When will something be done to fix the portal?

Marshall is opting out of their bowl game. I heard this week that every QB on their roster went into the portal. I jumped on Army -10.5.

It’s broken? I’d say to the people who run stuff it’s working quite well. Their goals are consolidation and conversion to pro sports for the networks. For the Ohio states of the world, what they’ve always done is now legal and they can buy a team. It’s only broken if you’re Marshall or Purdue

That’s why I said when they allowed unlimited transfers in addition to the court decisions that made NIL possible, people should have lost it then.

Expansion of big conferences has achieved a lot of these goals also. Purdue fans talked about it like adding three powers from the west was neat. lol. Stupid

People always love the portal when they add somebody. Purdue basketball fans loved the addition of lance jones.

Fans always hate when players leave.

Eventually minor leagues will be formed as more and more athletes will just want to play sports rather than attend classes. And soon there after colleges will just schedule traveling athletic teams as if they are performing artists.

Look at this board. Fans don’t really want to see student athletes perform. What they want to see is a football team wearing our colors play and winning on Saturday. You could care less about their majors or their gpa as long as they can score and we win the game. They are no longer students in your mind. They are athletes. Are they worth $5 million each. So you can be entertained? I’ve already found cheaper entertainment to occupy my Saturdays. I’m still a fan, but I don’t feel a student needs to be paid money to play for their school.

You might say I wear my Purdue shirt because I’m proud I graduated from Purdue. Rather than to say I’m some Purdue football groupie that needs to yell , scream and get drunk on Saturdays. Concerts are a lot cheaper and more entertaining. Wierd Al, and trans Siberian orchestra are traveling. Ticket prices are $50 - 250.

Ask yourself what football game you’re looking forward to seeing next year. To me the SIU game is the same price and we might win. To me, winning is what matters and makes people happy. Nobody here was happy when we almost won those 3 games. You were just as unhappy after the overtime losses as you were after being blown out.

Just read your comments . After every loss you told me to stfu. It didn’t matter what the score was.

You’re trying to tell me that whole orchestra is Trans?

This is the new normal. Just like regular students, student athletes can leave whenever they want to.

The coach left, why aren't we mad about that?

If coaches are free to abandon a school pre bowl, then so are players.

It's capitalism after all. You take your talents to whomever gives you the most.

The coach didn’t leave. He didn’t have his contract renewed after winning the conference so the players got pissed and left.

I said 2 years ago it's gong to be free agency with no contract by out and no salary cap.

In pro sports, the free agency period starts AFTER the playoffs. Not before.

Penn State just lost their backup quarterback to the portal a week before their playoff game. Franklin’s a tool, so I’m not losing sleep over it, but it’s a bad system.

Biggest issue with NCAA is that they don’t see these issues coming. Ever.

Then they take 10+ years to clean it up

At this point theres no going back. To your point, this could have been a good thing and for the vast majority of athletes it is. The pendulum has swung too far and there needs to be better balance. The portal is something that can be managed better. NIL has become ridiculous but i dont see it changing without some sort of collective bargaining agreement which will add so much cost for every university to manage.

It can’t have NO guardrails. Needs to be regulated. I don’t think you should be able to limit an athletes income personally but the large payolas not attached to an entity or for actual use of NIL should not be allowed.

Absolutely. Seems like they could implement some type of clearing house for this.

But how do you prevent an individual paying a certain player to go to a certain school? Especially if the school isn't involved in any of that deal between a player and booster.

They’re employees, make every ncaa school use a standard contract where nil is part of what’s licensed to the school. It also can specify opt out penalties. It really doesn’t seem to be that hard.

When Rev sharing starts in 2025-26, schools will be making direct payments to players.

U cant and i know a few families of very good hs players and im sure many on here do as well. The money being thrown around is insane. You could argue fair market value but theres no way people putting up this money are getting it back through the nil of a good hs player who may or may not pan out and is only a house hold name to his friends. I dont see a way to fix it when the person investing the money doesnt care if he gets it back.

The playoffs in the NFL mean more than your average bowl game.

Indinia - 7 (6 midseason)
Ohio St - 5
Oregon - 4
Penn St - 4 (1 midseason)
Arizona St - 10
Boise St - 7
Georgia - 7
Tennessee - 6 (including a Nimrod)
Texas - 8
Notre Dame - 3 (all midseason)

Meh, doesn't seem like a large volume to me.

Until we have a 3rd string QB make a CFP game unwatchable.
Agree. It’s pre NIL recruiting windows in a post NIL world. Needs changed. Signing day is day after NC game and late signing is April after spring games.

Don’t open portal until jan 1

I would push it back to mid January.

I find that unlikely. There's plenty of value in playing in a CFP for players who want to go pro unlike a garden variety bowl game.
We’re at 67 and counting. And 1 Drew Allar injury away from my scenario occurring.
