I'm just curious.

a lot of posters have admitted to being coaches, players, and Purdue basketball historians. I never really followed recruiting very closely until the last couple of years.

I know Macy transferred to UK. and Scott, Martin, Stephens, and Palambizio all transferred. and some tall guy left for DePaul as a grad transfer. .

And we recently lost out on Langford, JJJ, Bluett, Epperson, and Ward

And we lost out on Dawson, Harris and Zach Randolph.

Besides the last two years, who were some of the big/elite targets/offers Purdue coaches lost out on that they really tried to recruit to come to Purdue?

I heard a rumor Purdue tried to recruit Scotty May.

who were the big ones we lost out on and that got away?

Alan Henderson. He was rumored to favor Purdue, but he didn't want to play center while Big Dog played forward. RMK told him that he would have to play center at Purdue, but he could play forward at IU. At IU he was listed at forward on the roster, but played center.

I guess you could say the Zellers and Plumlees.

and Marcus Landry who went to UW.

Idk why I can't think of his name. But a big center was all but committed until UK hired his coach I believe.

Butler who went to Uconn was another.

One of the biggest who doesn't get talked about enough is Randle who went to Stanford. CMP put the full court pressure on his recruitment. Even going over seas to watch him play. Also missing out on him was in direct correlation with the downward spiral of the team for that couple of years.

Jamaal Magloire was between Purdue and Kentucky, ended up picking Kentucky cause Pitino said he'd get 20-30 minutes a game as a Frosh and Jamaal was worried he wouldn't get that here; Jason Gardner was between us, Arizona, Duke, and Kansas. His mom loved Purdue but he ended up at Arizona; and Caron Butler, at one point he was believed to have been a heavy Purdue lean and was close/had verbally committed, then everything changed and he said style of play of UConn pushed them over the top.

Was’t Robert Vaden ready to be a Boiler until the last second? Maybe not elite, but would have been a nice compliment to the Boilers those years.

Jerome Harmon out of Gary who went to Louisville. He was s high flyer.

I don’t think we recruited him but Mark Jewell was Mr. basketball out of Lafayette Jeff who went to Iowa in late 80s (his Mom cut my hair when I went to Purdue. I should have asked what happened or I forgot).

Robert Vaden was elite. And yes he was committed for at least two years. Then Desmond Gatis was kicked out of cathedral. Robert left too. Gatis was basically done with Bball bc he couldn’t stay on the court. Purdue still recruited Vaden hard. But Mike Davis joined his church and basically became Roberts Dad.

Skiles went to some dink high school. Not sure he had any big offers when Heathcote found him.
He went to Plymouth ... was known in Indiana, made the All-Star team and played against KY ... it was well-known that he wanted to go to Purdue.

Plymouth was the smallest school since Milan to win the no-class Indiana State Championship --- not such a dink HS .... Please.

The 1982 championship game between Roosevelt High of Gary and Plymouth remains legendary in Indiana. The Pilgrims trailed by two points with a few seconds to go, but Skiles sank a long jumper to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

Plymouth won 75-74 in double overtime, and Skiles finished with 39 points.

Plymouth became the smallest school to win Indiana's championship since Milan.

I still think we should have signed our former guard to coach. My father enjoyed watching him play. The last I heard he took a job out west and coached some good rich kid to play with a hazard. He later went to the lew and found some kid to fit the bill. You can bet your bibby.

I remember Purdue recruiting Rashard Griffith very hard along with the Big Dog. I believe it was down to Purdue and Wisconsin. He chose Wisconsin. Rashard Griffin has to regret his decision; Wisconsin sucked at the time. I know I would have. But you never know.

I worked around Edisons (Plymouth coach) brother-ibn-law when Plymouth won...lot of excitement in that game...and WHAT a game from Skiles

I heard that he was quoted saying if PU would've matched Wisc. offer he would have came here.

I was a student at Purdue during this time. One of my best friends at Purdue was one of Glenn's academic tutors. I don't know about the matching part. I never heard that. I do know Griffith asked Glenn what kind of deal did he have at Purdue. Griffith was on campus for the first practice at Mackey for the start of the new season that year. I cannot remember what Purdue called that back then. It was similar to IU's Hoosier Hysteria. Griffith was definitely looking for a deal back then.

Had we got Griffith....
Rumor has it there was some dirty pool going on in his recruitment by the Wis head coach.

I talked with Matt Waddell at Harry's one night and he said keady was never as mad about a recruitment as he was with Griffith. He said stu Jackson was the filthiest person he ever met. Supposedly, Griffith was at the end of the year banquet his sophomore year when he went pro, and he walked up when it it was his time to speak, and he actually said "I should have gone to Purdue."

I remember Butler. He verbaled and then went to that Maine prep school. And while he was there, UCONN stole him from us.

I also remember Griffith. I thought he could have been a monster. then I thought he left college too early, and was drafted low because he didn't impress in work-outs, and he ended up playing in Turkey, Israel or some other Euro town. he came back to try the NBA again, but after a preseason, he went back to playing euro ball. I don't feel sorry for him. he was making over $1 million a year. I guess you could say, he was always about the money, and he got it.

Scott Skiles? he could have been interesting, and he was "gritty" Who did we have starting at guard that we passed on Skiles? Scotty would have been great with the right complement of players - sort of like Quinn Buckner.

Porter Roberts - Linc Darner - Todd foster

I think it was Ricky Hall/Steve Reid early in his career at MSU and Lewis/Stephens later.

This isn't mentioned enough IMO.

The worst part about it is that Randle went to Stanford, played well but was all but forgotten about because the rest of the team was not very good. I don't think they made the tourney until his Sr. year and even then I think it was a first round exit. He was the peice that was missing here for a few years. A rare example IMO where a kid made the wrong choice and both he and the school he spurned suffered for it.

John Wooden, as a coach. He had too much integrity and said he had to honor his 3-year commitment to UCLA. The rest is history... oh what might have been.

I saw him and Big Dog at the bars that week and thought it was for sure we’d get him.

Just from Indiana recruits in the past decade a few CMP misses that hurt Purdue by year...
2008 Zeller & Hayward (oh what could have been)
2011 Dawson
2012 Harris & Robinson (Huge legacy misses)
2016 Guy
2017 JJ
2018 Romeo Langford
2019 ???? (will the trend continue with Brooks & TJD)

I am sure there are others like we could throw in Blueitt (2014) to the list, but CMP could never really gain traction there, and like the five 5 star or high 4 star guys in 2017, Purdue could have used them badly....but CMP garnered marginal to little interest from them.

Of this list:
2008 hurt the worst as it cost us deep tourney runs and then hurt future recruiting as Purdue would have been on a big time roll....
2012 hurt as we needed them badly & we sucked without them.
2017 What could this team be with the length of JJ?

Malik Williams and Epperson in 2017.
