ND football game but I doubt John Wooden was ever in jeopardy of losing out on Warren since Wooden had coached early in his career at SB Central
Pretty sure that it was Miami of Ohio that Rick consideredOn the flip side way back when...Mount was a Miami, Fla commit we flipped so it works both ways over time along with our current Center and past power forward.
No, it was Miami FL. And he committed, but Bob King stayed in touch, and eventually Rocket decided to stay home.Pretty sure that it was Miami of Ohio that Rick considered
Could very well be that I am intertwining it with the butt kicking of Miami (Ohio) in the '69 NCAAsNo, it was Miami FL. And he committed, but Bob King stayed in touch, and eventually Rocket decided to stay home.

As opposed to Dave Schellhase '66... lolI thought it was Miami (OH) as well. For Miami (FL), he would have followed a not-too-bad of a player named Rick Barry, Class of '65.
As opposed to Dave Schellhase '66... lol
In the early 80's we were runner up for Waymon Tisdale. His brother was a student at the time.Oh no doubt there, 70. I wish I could have been able to see Schellhase play, among many of the Purdue greats/legends.
