I've watched a couple of the games. The opposing team today was so bad. Our walk- ons plus Berg would have beat them.

TKR looked like he was playing nerf basketball against his kid brother. He or Furst could have scored 30.

Waddell doesn't look bad, but Colvin looks really good. 8 for 12 from 3 on the trip and a couple highlight real dunks. Second leading scorer on the trip by a fairly wide margin. I'm starting to see a real possibility that Colvin could be getting big minutes (25+) at the 2 and/or 3. I think Loyer still has an inside track for minutes at the two but right now Colvin may be playing better than anyone at the 2 or 3.
You make no mention of defense, which is half the game. not saying he isnt', but it's certainly a factor for Matt.

Waddell had a great game in game 1, no doubt, but the last 2 games he kind of came back down to earth. He averaged 6 points the last two games shot 5 for 12 and 1 of 5 from 3 against pretty bad competition. He has a chance to play this year but he'll be competing against Morton and Heide for minutes, not Colvin.
The game is not just offense..
He defends, he's in the right place, he runs the court, etc etc
THOSE things all make a good player.

I really like the shooting of Heide but he's not effective at the 3 because he plays more like a forward than a guard and that 3 spot is a guard in painter's system....him at the 4 would allow him to be quicker than most 4s, he can rebound well, and he's strong enough not to get pushed around....I really think he'll flourish there....Waddell moves like a guard, he's got great length and anticipation, and if you watch he's usually the first one out on the break....now he's not strong enough at the 4 and his rebounding is iffy but he is definitely a great perimeter player....he seems to be shooting better this year...if that continues he needs big minutes at the 3, maybe the 2....Colvin is a great shooter, he's still a little unsure out there....if he gets his defense going, understands the offense, and can let the game come to him he maybe our best 3...but for now he needs to backup Waddell....
Because that's ALL he's had. His 5 best players have always included 3 guards.....
This, just like he doesn't want to run, gotta be the most misinterpreted things about coach Painter.
Not that there wont' be times when he wants and extra ball handler out there.
I guess we'll find out this year for sure. (it appears)

So you think Heide is stronger than Waddell? I"d take that bet. Waddell is 'quietly' JACKED. ;)
Heide would get killed inside by any decent sized 4. Waddell would too, but he plays sound defense so he'd defend it better I think. Both would pull the opposing 4 out with them....hmmm
Colvin has shown flashes of being a good defender. Has all the assets AND Long as F for th position. When he sits down low and reaches out the other guy looks SMALL...
The fact that he can get his shot off against any other 2 in the post or mid range AND shoot it (maybe) as well from 3 as Fletch makes it a real dilemma at some point down the road. In the best way.

There's a lot of hyperbole there. Makes zero sense to me that Purdue was ranked in the top five nationally on offense for much of the season if they were 'playing 4 on 5'. Just doesn't track.

Now if you don't think that Purdue will get much production from Loyer or at the four spot and that Braden is at risk of going 2 for 10 with seven turnovers, I agree that Ethan isn't the guy that will provide the offense to cover that up. The 'glue' piece of the equation only works if Zach is getting help from other positions.
So do you believe Morton needs to play 20-25 mins this year and that there isn’t a better player than him to take his place?

I’m not anti Morton like some but I am a realist and see a great deal of potential in all of the other options at the 3. I believe that they have similar or higher floors than he does and what appears to possibly be significantly higher ceilings on the offensive end. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve any minutes but no where near the 20 minute mark at the expense of the other options in minutes played. If he develops a hot hand in a game increase his time for that game along with the same applying to the others. I think Morton can pick up some minutes running the point to rest Smith along with Jones … Colvin looks to be able to share time at both the 2 & 3 … Jones at multiple positions 1,2,3… and all this frees up more time for Heide, Waddell, & Colvin all ahead of Morton at the 3, unless he comes out with some big breakout improvement in performance and scoring consistency. Manipulate the lineup to have the most athleticism and scoring ability on the court throughout the game and keep guys fresh. I also don’t think it’s necessary to substitute basically new lineups in all at once. Don’t we all play for the same team and shouldn’t we be able to plug and play as needed.

Totally fair question. I think that last year proved that Purdue’s offense can function at an elite level with Morton in the lineup when Smith and Loyer are playing well to complement Zach. I completely agree that Ethan is not a 'go get a bucket guy'.

I have no idea whether there will be a better option than Ethan and if we're all being honest, none of us know at this point. I certainly hope that those other guys are amazing but if Ethan is shooting at 35%+ from three it is, IMO, a big ask for those buys to be good enough to relegate him to 'garbage minutes'.

I suspect that Ethan only plays 20 to 25 mpg if he's shooting in the high 30's to low 40's from three and even then I agree that it's vital that at least two of the other guys between Heide, Waddell and Colvin get enough run so that they can provide another alpha scoring option come March. More likely he shoots in the mid 30's and plays 15 to 20 mpg or the low 30's or worse and plays less than 15 mpg.

Agree with most of that although IMO it's pretty clear that Waddell, Colvin and Heide don't have 'similar floors' to Morton, primarily because none of the three have any real playing experience and much less experience in the program. When Purdue's offense and defense are humming it's because everyone is doing their job, so having a new guy out there who doesn't know what he's doing lowers the floor significantly. Now the upside payout may be worth that lower floor but it doesn't make sense to me to not recognize that there's a tradeoff there.

I don’t totally disagree, but this is Waddell’s third year in the program and, though he hasn’t played much, my sense in watching him is that he knows what is going on. I think that he may bring a lot of the same intangibles that Morton brings.

It should be an interesting competition and I really have no idea who will be the starting 3, especially late in the season. I really loved what I saw in limited minutes from Waddell, Heide, and Colvin, but it wasn’t like they were playing in the Big Ten or anything.

Well by going through the scrimmage stats heide had 11 rebounds while guarding Waddell, usually that takes more strength to do that....Waddell did out score heide though and beat him down the court a few times...heide had trouble getting off a shot with Waddell on him....heide is also a very quick and explosive leaper, perfect for the 4 position....he doesn't move laterally very well and that's difficult to play as a perimeter player....he really reminds me of Wheeler, but hopefully with a more consistent shot...

I believe Jujuan Johnson led the league in rebounding, and he wasn't stronger than ANYONE. ;)
