I realize this a team effort , so I'm not trying to diminish that. However the starting 5 is a great honor to have your name called ... Given that Smith Loyer and TKR are given and either DJ or Cluff at the 5. Who gets that 3 spot with so many that can fill that role....4 key things come to mind 1) who plays the best D 2) who can spread the floor and pass 3) hits 3's. 4) good off the dribble to the basket ?

Cox Harris Mayer West Benter will be fighting for that spot. They will allow contribute this year for sure what a great group . I left Murphy as rotation at the 4.

Will this be a game to game situation based on matchup. ?

I'd guess we start the season Smith, Loyer, Cox, TKR and either DJ or Cluff.

How we end the season might be slightly different.

I'd guess minute to minute based on matchup.

Painter said that he sees Loyer at the 3 spot. He says he doesn’t think Cox is a 3 but more so a 2 or backing up Braden. Harris, Benter, Mayer and possibly West all vying for time at the 3. I think Benter can play 1-4, and Painter sail he will get some chance to play the 4. I believe Harris, and Meyer fit 1-3… West has a smooth shot and can play off the dribble so if he doesn’t redshirt he will likely be a 2-3. I will enjoy looking back at this to see if I am anywhere close? 😀

I’d love to see a real small forward play the three. But I realize that will never happen with painter as the coach. He loves his 3 guard offense

I'd guess minute to minute based on matchup.

Painter is a Doobie Brothers fan.....

As someone else said, it's not about who starts, it's more about who finishes. I think Cox will start, with DJ at the 5. I think CMP values the defensive pressure CJ gives against the opposing PG to open games, and he clearly sees the value of DJ as the rim protector because it's the biggest thing we were missing last year. As with the other threads we have on this subject, how the minutes are distributed are to be determined, and maybe Matt doesn't really know at this point.

I think Matt starts off with a plan, but as we've seen, he'll change that plan during the season if it isn't working. Multiple times.

It depends on matchups and who is practicing well. Matt had lots of pieces and although the big 3 will start every game barring injuries the other two will be rotations at starter. I'd guess CJ, Mayer, Cluff, Jacobson and Harris log 90% of those starts at the end of the day with Benter, Murphy, West and Burgess coming off the bench for spot minutes.

That's 12 deep to play with who may all be good enough to start on most big 10 teams. Matt won't be short for options, it's gonna be fun to watch.
